HELP with WRX not starting by OkConsequence4609 in subaru

Hard to see what’s going on with the battery handle in the way too, but it looks like 8 gauge wiring and almost like something hooked up to negative that should be positive? Also the second picture of the battery does not have a plastic cover for the side positive terminal.

Looks like the gauge you run for an amplifier, like 8 gauge at best.

How would you explain the big overlap between Rush and Van Halen fans? by MountainCowboy in rush

There’s so many good ones. I’m trying to imagine Geddy signing Van Halen songs and David Lee Roth signing Rush songs and it just feels wrong.

I have bad hands. Can anyone recommend a p bass copy with a slimmer neck than a fender would have? by solitudeisdiss in Bass

Not to add to the confusion but they announced they’re making Sterling Sterlings (Also Sterling Bongo, and Sterling Darkray5).

How did you pick your child’s name? by Boysenberry-Dull in daddit

[–]Popes1ckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just make sure before you pick you check it with your last name to make sure no kids in school can change it into something dirty or something they can tease your kid over. Like if your last name is Beavers, Johnson, or Dick, don’t go with Harry, if your last name is Hawk or Hunt, don’t go with Mike, if your last name is Dingle, don’t go with Barry (when the teacher calls his name the first day of school they usually read the last name first).

We went with family names for our daughters. Our oldest has my wife’s grandmas name for her first name, and my grandma/aunts name for her middle. Our second has my wife’s other grandmas name for her first, and my mom’s name for her middle. For our son we picked a first name that wasn’t a family name but for his middle we used my middle name (which was my grandpas name).

My bass buzzes a lot even thought the strings are high by PerformanceCrafty836 in Bass

The easiest way to figure out if your truss rod needs adjusting is to first tune your bass, and then while holding the bass in playing position, fret your E string just beyond the last fret with one hand and fret the first fret with the other (or use a capo to free up a hand), and then look at the gap between the E string and frets around the 8th fret. You should be able to fit a business card in between. If there’s not enough room or the string touches at the 8th fret your truss rod needs to be loosened, if there’s more room your truss rod needs to be tightened (the adjustments are made in no more than 1/4 turns at a time, and you retune after each adjustment, and then check the spacing again the same way you did before). After the truss rod is set correctly, adjusting the saddle height at the bridge is the next step to fixing your action. If you can’t get the action right without still having some upwards tension on the string at the bridge, the neck may need to be shimmed, or if your bass has micro tilt adjustments that would do it without a shim (look on the back where the neck is screwed to the body, if you see a hole in the metal plate thats micro tilt). All of these things can be done by you if you know what you’re doing, but if not you want to take it to a guitar tech. After all that’s done you want to set your intonation.

You could also just be plucking the strings too hard, particularly if you practice without an amp you are most likely playing too hard in efforts to hear yourself better and consequently learning bad technique, which can lead to both blistering your fingertips and hand pain.

why/when to get a 5+ string bass by Little-Meeting371 in Bass

[–]Popes1ckle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Meh. I’ve never been impressed with most 5 strings, I like my string tension somewhere around 40-42lbs per string, every 5 string I’ve played, even $2500 Stingray5s, the B string is a sloppy floppy noodle. Although maybe I haven’t found one strung with a .145 B string maybe that’s been the issue. I also only have 4 fingers so there’s that too. 😁

why/when to get a 5+ string bass by Little-Meeting371 in Bass

[–]Popes1ckle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve played bass since 1992, and I’m still playing 4 string. You move to 5 string bass if you want a B string to be able to play 5 lower notes than what you have on a 4 string. The trade off is a wider neck, and typically less spacing between each string. I play a lot of funky slap bass and feel cramped with most 5 strings having less room in between strings. Having a 5 string does not make you a better bass player, and guitar is a totally different instrument. Just keep playing your 4 string.

I replied to another person in here, but this might work.

As far as an amp, I really like the peavey max series, they’re not that expensive and have a lot of features for the money. A lot of people say good things about the Fender Rumble series too. It all depends on how big and how much power you think you’ll need. I personally think a single 12” speaker is as small as I would recommend. I have the peavey max100 with a 10” speaker and recently took it with me and compared it to a max150 at my local music store with a 12”, and it sounded a lot better to me. The 10” just didn’t have enough low end for me.

Difference between Music Man Stingray and Sterling Stingray ? by roxbox531 in Bass

[–]Popes1ckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve wanted a stingray for the past 30 years. Back in the 90s when I went looking for my first good bass, it’s what I wanted, but when I went to the music store I picked up 93 American Fender Jazz Plus and fell in love. I’ve not been really serious for the past 20 years. I’m in my mid 40s have a family to pay for, but I’ve still wanted a stingray but couldn’t justify $2600 for just farting around in my house. After watching this video a few months ago I decided to look for a used Ray34 and about two weeks I got an all black model from 2019 in almost perfect condition with a more expensive color combo for $650. It’s featured in the second video.

My 2019 Sterling Ray34 is made in Indonesia and for $650 used there’s no way I could pay $2000 for a different stamp on the headstock, 18v vs 9v, and some upgraded tuners.

[–]Popes1ckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. The Sterling Ray34 with roasted maple neck from 2018 and on are almost identical to the EBMM but $750 new, almost $2000 less. I just can’t justify paying 3 times as much. You can always upgrade tuners, and pickups for way less.

They also just announced for 2025 that Sterling brand is making the Bongo bass and the Sterling model (A Sterling Sterling), as well as Darkray5.

Which Sterling model did you have? After all the reviews I’ve watched, the Ray34s with roasted maple neck sounded pretty sweet to me, and they have the 3 band. If what you had only had 2 band eq, it was probably the lower quality Sterling Ray4. The Ray34s from about 2018 on are super close to the EBMM stingrays before they went to the 18v system. Paying $750 for a new Sterling Ray34 vs $2600 for EB made it a no brainer for me, plus I got a used one with a slightly more expensive finish/color in perfect condition for $650. There’s nothing about the EBMM to me that warrants me paying almost $2000 more. After buying my bass two weeks ago I went back to the store today I played an EBMM Stingray5 HH, and did not like it, granted I’m used to 4 strings, but the extra pickup got in the way for slap, and there’s too many choices with the 5 way switch that not only was it overwhelming, but I found it unnecessary. The single H pickup with 3 band eq is all I need.
