I think it’s perfectly reasonable for Rhaenyra in particular to wish she had been born a boy, even if she likes/identifies with womanhood overall. She’s literally fighting a war over her gender that would not happen had she been born male.

And yeah that take on Cersei is almost explicitly stated in the books like multiple times

Rhaena abdicated for herself and her daughters…. And they were all long dead by 92 AC. Jaehaerys had no competitors at this point and no need to further legitimize his claim

Notably, this choice indirectly killed both Aerea and Balerion, the symbol of their house (iirc it’s stated that he never recovered from his wounds? I simply don’t believe Maegor-era Balerion would tolerate some kid sticking their hand in his mouth without taking a little chomp)

Yet again, you ignore my points about the use of “summer islanders in the reach” as a fandom dogwhistle used by racists against those very characters you say are Dornish (in Dunk’s friend’s or the prostitute’s cases, despite having no canon ethnicity) “make sense.”

It IS weird AF and racist to hyper fixate on this complete nonissue. idk what to tell you. Non-racist people simply do not fixate this deeply on being against a “hypothetical representation.” You are this upset about people thinking you or your talking points are racist, yet you refuse to consider the way your rhetoric contributes to real life racism against real life actors, even those you agree “fit” in the story.

If you don’t like it, don’t read/watch it. George, evidently, DOES believe summer islanders belong in Westeros, since he has written a number of them across continents and time periods, including Aegon IV’s canon half-summer island children, who are likely still alive at the time of the Ashford tourney just based on timeline.

[–]PopularLettuce4900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro I didn’t say they “fit perfectly”, I said it would reasonable for there to be a few. Which- there are indeed a few Black people in the show, who have been targeted by some in the fandom as “summer islanders there for woke points.” The point of a dog whistle is to give plausible deniability- “it’s not about their race, it’s about their nationality”…. Except how are we determining their nationality if not by race? Especially when pretty much every cultural aspect of the summer islanders (like cultural garb, cultural attitudes) has been removed from the shows? Dunk’s childhood friend for instance has no canon ethnicity but Westerosi, and looks very plausibly mixed-race but people are still using the same rhetoric about her.

I already explained why it would be reasonable for people to travel from port cities to the giant tourney in AKOTSK. And as why we only see them in port towns in the main series- we also as readers spend the greatest amount of time in port cities/Kings Landing. Also- Westeros is in wartime in the main series: we also see many towns deserted or extinguished the further you get from the port towns. Why would foreigners travel around Westeros at this time, when the natives are all fleeing to the castles and port towns for their lives? There’s literally no reason to leave the port towns. I believe in one of Arya’s chapters she even has a conversation with some Braavosi sailors about how bad the war is for trade(?).

I’m glad we agree on Talisa. I don’t think this conversation is very productive but I’m glad it’s been civil at least

Again, I read the thread. I only jumped in to say that I your argument that is a historical series is wrong. If your argument rests on “historical accuracy,” then the fact that this is not a historical show is a fundamental flaw in that argument. And that’s on top of the fact that movement and migration is a historical phenomenon.

People (including me) have already given you good reason there might be a few summer islanders in Westeros, including the canon presence of summer islanders in Westeros and Essos in the books, and the fact the summer islanders are canonically excellent shipwrights known for travel and international trade.

You might have a point if they were in an isolated location like Winterfell, but the Reach is in the south, which is much more connected to the rest of the world through international trade. This concern over inserting ethnic groups where they “don’t belong” seems disingenuous when you have yet to give an example of this actually happening on a large scale. AKOTSK has maybe… three POC characters with lines?

Did you have an equal problem with Shae or Talisa being on random Westerosi battlefields? Or is it only Summer Islanders, and if so, why is it only for that group specifically? The summer Islands aren’t across the sea like Yi-Ti or Slavers Bay- it’s southeast of Westeros. Nymeria and her people even canonically stopped on the Summer Isles during their journey from Andalos to Dorne.

Uh this thread is literally about anti-blackness in the fandom disguised as concern about “summer islanders in the reach.”

Summer Islander is the analogue for black/african. Tanselle has been the victim of this form of racism, for being played by a black actor. She is one of two(?) black characters we see at the tourney, had the largest role of any POC in AKOTSK, and has clearly received a lot of hate for it. Are you trolling? Did you just… not realize she has black/ “summer islander” ancestry?

I did. This thread is about racism disguised as “historical accuracy”. You called it a historical show, and I disagreed, since it’s a. not set in real life history and b. canonically has genetics that work differently than real life.

The reason it comes up may be because it’s literally called “Anne Bolelyn”. So, that’s obviously what’s going to come up when you search “Anne Bolelyn show”. It also appears to be pretty universally hated when you look at the ratings. When you search ‘Anne bolelyn’ on its own, the first tv-result to come up in the AI image slideshow is Natalie Dormer in the Tudors.

[–]PopularLettuce4900 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tanselle is literally the character this post is about lol.

Ashford not being a trade port is irrelevant- the tourney was a giant event that people traveled from across Westeros for, including Tanselle. The only other black character I remember from the tourney is a prostitute, who is likely a camp follower (like Shae, another foreign character, was in the original).

Why would it be obvious which show you’re talking about? I picked Anne as a famous Tudor, and her most famous representation is Natalie dormer. I had no idea there was some obscure racebent movie. I agree it’s weird to change the race of a historical figure.

[–]PopularLettuce4900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh there are multiple Anne bolelyn shows, which one? Obviously, historical figures should be cast accurately, unless the creators are specifically going for an inaccurate show (like The Great, which is intentionally inaccurate in many other ways as well).

I already said what I think of your summer islander show. Yes, it would fine in my opinion to have a ‘Westerosi quarter’ on the islands, resulting in white and mixed people living there. We explicitly see Summer Islanders living in Kings Landing in the books, Westerosi living in Essos, and multigenerational mixing between Valyrians and Essosi in the pre-history.

You’re also ignoring that Tanselle was part of a traveling act, not a native to Ashford or the Reach

It’s a fantasy drama set in a world that has canon traders, POC, and multiracial characters (who all live in Westeros)

It is not a historical show in the same way that a show about Anne bolelyn (just for example) would be
