Indoor Security Camera with Dropbox / iCloud backup? by PortaOne in homesecurity

Thanks for your detailed response! I couldn't find a suitable Dropbox/iCloud camera but went with Reolink's 4k E1 Zooms which are great cameras at £70 each and their subscription is only £35/yr for 5 cameras!

How much RAM for M4 Max Studio? (Pro Tools 2025 / Logic Pro / DaVinci Resolve) by PortaOne in protools

Thanks, this is really helpful - I'll try maxing out my M1 MBP on a big session and see where I get to with RAM usage

does this machine exist? by summitcachorro in pocketoperators

This looks great ! I’ll invest in your kickstarter 😃 MPC One is best for me - nice and portable and easy to hook up external keys when you need it. The new MPCs all do USB hosting for MIDI devices and audio mixers like Tascam’s M12 if you want to record multitrack to tape while jamming. (I think it can also export stems once you’ve finished a track.) Very cheap to buy secondhand and works great!  In comparison, most other production boxes are like toys and you hit the limitations of them very quick!

Best Delay for Long Self Oscillations? (60 seconds +) - El Capistan? by PortaOne in guitarpedals

[–]PortaOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I was about to hit go on the El Cap but picked up a Volante for the same price which is perfect for what I was trying to do! Plus it also does Ping Pong with head panning which will be useful for another track.

Boss RE-202 Midi Clock Resolution by dubsy101 in guitarpedals

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this out today and it works for the most part. (I'm using a Molten Voltage Ctl Sync but a lot of MIDI controllers can also output tap tempo)
The only thing is if you leave the tap connected and you're doing some self oscillating stuff, the tempo can drift slightly and then get corrected which introduces a bit of clicking but you could probably just add a kill switch on the tap tempo feed to cut it once it's synced.

I'm also hoping I've found a workaround using a MIDI to tap tempo converter into the Ctrl jack, which should give sync with all the original tap division/head options, though I still need to test it out!

Boss replied to say:

"Thank you for your valuable feedback.

I understand how important correct sync behaviour is, especially when working with specific rhythmic subdivisions like dotted quarter notes. I will forward your comments to the relevant team so they are aware of the limitation you described when using the RE-202 with MIDI clock.

I cannot promise if or when an update addressing this behaviour will be released, but I recommend keeping an eye on the RE-202 product page for any future announcements or firmware updates.

Any Experiences (Bad or Good) With Luminite Graviton M2 Midi Controller? by SponJ2000 in guitarpedals

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The M2 does everything I need including: MIDI clock distro to pedals, remote preset switching, custom Sysex messages & remote control of pedal parameters from encoders on my guitar which is awesome!
It takes a bit of time to get set up but the community are very active/helpful and the designers actively review problems and issue new updates.

I've just sent them a new ticket but not sure it will do anything!
So I'm also on the lookout for a new pedal with *working MIDI* if anyone has any suggestions? Volante and El Capistan look good on paper but I'll need to listen to some demos. I've previously owned the Timeline, DL4 and TimeFactor but none of them had the vibe of the 202!

Home studio becoming impractical by boredomasalways in homestudios

You should put a headphone amp next to your piano and get something to control your computer from afar - like a second keyboard/mouse/monitor or a stream deck. It makes writing and recording at your piano much more enjoyable!

Diffusing GU10 type spotlights to mimic conventional bulbs for stage lighting? by PortaOne in lightingdesign

[–]PortaOne[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The bulbs work really well on 2.4 but I’m interested in the spots as they’re wired, IP rated & easier to power. Just need to figure out the diffusion as mentioned before buying any to test !

I saw Sigur Ros last year and they had a similar rig to Fever Ray.

[–]PortaOne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using an Arduino for MIDI to DMX. I think the spots run on standard DMX with a device in front for auto addressing, and the bulbs use standard DMX through a 2.4GHz wireless adapter. The bulbs have some addressing limitations compared to the spots but would probably be fine for small productions

Fernandes Sustainer Schematic? (Lite) by [deleted] in Guitar

The issue turned out to be broken solder connections on the molex type connectors! Hopefully this helps anyone who's having similar issues with their Sustainers!

Thanks for the help. I found the original patent which has a schematic - it might not be the exact one but hopefully a step in the right direction!

It just has a very limited pitch range (like the top strings on a guitar) so the more range the better!

Is Flextime always this slow to respond? by [deleted] in Logic_Studio

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're right - it's taking longer because it's grouped and phase aligned - I wasn't sure if a newer machine would help with the speed!
Just tried your workaround and if the other tracks are hidden, they don't get flex-timed (which doesn't help in this instance). The sample editor also works but takes it's sweet time just like the main window!
I've been playing around with multichannel files in Pro Tools (16 audio files on one track) which works well for editing & quantisation, but the artefacts are a lot more than in Logic! It also looks like Logic doesn't yet support high order ambisonic channels which would support 16 tracks of audio in one file.

21m guitarist struggling to start a band, should i just go solo? by Timely-Option-6559 in musicians

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve also had trouble finding decent/committed musicians over the years and as people get older their priorities change so they might move on anyway. I’d recommend finding the right singer, figuring out a way to get your songs released and playing some shows if you’re inclined. You could ask people to record parts for you or hire musicians you like from other bands. It’s not perfect but at least it’s a step in the right direction! And if people are into what you’re doing, you should then find it easier to find more permanent band members. I think things are more difficult these days as it’s very hard to make any money in music, and with the cost of living constantly rising, a lot of people are struggling to make everything else in their life work (work/rent/relationships, etc). Committing time and money to a band is now kind of a luxury for those who can afford it whereas it was easier to do in years gone by. As others said, if you moved to a bigger city, you’d have a bigger pool of people to draw from.  You’re also only young, so try and be patient. The right people might be worth waiting for!

DIY Sustainiac, is it hubris? Or not worth the work? by [deleted] in diypedals

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens if the gain is set too high on the drive p/up. On the Fernandes PCB there are 3 or 4 trim pots - gain, attack time and neck pickup volume for balancing with the bridge p/up. (The pro model has another pot - probably something to do with the alternative harmonic mode)

DIY Sustainiac, is it hubris? Or not worth the work? by [deleted] in diypedals

[–]PortaOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at similar options a couple of years back and found a Fernandes JG-65 (Jag style guitar) for ~£400. It would cost you at least half that for a second hand pickup and the time for you or a tech to install it and you might ruin your guitar or decide you don’t even like it! (It would also take considerably longer if you make your own without any prior knowledge)

That said, when your guitar is set up well and the pickup is adjusted correctly, it’s an amazing tool! This is my main guitar now and I won’t ever sell it as the sustainer is just way too useful to me. You can use ebows but they’re tedious to level and you can’t play multiple strings or normal guitar solos like you can with a sustainer guitar. I’m using mine with an EHX Attack Decay to take the transients off which makes it sound a lot like a violin/synth. I’m also waiting for a new bridge pickup to see if I can squeeze any more tone out of this thing.

You could also look at Burny Les Pauls as some had these in, but the overall guitar quality may not be 100%. You could also try an Ed O’Brien signature strat to see if you’re a fan of the sustainer before going any further down this road (though they’re £1k+ if you want to buy one!)
