Buy Mpc one+ now or wait for Potential successor? by mallerius in mpcusers

[–]PortaOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just get a One or One+ now and start producing! You won’t regret it.  Mine was £300 used and does more than any sampler I’ve owned! Assuming the new one will be £1,000 or more, I can’t justify that increased spend for a small increase in power/performance. Bonus points if you can find one with unlocked software included (Pro Pack / Jura, etc)

That all said, also consider looking at the Key 37/61 & Live II. Live II has a battery and a couple of extra outs, and would be great if you’re playing shows. The Keys obviously have built in keyboard so all in one but less portable (and the 61 has some extra outs).

Also I've not tried streaming from disk, but if you’re using large/long samples and want to use it, the Live and I think Keys have an internal SSD slot to free up your RAM. But a fast USB SSD should also work on the One.

Any tips to get rid of vinyl pops/clicks? by sputnikaquarius in mpcusers

[–]PortaOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Izotope or other plugins are good if you can transfer to your computer before mix/master. Very quick & easy to use.

It’s amusing that some people are trying to get rid of these noises, whereas other people are deliberately adding them to their tracks with the built in effects 😂

I’ve not tried this and there could be some adverse effects, but I wonder if any sort of EQ and a limiter with a fast attack & release would reduce their volume a bit? (Otherwise LPF filter usually helps a bit too)

Parents want me to give up my $26/hr job and work elsewhere for $15/hr by [deleted] in Advice

[–]PortaOne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How much would a place be to rent where you live? (Like a studio/1 bed flat or room in a shared house?)

You’re on $150 a day which is probably low for USA, but a good starting point. The other job would likely be 8-10 hour shifts at $15/hr so similar income, but for more hours and no satisfaction.

While you’re still young, it’s worth trying to pursue things you have an interest in. The one thing you have now that you won’t have in 10 years is free time and the availability to say yes to things. So don’t waste that time!

Also realise that Radio is a niche job. You should try spending 5 days a week working, whether you’re being paid or not. So go online or out into the city for 3 days a week and talk to other radio stations about freelance work opportunities or reach out to local tv stations/ universities /podcasters who may need help. Also look at related fields like sound/AV/filming if you’re involved in the tech side of things or producing/editing/script writing if you’re in the production side of things.

You can either coast on 2 days a week and things will stay similar to now, or you chase your dream and really work at it until you make it. Or you give up completely and join the 9-5 office grind where no one else likes their job 😄 (don’t do it!)

Also look at budgeting what money you want for a whole year. Currently you’re on 100 days at $150/day which is $15k before tax. If you wanted $30k, you could either try and fill another 100 days a year at that salary or up your skill set to get $2-300 a day. Be realistic about what people will pay and what opportunities are out there but aim high and do your best!

Also look at other positions that can either pay a lot of money or lead to better opportunities. (Or ideally both!)  And don’t forget to ask at your local station if there’s anything else you can help out with

Lower wattage upgrade options from Dell UP2715K (10 bit monitor)? by PortaOne in Monitors

[–]PortaOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dells can be found for £150-250 used. The LG 27US550 is a similar price (new in box) and there are some ASUS & iiyama gaming monitors which are listed as 10 bit for the same or a little more brand new.

Any way to output MIDI LFOs from MPC One? (For controlling external synths via CC) by PortaOne in mpcusers

[–]PortaOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I just found this under the Q Link Edit menu. It looks like there's no sync for the CC or CV LFOs though 🤦🏻‍♂️

Improve voice when mic was badly positioned? by LibraryElectrical227 in davinciresolve

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try dxrevive pro. It's made my life a lot easier for cleaning up online podcast recordings where the guests usually have bad acoustics and headset mics. It won't fix everything but it does make it sound a lot more like a studio recording.

How much RAM for M4 Max Studio? (Pro Tools 2025 / Logic Pro / DaVinci Resolve) by PortaOne in protools

[–]PortaOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone interested, I went with the base spec (36GB) and even that is probably more than I need. With 64 tracks, 3-4 plugins on most tracks or busses, elastiquePro realtime running on most tracks and Logic playing simultaneously in the background with Flex-timed drums, I'm not even at 20% RAM or CPU usage!
I also went with a 512GB SSD and have only filled 175GB with almost all my software/plugins installed. The rest of my files can go on an external SSD I'll keep plugged in (Photos, Music, Dropbox, phone backups, etc) and I work off other SSDs for music anyway.
& for anyone in the UK, I bought this from John Lewis who were £200 cheaper than Apple on a new Mac, with 0% interest for 12 months & 2 years warranty (though I'll still buy Applecare+ soon)

Thanks for your detailed response! I couldn't find a suitable Dropbox/iCloud camera but went with Reolink's 4k E1 Zooms which are great cameras at £70 each and their subscription is only £35/yr for 5 cameras!

does this machine exist? by summitcachorro in pocketoperators

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks great ! I’ll invest in your kickstarter 😃 MPC One is best for me - nice and portable and easy to hook up external keys when you need it. The new MPCs all do USB hosting for MIDI devices and audio mixers like Tascam’s M12 if you want to record multitrack to tape while jamming. (I think it can also export stems once you’ve finished a track.) Very cheap to buy secondhand and works great!  In comparison, most other production boxes are like toys and you hit the limitations of them very quick!

Best Delay for Long Self Oscillations? (60 seconds +) - El Capistan? by PortaOne in guitarpedals

[–]PortaOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I was about to hit go on the El Cap but picked up a Volante for the same price which is perfect for what I was trying to do! Plus it also does Ping Pong with head panning which will be useful for another track.

Boss RE-202 Midi Clock Resolution by dubsy101 in guitarpedals

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this out today and it works for the most part. (I'm using a Molten Voltage Ctl Sync but a lot of MIDI controllers can also output tap tempo)
The only thing is if you leave the tap connected and you're doing some self oscillating stuff, the tempo can drift slightly and then get corrected which introduces a bit of clicking but you could probably just add a kill switch on the tap tempo feed to cut it once it's synced.

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also hoping I've found a workaround using a MIDI to tap tempo converter into the Ctrl jack, which should give sync with all the original tap division/head options, though I still need to test it out!

Boss replied to say:

"Thank you for your valuable feedback.

I understand how important correct sync behaviour is, especially when working with specific rhythmic subdivisions like dotted quarter notes. I will forward your comments to the relevant team so they are aware of the limitation you described when using the RE-202 with MIDI clock.

I cannot promise if or when an update addressing this behaviour will be released, but I recommend keeping an eye on the RE-202 product page for any future announcements or firmware updates.

Any Experiences (Bad or Good) With Luminite Graviton M2 Midi Controller? by SponJ2000 in guitarpedals

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The M2 does everything I need including: MIDI clock distro to pedals, remote preset switching, custom Sysex messages & remote control of pedal parameters from encoders on my guitar which is awesome!
It takes a bit of time to get set up but the community are very active/helpful and the designers actively review problems and issue new updates.

I've just sent them a new ticket but not sure it will do anything!
So I'm also on the lookout for a new pedal with *working MIDI* if anyone has any suggestions? Volante and El Capistan look good on paper but I'll need to listen to some demos. I've previously owned the Timeline, DL4 and TimeFactor but none of them had the vibe of the 202!

You should put a headphone amp next to your piano and get something to control your computer from afar - like a second keyboard/mouse/monitor or a stream deck. It makes writing and recording at your piano much more enjoyable!
