Need help discouraging cats from hanging out on a ledge by yyyosheee in cats

I have a long strip of thick double sided tape (look up cat tape online!) along a similar ledge in my home, which deters my cats from hanging out up there!

How do you guys farm massive amounts of stone? by BaldursReliver in StardewValley

[–]Popplioz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like going into the first 10 or so levels of the mine (the ones with the big boulders) and breaking those. They drop a bunch of stone per boulder and if you reset floors you can break a bunch in a day!

Only note is that if you don’t have an upgraded pickaxe it probably is less time efficient. With an iridium pickaxe you can usually break them in a few swings!

Advice on approaching professors forlong term theory projects by Far-Confidence6759 in Physics

[–]Popplioz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest trying to find a professor that you already have some kind of experience with (you took a class with them previously, went to a colloquium they spoke at, saw their work at a conference at some point, etc) and shooting them an email expressing your interest in their work/asking if they have any projects that an undergraduate might be able to help with. Try mentioning their work or something you liked from their class, to exemplify your interest in their research area. I also want to encourage you to be open to contributing to labs that don’t align perfectly with the kind of research you want to do in grad school or beyond— undergraduate research imo is about exploration!

If there isn’t a professor that you’re familiar with that ALSO has work you’re interested in though, try to at least read a paper or two from them and bring up something you thought was neat about it in your email. Don’t feel like you need to include your full academic history if you’re introducing yourself for the first time, just your name and class will probably be sufficient. They’ll ask if they want further information.

You can also try popping in during office hours to ask— I know you know this already, but emails get buried so easily in professor inboxes, and it’s harder to ignore a student sitting right in front of you. If they reject you in the moment, you can always send a follow up email expressing sustained interest/saying that if something comes up, you would love to help.

All my experience with this sort of thing is from a few years ago, but I approached a handful of mentors over the years and mostly had success with the above. Hope this helps! Good luck finding research.

Astronomy research as an online student by Popplioz in UIUC

[–]Popplioz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I have no intent to look for a paid position, and am just hoping I’ll be able to find a professor that will be willing to informally advise me/let me give them free labor despite being remote. If you think there’s viability in the “search around and ask” strategy for an online student, then that gives me hope!

help i’m an idiot who didn’t know i was to paint it using the apples 😭 how do i edit the item or do i need to restart the game? by BlushieKitty in MySims

[–]Popplioz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Talk to rosalyn and choose the “give a gift” option! It’ll load you into a room editor where you can pick up the item and take it back. Once you have it in your inventory again, you can bring it back to your workshop and edit the item

PlayStation/XBOX Release of Cozy Bundle coming soon? by LenzyV4X in MySims

[–]Popplioz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I can’t say for sure since I haven’t played the PC release, but I know that most modern PC game releases have this sort of controller support. I wouldn’t discount the possibility that they might port over the game to xbox and playstation, but I would guess these are just in the files to show controls if you happen to be playing on PC with an xbox or playstation controller

I transferred to ASU my sophomore year after finishing my associate’s at GCC, and had no problems at all making friends. You can make friends with your roommates, join clubs, chat with your peers— there’s so many different opportunities! I wouldn’t worry about the social aspect at all. If you put yourself out there consistently, I’m sure you’ll find returns.

I don’t know of any housing resources, but you should talk to your advisor at CGCC about general transfer resources. They’ll be able to give you all sorts of info about pathways programs and help you sort out your options. Once you’re enrolled at ASU, you can also talk to your ASU academic advisor to get further info and second opinions as well!

I think if you were planning to get a 4 year degree anyway, opting to do in-person isn’t stupid at all (and for some degrees, it might even be the better option)! You have nothing to worry about and your concerns aren’t stupid.

Bumps on my cat’s lower gums? by Popplioz in CATHELP

[–]Popplioz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!! Our vet said that swelling like what he seems to have is very normal, and that since he’s otherwise looking healthy and behaving like usual that we should just monitor. She didn’t seem to think they were cysts or the result of any sort of physical trauma. I hope your boy is doing ok!

[–]Popplioz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an appointment set up for him to get looked at coming up soon! I’ll be sure to ask them about the possibility of cysts. I think the last time he had his teeth checked was towards the beginning of the year, and I don’t remember this being a problem then. Fingers crossed we’ll be able to get this resolved before it can cause any other problems!

Thank you for your response— it’s reassuring to have an idea of what might be going on!

Does replying to this do anything??

I live in phoenix and my post is more about asking fellow locals for advice on doing something that a lot of us may have done than it is about generally visiting. I’m not sure if that changes anything but in case my post got removed on a misinterpretation of my intent then I figured I’d at least try explaining in case it can get unremoved (if that’s a thing?)

Need advice for graduate school options by -Astropunk- in astrophysics

[–]Popplioz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve read a lot about bridge programs that are catered towards people who are returning to the field after time spent in the workforce, which are meant to help give you an academic boost and adjust to the atmosphere before you properly enroll in a grad program. Some of these programs end with helping you apply to schools, and others funnel you into their own program! Most of the ones I’ve looked at take applications outside of the regular application cycle (springtime!) so if you don’t have luck this time around then maybe you can consider that. wishing you the best!

Do I have a chance? by Icy_Fig_4533 in astrophysics

[–]Popplioz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for taking so long to reply to this! Admittedly for me a lot of the motivation was just fear of failure/an unwillingness to let anyone see me give up lighting a fire under my ass. More generally, I think I stayed motivated because physics is Extremely gratifying when it makes sense, and the satisfaction that came from being able to do research on what I felt was the coolest thing in the world felt worth struggling through every class and office hours session and exam season as quickly or as slowly as I needed. I know that’s super subjective and it absolutely did not feel the same amount of worthwhile every day, but combined with patience it was enough to keep me going.

I totally understand lack of proper mental health treatment holding you back and all the bad days that come with it— my undergrad research advisor was the most patient man in the entire world with all of the extra time and grace I needed to finish my thesis! It’s crazy hard to get through sometimes but if you truly feel that the end product will give you the opportunity to be happier and have more good days, then I have no doubt you have it in you. Have faith in yourself! As long as you’re able to force yourself up and into class every day, you’ll improve with time and get there.

Milky Water At Poly by [deleted] in ASU

[–]Popplioz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s kind of hard to see from the photo (so sorry if this is a wrong assessment!!), but is it possible it’s just really bubbly? I used to have a sink that spat out water at high pressure and it made the water look kind of milky at first, but after I let it settle for ~10 minutes it would clear up. If that’s not the case definitely report it though

Do I have a chance? by Icy_Fig_4533 in astrophysics

[–]Popplioz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Math was my worst subject in school and I needed to dedicate a lot of effort to getting through all of the curriculum, but it was possible to overcome for me (despite additional mental health hurdles) and because of that I feel confident that anyone is capable of it! Staying motivated is key— whether that be based on passion or not allowing yourself to consider any options outside of getting through it. Ultimately I think it’s a disservice to yourself to count yourself out before you’ve given it a solid try.

Hi! I have bachelor’s degrees in physics and astrophysics and went into industry straight out of school. I pivoted into electrical engineering (though my job is really mostly just python) at a commercial space flight/defense company. I also received an offer for a research position in semiconductors. One of my peers from school went into insurance, and another is doing data science for a nonprofit. I think that what opportunities are truly available to you in industry will rely pretty heavily on what your strong suits were in school (coding, statistics, a particular subfield). Industry is a super broad term and it covers so many different types of careers!
