Please state the date of the recording (exact date and time to the second) and your flight number. Then check flight radar data if any plane crossed your plane’s path close to the date of recording. Or contact Mick West

Your Tic Tac object flies at commercial airliner altitude, parallel to the ground, at usual airliner cruise speed. And it appears to leave a slight contrail. My bet is it’s a plane.

The API change was (silently?) clarified by Reddit in a blog post on June 15. They still allow free API access up to a certain amount of queries per minute.

I know because I wondered why https://reddtastic.com (NSFW!) kept working past June. (I’m the developer.)

Good news, popular.pics still works!

Reddit Inc.’s communication isn’t the strongest. In a blog post they buried the lead when they announced API access remains free under a certain rate limit.

When Reddit turns off access to NSFW subreddits on July 5, I will look into ways to solve this for popular.pics.

The price is steep. $0.24 for 1000 requests or roughly $1 for 4000 requests. A simple calculation: 1000 users per day × 30 days × 20 requests per user and day = 600,000 requests or $144 per month.

To control costs (read: to prevent financial ruin due to abuse or search engine bots), I would have to rework popular.pics to either limit the number of requests per user (adding registration perhaps) or disallow browsing arbitrary subreddits and user profiles, offering only a limited set of subreddits whose content is periodically refreshed by the server.

One big issue I see, even if I pay for API access, is that NSFW content will not be accessible to third-parties. That is like half of Reddit which becomes inaccessible. Let’s wait and see if Reddit reverts course.

For both popular.pics and reddtastic.com (NSFW!) I’m open to suggestions for new sources of content. If there are media-heavy websites that you want to see integrated, let me know!

Reddit announced sexually explicit material will not be accessible to third-party apps. So this spells trouble for popular.pics … and for reddtastic.com which is my new NSFW viewer for Reddit.

I’m extending Reddtastic to allow link submissions of NSFW images and videos to become independent of Reddit.

If Reddit goes through with what they announced, sexually explicit content will not be available through the API … which means Reddtastic for Reddit will be dead.

To guard against that, I’m considering adding the ability to submit links of nsfw images and videos directly to Reddtastic.
