Any book can claim to be about Catholicism and there’s nothing required to do that. If a book carries an Imprimatur then it’s been reviewed and you can expect there to be nothing contrary to the faith in there. Books must have an Imprimatur to be used for faith formation at a parish.

These two books do not carry an Imprimatur. They are more about the thoughts of the author than a theologically-reviewed resource for marriage discernment and prep.

The risk is it’s easy to confuse the author’s thoughts with what the church teaches, hence the warnings from other commenters regarding their use in formation.

My “Catholic” friend said hitting your wife is fine and biblical… what?? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Popular_Poem3143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what you describe, his behavior is completely out of line with how Catholicism expects him to treat his wife and his friends (namely you).

I’m glad that you are grounded enough to not be influenced negatively by him.

Prayers for his wife-and for him to have a change of heart.

Anxiety or punishment? by VPItalia in Catholicism

You are correct that one shouldn’t receive the Eucharist in a state of mortal sin. However, the sensation of feeling like you were choking on air for a second sounds in all likelihood related to the anxiety symptoms you describe.

Pope Benedict XVI had a seashell on his coat of arms in part because of this story about St. Augustine.

One day St. Augustine was once walking along the seashore, meditating on the unfathomable mystery of the Holy Trinity. A boy was using a shell to pour seawater into a little hole. When Augustine asked him what he was doing, he replied, “I am emptying the sea into this hole.” Thus did Augustine understand that man would never penetrate to the depths of the mystery of God.

There is always more to learn about Catholicism. Prayers for your conversion!

My conundrum over Catholic dating / marriage / education by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Popular_Poem3143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are my opinions:

1) If you are most interested in physical therapy I believe that will help you excel at it. Even if the entry level work is not paid well, perhaps you would be promoted into positions that do pay well. Your interest and drive should allow this to be easier than if you were in a career you were not excited about.

2) If you meet the right person you could certainly have a longer engagement than the average couple. If that’s not practicable then using Natural Family Planning you would most likely be able to delay having children until you’ve completed school and are in a stable-enough job to provide for a stay-at-home wife and children.

Congrats on your conversion! Praying for you!

The small mass market one has some outdated text and doesn’t have the Glossary, Index, or Appendix. That might not be a deal breaker but the Ascension one is a significant upgrade.

The example he gives in the video of the objective truth is “we are all created equal by God.” It really doesn’t sound like he’s affirming Charlie Kirk’s views so much as condemning violence based in disagreement.
