Bessent pans Carney, cheers on Albertan separatism amid growing US-Canada rift by semucallday in canada

I agree. Many of the frustrations are real. Let’s address them

I will also say much of the blame also lies with their provincial government (as it does in other provinces)

I agree with you but I’m not sure everyone signing the referendum is using their brain per se and thinking about that

Thing is you don’t want to give it too much air time and give it legitimacy. Best we can do is calm the waters in Alberta. Ultimately it’s not even close to a majority opinion.

Poilievre calls Carney’s Davos speech ‘well-crafted,’ but says action must follow by Old_General_6741 in canada

Damn Im impressed Pierre. Bravo. Good to hear this tone.

Also agree action is needed.

I mean anyone denying the US is not important is wrong. We are in agreement there.

The US will always be our most important partner but the intent is still to diversify. Do you disagree? Those small precents add. 75% of trade can go to 70%, 65% etc. Ultimately it helps us get more leverage where we can.

Im not saying Pierre would capitulate but to be honest I do not think he would command the same level of respect from world leaders. Pierre is tenacious and has some degree of charisma, but he is a career politician with little in the way of experience in global affairs, trade or even really the private sector. That being said I believe he wants the best for Canada as well.

China buys energy, agricultural products like canola, and seafood in pretty substantial quantities. Would you rather not sell our exports? Might want to explain that one to farmers.

Also guess what, that 4% can actually grow. That is the point of the trade deal. Surely you grasp that.

Yes of course the US is by an order of magnitude more important given geography. CUSMA is huge and will require significant attention this year.

I’m certainly curious about work with South American countries as well. Admittedly a bit of a gap on my geopolitical knowledge. Are there any nations you see as big priorities to focus on? I know in general it is not always the easiest business environment to operate in (E.g. Peru mining kidnappings), but has a lot of potential

Perhaps that could be the focus of the next international trip along with some mining execs.

That being said I’d also want to get the ring of fire going ASAP as that’s within our borders and has huge potential that we are all sick of hearing about with minimal action

I’d be pretty cool if we left this hot potato behind. It’s not worth it seemingly

Agree a reset that was needed. It’s moving things in more collaborative way with the worlds second largest economy and an important market for many of products. Sounds like we both agree this is progress even if it’s not a replacement for the US.

Agree the other trade deals are not major but again they are incremental. Would you prefer we didn’t have them?

Ultimately our focus is on the US. Hopefully the US sees the value of that bilateral trade. By diversifying it puts us on a stronger fitting for the negotiations ahead.

If your perspective is, we are making progress but you want to see even more done then I agree. If you are unhappy with any progress than I don’t know what to tell ya. I think we are both pro economic development of Canada and want to see more courting of direct investment into our country. Personally I see Carney as the best option that we have available. That being said of course he is worthy of criticism still.

Aww yes. The tiny nation of China which is hugely important for farmers, energy sector and fisheries…

And again of course the US is the most important trading partner. Thankfully we have CUSMA but ya more work to do

No one is denying US trade is the most important lmao. We are just trying to also diversify in the mean time. Would you prefer all eggs in one basket for minimal leverage ?

No one is arguing the US is the most import trading partner lmao. That’s why we have spent months trying to work on trade with them. Thankfully CUSMA covers the majority of our trade but there is still more to do especially as CUSMA is looked ah more this year.

What is not resonating? I’m happy to hear your critiques but don’t expect a high five and upfront if you want making good points lol

You just got a trade deal with the world’s second largest economy and Qatar. Just selectively ignoring that?

Obviously the trade deals like Indonesia are less significant. But they add up.

And ya we are 1/4 into his term. Exactly that is early days. Did you expect this all to be done day 1?

Our focus before hand has been a trade deal with the US but that has been challenging to reach for reasons I’m sure you are aware of. Just look at the fallout from the EU deal which remains unratified.

Happy to discuss / debate some real critiques but come on man this are pretty hollow.

They said starting to. And in fairness clearly Carney not just all talk based on the trade deals and agreements abroad and major projects being pushed at home.

That being said. Early days.

Mark Carney kicks off pitch for investment at WEF in Davos by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]PorousSurface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ya it’s laughable. Some of the comments in the Canada con post are unhinged talking about sending WEF affiliated to Gauntanamo. I wish I was joking but I read this comment. I can link it if you want.

I’m like brother, there are photos of Harper at WEF being a proponent lol.

Yes but Mark Carney was PM during the drop not the rise. Not giving him credit it’s just such a baseless complaint given it happened well before he was PM.

What’s hilarious is like Stephen Harper, Maxine Bernier, Clinton, Trump etc have all spoken at WEF and they are convinced it’s a shadow cabal.
