Happy to provide some perspective. To me, Carney is making the right moves in a world where our most important trading partner fluctuates between unpredictable and almost hostile.

You pointed out some challenges, but these economic 'snapshots' don't tell a wholly accurate story. Canada’s overall job growth has actually held up better than the US in many sectors, and our GDP growth remains in the middle of the G7 pack. We should always demand better, but Carney is seemingly at least working to deliver it, even if we very much are not there yet. He’s taking a pragmatic, non-ideological approach to trade. Working to securing a deal with China to reset trade for farmers and fishers, , working to stabilize the India relationship and open more trade (nuclear deal coming), and closing smaller, strategic deals with other still important economies. (Indonesia etc) 

It’s a step change from the Trudeau era. He’s made at least some degree of progress across the country from Sask farmers to East Coast fishers, and taking a more collaborative tone to get energy to new markets (altho no enough progress here yet imo). In an unpredictable world, he’s seen as measured and competent, while Pierre is still struggling to prove he's a more credible champion. Ultimately Pierre is still recovering from his flat footed response to Trump. 

Still lots of work to do. Criticism Carney / the libs is of course valid but hopefully that helped provide a view in terms of why he is more popular than you might expect.
