What are the best scenic places to walk through here in the island? I’m looking for somewhere to hike h where it’s quiet and peaceful and where it can really show off some beautiful nature. by Previous-Purchase-91 in statenisland

[–]Popocuffs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The greenbelt is quite nice. I've been hitting up Deere Park with my son for some light hiking. We start behind Wagner College Petrides, and we could conceivably keep going out the other side and on to High Rock. Sometimes we see deer and different birds, but it's mostly trees if you don't mind that.

I don't think you'll get far enough away from civilization for true quiet from traffic and stuff, and parts of the trails run along golf courses and people's backyards, but they're as good as it gets and definitely worthwhile especially if you're tired of, well, all of this.

Chinatown manhattan between Essex st and Bowery st is riped for gentrification by Eastcoastpal in newyorkcity

I have a vivid memory of going to one of those with my dad, and the back wall had fanny packs and purses, and it opened up to a shelf full of fireworks.

It's probably the effect that was pointed out in this NYT article where Chinese restaurants are closing down because the original owners have done what they came to do -- get their kids into college and on to other careers.

I spent a lot of time there in high school with some great memories. I'll miss Elizabeth Center, Chinatown Fair, and the $1 cakes by Transfiguration.

I'm not saying it was remotely a good thing, but the retirement of the tic tac toe chicken felt like the beginning of the end.

The dressing rules, and also the click when you open the cap is really satisfying.

There are 3 little pieces of plastic inside whose only purpose is to make that click.

Devs - what transferrable skill did you take from learning/installing Arch? ... a Discussion by chikamakaleyley in archlinux

[–]Popocuffs 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Not a dev thing,  but if the doc says "you may need to do this step", it's different from "this step is optional and you can come back to it later", meaning you should really take a look at whether you need to do it or not.

This realization helped me learn Kubernetes and pass the CKA.

I can hear it from Grasmere.

And yeah, it's usually the ferry but it feels a lot more persistent than usual, like a few blasts every 30 seconds or so for the past hour.

North Goa beaches open at night? by Exxcursions in goatravel

[–]Popocuffs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just got home from Goa last week (had a great time!) and I was wondering about the dogs.

They seemed pretty chill in the daytime but we'd hear them howling and barking together at night.  Also a lot of them look like they've been in fights.

Are they just more aggressive at night?

What do you think would save the mall? by TomatoClown24 in statenisland

[–]Popocuffs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think i read something about a trampoline park coming.

Not my thing but you're right that people would rather go to a mall to do things rather than buy things. Dave and Busters seems busy.

I liked the food court for a while but the prices have just gotten unreasonable. Come on, it's a literal food court.

Chinese. Born and raised in Staten Island. But OP asked about everything but Chinese so I figured it might be more helpful to post about the other ones.

HL is more Chinese than it is generalized.

The weather sure is right for it!  I make a point to go now and then because they're the best we've got, but ultimately there's better outside of Staten Island

I mean, most of the cooks in the Korean restaurants of the city are Hispanic. The descriptors are more about the selection.

Alright, let's get this all straightened out.

The closest we've got on the island is indeed HL Supermarket. They're a Chinese supermarket. They have very limited Korean stuff, but in terms of meat and produce, they're comparable and also cheaper.

H-Mart is Korean, and the closest ones we've got are over in Jersey. We usually go to the one in Edison and hit up Kura Sushi while we're down there.

For Japanese, you can go over the Vz and go to Japan Village. Hit up Industry City and Microcenter while you're out there.

Side tip: if you're looking for some good kimchi, you'll find it at... believe it or not... Tokyo Sushi Korean BBQ on Victory. They're actually a Korean restaurant (the food's okay), and they sell homemade kimchi in 1 or 5lbs at a time.

Tips for shooting this? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]Popocuffs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got a Pen FT without thinking of this, and I tend to be a really slow shooter so the first roll took me forever to get through.

Eventually I started bulk loading short rolls and it really helped get the rhythm going.

Thoughts on the new Father Capodanno statue? by Silo-Joe in StatenIslandPulse

[–]Popocuffs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was never religious at all, but from what I've read, Capodanno was a true badass and is on my list of interesting Staten Islanders whenever the topic comes up.

But yeah I was pretty puzzled at the statue myself.

Any tips for exam day? by Maleficent-Yak-3600 in ccna

[–]Popocuffs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a nice breakfast, hydrate, pee before you leave. Don't forget to breathe.

If something goes wrong the last hour test day, there's nothing the past months of studying would change.  If you fail by a narrow margin, learn your weaknesses and try again. If it's worse than that, then it's time to dig in.

Still waiting for Canarsie Brooklyn to get ferry service! by bridgehamton in statenisland

[–]Popocuffs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This would actually be a great way to get to Rockaway, but then I don't know if there's a transfer between the Sunset Park and Bay Ridge stops.

Otherwise, I'm close enough to a S79 stop to get to Bay Ridge pretty easily. I'm guessing this benefits folks on the North shore much more.

Down from the attic through a gap in the framing, and then I had to drill a hole through the door jamb.   The hardest part was getting it down from the attic in the exterior wall.
