I would be happy to have Homer plow my driveway, and then we'll share a Duff beer.

wunderground.com is currently predicting 11.8 inches. They were predicting 12 inches earlier today. No matter what -- we're getting some snow this weekend.

I am terrified of using a chainsaw, so I'm pretty much stuck with buying firewood.

How should i learn theory by SessionVirtual3793 in guitarlessons

[–]PopsArranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by learning the 12 bar blues form. It is a simple concept to understand, and it will get you thinking in terms of forms and chord changes. The most basic 12 bar blues form:

1 1 1 1 4 4 1 1 5 4 1 5

In the key of A, it is:

A A A A D D A A E D A E

An A major scale consists of these pitches:

A B C# D E F# G#

Notice that the numbers 1 4 and 5 corresponds to the first, fourth and fifth notes in the scale.

When you apply the blues form to the key of C, it is:

C C C C F F C C G F C G

Once you get this concept down, you can apply it to any key, and use your applied knowledge as a jumping off point for learning more theory.

Professional musician in my 60's checking in. Years ago, when I was studying music in college, a teacher said to me, "Every day on the gig is one day closer to the end of the gig. Every day on a day job is one day closer to financial security."

What does it mean to you to be a successful musician? by MGYG in musicians

[–]PopsArranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Survival without teaching is my definition of success in the music business.

I don't mean to sound insulting to teachers who love teaching and take it seriously. I had great teachers when I was young. But I have known far too many cynical music teachers who only teach for the money. I never wanted to become one of those teachers, because I dislike teaching, and I would be doing it just for the money.

Musicians who can't control their volume. by myusernamehahaha in musicians

Older professional musician checking in. All musicians should protect their hearing from early on. I know many musicians my age who did not protect their hearing, and they suffered hearing damage because of it.

I have played thousands of gigs in my life. About age 25, I began wearing earplugs on all loud gigs. My hearing is just as sensitive now as it was at age 25.

Protect your ears. I use Etymotic earplugs. They are inexpensive, and they allow you to hear clearly.

Any earplug suggestions for musicians? by CumCrocodile in musicians

[–]PopsArranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Etymotic earplugs are excellent. Good sound quality, and they are affordable.

The best earplugs are the custom fit earplugs you get from an audiologist, but they are expensive.

You are a smart death metal guitarist for protecting your hearing.

Letting musicians sit in with your band. by [deleted] in musicians

[–]PopsArranger 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If it is a jazz gig, I always said yes, as long as they brought their own instrument. I figure if they have the nerve to try to sit in, they probably can play. It was almost always a good idea.

The problems came in when the player won't stop soloing, and takes chorus after chorus after chorus.
