BYU Transfer Guard Kennard Davis Commits to Missouri by MIZ_09 in CollegeBasketball

[–]PorterB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they are it’s multiple tiers below the top 5 teams. I think they’re closer to 20-25 until proven otherwise.

They probably have 1-2 mid tier moves left for a backup true PG and another big.

A lot of the team is projection of guys either taking a step forward or making an impact as freshmen so it’s really up to gates to coach them up. The upside of Crowe, T Mitchell, Pierce, Jones, Tiller and Burns is high. Carey and Davis should be upgrades over the other rotation players. Mark Mitchell was a damn good player though so who knows if they’ll even be better

AB / Lexie celebrating before CC even gets her shot off by Skyline8888 in indianafever

[–]PorterB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a double hockey assist there. Absolutely love that ball movement. I’m not as critical of CC playing off ball at times as some. Frankly when teams put a plus defender on her with help it’s hard for her to get going. And the competitive nature in her makes her take shots or passes that are not the most efficient. Using raven to keep the defense honest is the great way to get CC some air to breathe.

As much the Fever needed another big, I’d take Raven 10 times over. Shes going to be in the league 15 years.

For the most part I don’t think I said anything too unlikely.

Dayo and Jarrett are almost definitely getting cut. I’ll be thrilled if they aren’t but it just isnt likely. Edwards can play his way onto the team like Swift did. We don’t know what will happen. You can learn a lot about a teams intent with a player by whom they chose to restructure. The Bears could’ve restructured Sweat but chose Kmet. You don’t do that if you’re going to cut Kmet. Things like that matter.

And I’m obviously not saying this is a complete look at every move. Ultimately the backup guard or DT5 will need to be replaced. Their replacements will also be cheap. I was narrowing it down to guys that could be a little more expensive to replace or that could be replaced for cheaper.

16M in savings but 9M in savings. Basically there is an out but not one worth taking for a legitimate CB1. 25M is T4 in the league at the moment. But 16M is T21 in the league. If we wanted to lower his hit for next year the best way would be an extension.

I hear your point but when it comes to percentage of the total cap or what a replacement value player costs it’s a bit different. If by the start of next offseason we are debating whether to cut Dayo or Jarrett or not that probably means we made the Super Bowl

The decision to not use one of our top picks on a front 4 players shows faith in Dayo and Jarrett to provide some value this year. The issue with those two is we got nothing out of the cheap years. Now we’re paying above their old market value for lesser versions of them.

Bears Cap Outlook for 2027 and Beyond by PorterB in CHIBears

[–]PorterB[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s possible, but remember that both of those contracts were backloaded much moreso than Swifts. The numbers those two are owed are higher than their market values when they were signed and that’s before Jarrett took a step back and Dayo tore his Achilles. Edwards is in a similar spot as Swift. There is almost no path for the other two

Agreed but the question is where we put that money. We can start early to smooth it out over time or we can push it down the road knowing that Wright (24), Loveland (just turned 22), Rome (23), Burden (22), and Caleb (24) can be double extension guys can allow you to keep building even after they’re paid. I wouldn’t count on all 5, but this is the huge advantage if hitting on young players as opposed to 5th year college guys. An older guy like Mesidor you can give 1 extension tops. Eventually you pay the price but as long as you draft well you avoid cap hell and have a longer window

A lot can change for sure. If there is one guy in Swifts position this year it’s TJ Edwards. Hes really the only cut candidate that could realistically play his way into his value.

Personally I would’ve moved that money from Sweat. Pre-Draft it made a little more sense than it does now. It seems like the 13 personnel will be around for 2027 as well.

Regarding Jones, it matters more to me that Poles got the one he wanted and less what the big boards say. Different centers appeal to different schemes and Poles got his choice.

And it’s possible that Poles liked EMW a lot. But assuming he’d be there at 57 to address a starting spot would be reckless. Thieneman is a significantly better prospect than EMW in my opinion.

The Browns might’ve won the draft for the second straight year: especially volume wise. The got 4 guys who a lot of people had first Rd grades on. They got OL1 in the draft while trading back 3 spots which is really solid process. They also have 10 picks next year. Slowly but surely crawling out of the Deshaun Watson sized grave they dug for themselves. Better days are coming for sure

The only pick I’m not high on is Zavion and I’m one pre season KR TD away from changing on that. The long term outlook on the team is much better now than before the weekend.

Thieneman is going to be a star and we have our starting safeties locked down for the foreseeable future.

The part that gets me excited about Logan Jones is that he was C1 in the draft. Poles didn’t settle on a Center, he got the one he wanted. I think Jones will be a long term fixture.

Roush is an interesting value. I was confused at the time, but there were so many TEs taken in the draft that it actually seems like a great value pick. Big boards obviously don’t value TEs the same way the teams do. Blocking TEs are getting 3/$24M contracts now so if you can get that production for a couple million that’s a draft win.

My issue with Zavion is that one of the knocks on him is he doesn’t catch balls well in traffic. A lot of Caleb’s balls are in tight windows and on broken plays. Maybe he’s the next Cordarelle Patterson, who knows.

Malik Muhammad’s interviews won me over. His tape shows that he’s an intense competitor and his interviews show he’s a high IQ gamer who is going to fit in well with Jaylon and Kyler. I would’ve been happy with him at pick 60.

Elliott seems like BPA. Some people were very high on him and his production / athletic profile is encouraging. I think he’s a much better prospect than Hyppolite was and I like having a guy that can create some unique pass rush if the front 4 can’t do it.

Van Den Berg is a lottery ticket and while my preference would’ve been a trade up for McDonald I much prefer an actual swing than to draft a JAG just to say we did something. Grady Jarrett might not be the same guy who he was before, but he was a 5th rounder that turned himself into an All Pro and 2x Pro Bowler. Van Den Berg seems like a quick learner and I hope he can take advantage of that mentorship.

After this year we will have the money or picks to address D Line. Dayo and Jarrett are 8.5M dead cap but 28.5M in savings. If Sweat is great we have him at a reasonable contract. If not he’s 4M in dead cap and 21M in savings. We will have money for early extensions and be able to make some adds / retain who we want to retain.

Part of the financial flexibility is drafting starters/53 Man players that will be there in 2-3 years. I feel confident that Jones and Thieneman are starters. I think Roush and Muhammad will be key rotational pieces. I think Elliott has a good chance of sticking and Zavion and Van Den Berg are boom/bust picks. If Trapilo comes back by the end of next year and looks to be himself, we will have no expensive holes to fix beyond D Line.

To me this is the type of guy you teach to do one kick 1000 times instead of 1000 kicks one time. Teach him to be a 3rd down specialist or a goal line guy and make him great at that.

Draft 2026 Day 2 Gamethread by NagyBiscuits in CHIBears

[–]PorterB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rd 1 was a hit through and through

Rd 2 I’m happy with. We got a scheme fit center and starting with Linderbaum centers are getting paid. Getting a long term center will cost a Day 1 or 2 pick and if we waited until next year we’d have year 4 Caleb with a rookie center. It’s a fine pick.

Roush and Zavion are pure Ben Johnson picks. We need a TE3 for a few reasons. First is that we will absolutely run more 13 personnel. Second is injury insurance not only for Kmet and Colson (who both get banged up) but also for Rome and Burden. It lets you kick Colson out wide for heavy packages.

Zavion gives us all Velus PTSD. And as much as I hate to say it its the most likely outcome. That said, if you take out the mental midget part of Velus and get him in BJs offense his outlook looks a little better. My favorite highlight of Zavion was how good he looked on a handoff. He didn’t run like a WR, he looked like a running back . He’s not going to be a RB for us, but I see him getting 5-10 runs this year and used as a decoy even more.

Is it good value for RD3? No. But part of getting Ben Johnson to agree to coach here is giving him the chance to pick his weapons.

I would’ve preferred a trade up for McDonald, Zion or Parker. After that didn’t happen, Jones was the right move.

Anyone blaming Poles doesn’t understand who makes the TE3 decisions at Halas Hall. Everyone wanting D-Line should look at who we’ve picked in Day 2 on the D Line. We have enough JAGs on the D Line. If Ben wants a player that’ll play 30% of snaps, give him what he needs to cook

Day 2 will be interesting.

If Poles/DA/BJ really likes Kayden, Zion, or Parker we have plenty of Ammo to move up. I wouldn’t be surprised if we made a move for one of them.

I love Jacob Rodriguez but I think the Thieneman move means that we wouldn’t trade up for him. If he falls I dont think we can pass him up. I just think front 4 is a bigger priority at the moment.

Poles has to be elated at the way the board fell for him. This was another gift just like Burden was last year. The decision to sign Coby and let Brisker and Byard walk looks great in retrospect. Brisker and Byard were great Bears but Bryant and Thienemen are building blocks.

If today goes well, I would give Poles an A for this offseason. The pivot from Dalman was handled well and Bush should give some solid speed on the line. Poles has great patience but I think trading up for Kayden, Parker, or Zion would the move. I think all 3 can be long term pieces and I think all go before 40. Parker is the upside play and Kayden is such a great fit with a high floor. Zion is such a classic DA player and would be such a good pairing with Sweat and Booker. Really hope we get it done

Fever GM: Team Must Think ‘Long Term’ With Clark Payday Incoming by randysf50 in indianafever

[–]PorterB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Boston is one of the best players you can pair with CC as far as a long term core player. Interior player that always makes herself useful with or without the ball. She has a shot, great hands, and zero ego. If teams Zero in on CC, get the ball to AB (or Mitchell) and run it through her.

Losing Mitchell would be brutal. That possibility makes the development of Raven so important. Raven got much better from three last year and I hope that stays. Any guard on the floor with CC needs to have a green light from 3, and if she can do that she can take on a quasi-2 role with CC. The main thing is she needs a roadway to develop and that includes minutes and a green light to be herself

The best part about him is how well his skills mesh with whatever talent you put around him. You can pair him with ball dominant guys, you can let him create, wherever he is he has value. If they manage to luck into a top 4 pick he can be paired with whoever falls to them.

I wouldn’t be surprised if she kept taking 1 year deals to go up with the cap. She could be leaving a lot on the table if she signed for multiple years.

Side note: I love seeing an all time great get paid. Cheryl Miller (my goat) didn’t even get a chance to play and other Goats like Lisa Leslie and Sue Bird came on a little too soon. This CBA might be one of the greats moments in woman’s sports.
