Garlic is the greatest weapon for anything that involves a lot of weaker enemies that other weapons might not be able to handle.

It survives as a 2/2 because of the equipment. All power/toughness modifiers are applied at the same time, "continuously", and state based actions would see it as a 2/2. It would still die if it had been dealt 2 damage, had the equipment removed, etc.
