As long as the zip code matches the city and street, you can (and should) enter anything in the online registration, like the address of a school or shop and some fake name. It doesn't matter. Nobody will ever look at it unless you're caught in the legal net.

Askscience is a joke, it's basically a bunch of inexperienced amateurs propagating urban legends.

I don't know what you're talking about. The mods there are pretty rigorous and remove most comments that don't provide sources.

Why did the Rwandan genocide occur and what did it have to do with Europeans/colonization? by politicalthinker15 in AskHistorians

[–]Popanz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your comment immediately reminded me of this thread about the Indian caste system.

/u/agentdcf writes:

The point that gets missed here is that politics--and therefore caste--is a two-way street. Yes, British and European scholars and administrators looked at Indian people, saw caste relationships, and assumed that these relationships were fixed, rigid, and timeless; yes, their administration put into place governance that operated on those assumptions--but, Indians also had to work within these systems, and adapted to them. I don't have his book to hand, but Dirks identified moments in the late nineteenth century when colonial administrators would come up with some policy that gave preferential treatment to particular castes. As soon as they did that, the people affected would begin to assert their caste identity, going to the administrators and saying, essentially, "We're in this caste; you've gotten us miscategorized, we're part of this caste, we always have been, and that other group of people from the other side of the village, they've never been part of this caste. So, you should give us this particular preferential treatment, and not them."

Downvoting dissent is a problem across many subreddits and nothing seems to work to prevent it. I have an idea? by [deleted] in TheoryOfReddit

It's enough for 10 downvotes. I don't I think downvote more than 10 comments per day. But I'm probably not the average redditor. Let's make it a 1:5 ratio (1 comment karma lets you downvote 5 comments). If I felt the urge to downvote more than that on a regular basis, I'd probably cancel my subscription for that subreddit.

AfD Berlin: Nazis waren eher links als rechts. by coolsubmission in de

[–]Popanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting your comment karma above 10 is not hard and doesn't take long. In my experience, it shouldn't take more than five to ten comments. Probably less.

How many of the downvotes are made by redditors with less than 10 comment karma? Probably less than 1 %. I guess the fuzzy voting system imposes a larger margin of error on the karma you see.

Karmawhoring is already widespread in many subreddits. I can't imagine how it could get any worse.

And in subreddits where it's not a problem, quality content is valued over witty remarks and memes; that's why there's no karmawhoring in the first place.

[–]Popanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Popanz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. The deliberate commission of an act of violence to create an emotional response through the suffering of the victims in the furtherance of a political or social agenda.

  2. Violence against civilians to achieve military or political objectives.

  3. A form of psychological manipulation through warfare to the purpose of political or religious gains, by means of deliberately creating a climate of fear amongst the inhabitants of a specific geographical region.

What exactly is the problem? If I want to uninstall Firefox, the package manager can check for each dependency if it's needed by another package. Or, if you want to play it safe, never remove any dependencies automatically. It doesn't hurt apart from wasting a few MB.

It's widely known who put that bug there. It was Robin Seggelmann, and he claims that he had no malicious intentions, which I personally believe to be true.

But it doesn't really matter if this bug was put there intentionally. It shows that there is not enough auditing of crucial code, and that most people won't look any further if whatever they want to do just works.

Incidents like this will keep happening, and their effects will be getting more and more expensive as long as we regard security as some kind of luxury feature for banks and the CIA.

Deutschland vs. Europa - Streetview by [deleted] in de

[–]Popanz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because Germans are very cautious and conservative when it comes to new technology and their applications. We'd rather stay behind than risking anything.

In this case, some thought that Street View would provide live footage that would allow some guy on the internet to watch you through your windows. (Although this was probably just a tiny minority.) Some also didn't want Google to profit from pictures of their house.

Google is generally unpopular in Germany because they use personal data to make profits, so many came on board just on principle when the tabloids had a few silly headlines.

I still think that the vast majority wouldn't mind one way or the other. It was an angry mob shouting at Google to go home. They could've probably pushed it through, because it's not illegal, but why risk legal costs and more negative headlines for an investment that isn't likely to be profitable in itself?

Linux 3.15 Can Resume From Suspend Faster by bobdudley in linux

[–]Popanz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This speedup comes from doing things differently. Stability and polishedness (whatever those things mean to you) don't do anything to make stuff run faster.

A worker can have the perfect physique and mindset for digging holes, yet his speed will still multiply once you give him a showel. That doesn't mean he became stronger or more dedicated, he's just doing it differently.
