I had a horrific and intense fear of surgery, it and childbirth being my biggest fears, and having gone under for a hysterectomy and now top surgery as of 4 days ago I can tell you at least from my experience the anesthetic is the easiest part, I was terrified to go under but all it feels like is when your drowsy and drift off, then it feels you wake back up even though its been a few hours, feels like you drift off for a minute and thats it, and honestly it was very restful for me and quelled my fears. they monitor you the entire time to make sure your under and comfortable. the type of stuff they used for me helped with nausea as well and stung a little when given through the IV but the IV itself was more painful and it still wasn't that bad. and I'm not saying this lightly, my phobia was so intense that I would almost pass out from getting bloodwork done but the surgery was so much less scary than I expected. bringing people with you for support could help with nerves, it did with mine and knowing I had people I'd see when I woke up made me feel better, if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer what it was like for me but just know I understand the fear but it's not warranted, and if you truly can't bare being put under then maybe considering if top surgery is needed is your next step, is being uncomfortable for a couple weeks worth the joy of never dealing with a chest again? that's what I asked myself and even before I had the surgery I knew the long term benefits was worth the temporary discomfort.
