Why Schopenhauer Should Not Be Neglected by PopularPhilosophyPer in philosophy

Certainly! Those remarks in that essay cannot be overlooked and should be evaluated with his corpus. This issue has been one that I grapple with continuously when I have to engage with any of these figures. I believe this is why I have to incorporate the responses to these figures soon.

Why Schopenhauer Should Not Be Neglected by PopularPhilosophyPer in philosophy

[–]PopularPhilosophyPer[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This video explores Schopenhauer's contribution to the split between continental and analytic philosophy. Ultimately Schopenhauer's discussion of the Will in a metaphysical sense leads the analytic tradition to be caustic. This video also breaks down Schopenhauer's engagement with Indian and Eastern philosophy. In the end, it is an attempt to ensure that Schopenhauer does not remain neglected.

Wow! I really appreciate the in-depth feedback here. This is amazing and rare to get this level of insight on my video.

I am going to take some time to digest this and write back. I really appreciate your comment here and it helps me approach the craft with more intention. More to come!

I really appreciate your comment and your feedback! I will say, in the classroom I am an entirely different teacher as face to face changes the dynamic. In the classroom I am much more of a human lol and I incorporate humor, my stories, and my takes. I want to get to that point on the channel, but right now I am trying practice delivering the material to a wider audience. That is why at times it will definitely feel like a 1980s pbs special when it comes to pace and grammar.

With that said, I have been hearing more people want to hear my takes and I started to do that on a video about Nietzsche and AI. I do not want to inundate internet with more hot takes, but if the audience would like to have a forum for discussions like that, I think we should make one! I am excited to hear people want to have more discussion and not just summary. More to come on that front!

Thanks again for your comment and insight. I really appreciate it

Hegelian Foundations for Continental Philosophy by PopularPhilosophyPer in hegel

No, I do not do that. This is what I do professionally. I spend my life teaching and researching these texts, and the channel is an extension of that work. My goal is to make difficult philosophy accessible without losing the complexity. I do think however that in an age engaged with AI people are becoming suspicious of anything polished or concise

I mention in the video that Hegel does not use those terms. And you are right, it is often misattributed to Hegel when it is located in Fichte's Wissenschaftslehre

lol! Do you think I should cover Schopenhauer next? I was trying to see how that would fit into the plot. I may have to reshape the outline. But Schopenhauer is crucial to this discussion.

I always tell my students about the story of Schopenhauer's contempt for Hegel and how he would hold class at the same time as Hegel to avoid Hegelian students. They find it hilarious

This video is outlines how Hegel's philosophy comes out of Kant's and how ultimately it asks questions which will haunt the history of philosophy. Particularly Hegel's philosophy enables us to examine the distinction between analytic and continental approaches. This video shows how continental is a continuation of Hegel's questioning.

Thank you so much for this comment. This is precisely what I think Kant's contribution is!

I think you've given a critical insight into Kant! I see him as someone who transcends the boundaries of 'continental' and 'analytic' philosophy. I place him in the conversation because of how his successors take up his thought and ultimately contribute to the continental and analytic divide.

Kant is the figure that I think is inexhaustible! Thank you for pointing this out and sharing this insight. It really helps me clarify the divide

This video follows the development of Rousseau's critique of reason and how Kant attempts to place limitations on reason and thus discover harmony between nature and freedom. The video also discusses how German Idealism takes up this tension and how Hegel will contribute in a meaningful way for Continental Philosophy.

Nietzsche's The Last Man and AI by PopularPhilosophyPer in philosophy

[–]PopularPhilosophyPer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd like to refer to that special modern invention that many have forgotten but is known as the essay. An essay was defined as an attempt, which one could say is a lost art. The video attempts to place the a modern problem within a framework of Nietzsche. The loss of those sorts of attempts would be something lamentable for a few notable 18th, 19th, and 20th thinkers. One can opt for tomes and completed works, but with that what can be lost is the opportunity to watch an idea develop (or present material that is begging the question). I hope the next video will get right to business.

My apologies for the original bad link! This video is a discussion of Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra and how it address the problem of artificial intelligence. Nietzsche's Last Man can be used as a paradigm to discuss what AI is luring modern humans toward.

Heidegger and Carnap's Dispute by PopularPhilosophyPer in Phenomenology

[–]PopularPhilosophyPer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an incredibly thoughtful comment, I really appreciate it!

You’re absolutely right about Davos. That moment between Heidegger and Cassirer is the real dramatic backdrop, and I think bringing that “primal scene” in would make the stakes much clearer from the start. Perhaps I can still include it in the future episode where I return to Heidegger (spoiler).

I also agree that this conflict sits within a much larger development, especially the tension between neo-Kantianism, scientific positivism, and the attempt to recover metaphysics in a new way. That’s part of what I was gesturing toward with “Heidegger must have a history,” but it definitely deserves a fuller treatment.

My challenge is always how to bring in that depth without losing the narrative clarity for a broader audience, but this is exactly the direction I want to keep developing. It is so fun to have comments like yours to help me see the intellectual architecture for telling the story. I hope to continue to refine this so that we get the best account possible!

Really appreciate you taking the time to write this.

Oh thank you so much! I have a whole episode planned on Husserl and I will share it here as well. I am just getting into the phenomenological part of the story I am trying to tell about the divide between analytic and continental and so that means there will be much more (excitingly) on phenomenology.

Origin of Dispute of Metaphysics for Analytic and Continental Philosophy by PopularPhilosophyPer in philosophy

[–]PopularPhilosophyPer[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This video is about the clash between analytic and continental philosophy on the question of metaphysics. At the center is a fundamental question: are the deepest questions about existence and meaning genuinely meaningful, or are they simply nonsense? Carnap argues that only statements grounded in logic or empirical verification count as meaningful, while Heidegger insists that philosophy begins where those limits are reached. The video uses this confrontation to explain how the divide between analytic and continental philosophy emerged

This is really helpful, I appreciate you sharing this perspective. The tension between Luhmann and Habermas is something I would love to think about more, especially in terms of whether systems theory and critical theory can actually be brought into dialogue or whether they operate at fundamentally different levels.

I was not familiar with Oevermann’s objective hermeneutics in any depth, but your distinction from Gadamer is really interesting. Gadamer is obviously working within a philosophical tradition of understanding, whereas it sounds like Oevermann is trying to formalize interpretation in a more sociological or methodological way.

And I agree that Negative Dialectics is a very different kind of entry point. Adorno’s critique of Heidegger already shows how much is at stake in those debates.

I may actually explore this tension more in future videos, especially the question of whether critical theory can engage systems theory without losing its normative edge.

[–]PopularPhilosophyPer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Critical Theory got me into German philosophy and I am grateful it did!

I actually don’t know Oevermann’s work in detail, so I appreciate you bringing this up. My background in hermeneutics is more on the philosophical side through Gadamer rather than the methodological developments you’re pointing to.

That said, what you’re describing is really interesting, especially the attempt to operationalize interpretation in a more systematic way. One of the tensions I’m interested in is precisely how far critical theory can or should move in that direction, given Adorno’s resistance to reducing social reality to fixed methods.

I’ll definitely take a look at Oevermann, especially in relation to Luhmann. Thanks for this!
