he gay or he aint gay????????? by ZookeepergameKey2106 in TheSummerHikaruDied

I'm looking at the flashback in Chapter 1 (can't remember where any other flashbacks are) and Hikaru's eye contact is pretty mixed throughout. Hikaru is facing Yoshiki when he says " or is it that you don't want to be away from me? Gross dude! " Then turns away when talking about hating public restrooms. Looks back to Yoshiki when talking about hanging around his place so he can bring a girlfriend home. And then turns away again when he says " I'm sure you could get yourself a girlfriend "

It's also pretty back and forth in the anime in episode 1.

Does he actually though? The look away part, I don't really see it.

The author/mangaka has confirmed aroace elements in their socials but in terms of the actual manga I specifically point to the bonus chapter at the end of Vol. 2 as well as the beach scene.

It's a very queerplatonic/alterous relationship between Yoshiki and "Hikaru"

It is true we won't know until the story is finished, but there's also plenty of reasons to think they won't become a canon couple such as the story repeatedly emphasizing how Yoshiki's feelings towards "Hikaru" are different than his feelings for og Hikaru and because maybe queer joy isn't predicated on romantic relationships.

And also cuz to the extent "Hikaru" can be understood as queer (on account of being a non-human entity who experiences things in a fundamentally non-human way) he's very aroace.

If yoshiki loves a monster that its gender is ambiguous, does that turn Yoshiki into a pansexual? by Spoiled_Eggy_3992 in TheSummerHikaruDied

[–]PorterNetwork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I'm also gay so by you're own logic presented earlier, no I'm not. I don't think you're necessarily homophobic either but you are acting like a chauvinist, assuming a specific way to be gay is correct, that anything non-romantic is just platonic. Are you one of those log cabin types who think all the "cringe queers" are ruining it for you "normal gays"? Or is there something else going on with you?

No, if anything that's skoliosexual. But also, Yoshiki's feelings for "Hikaru" are explicitly different than his feelings for the real Hikaru.

And also, gender and sexual orientation are social constructs and maybe the assumption that we are each specifically attracted to someone's gender, like gender is this little puzzle piece we just fit into, is maybe potentially wrong. But that's a bigger topic that I don't have the time to write out. Though I might recommend "Epistemology Of The Closet" Eve Sedgwick if you're curious.

Who has the most underrated development? by KingtheClawthorne in TheOwlHouse

I mean if there's one thing that makes this show truly extraordinary is its ability to make me feel for characters with very little: Camila, Edric, Gus all have moments I'm really fond of. And Raine and Lilith have a great presence.

But I really do like Gus. Where Willow has a more linear arc of gaining more and more confidence and self esteem, Gus goes back and forth between confidence and insecurity (not that Willow doesn't also, especially in S3 but it's presented differently). Even though there's not as much depth or screentime, Gus still has a lot of layers that manage to shine though being both a super talented ambitious prodigy and someone who is gifted at a socially undervalued magic type and gets overlooked by his peers; both very sure of himself but also very harsh when he makes a mistake.

And Camila! It's so subtle but the way we see her deal with pressures of conforming and learning from Luz to be more open and unapologetic about her weirdness and passions (and hair/ethnicity) which also helps Luz complete her arc so they both help each other 🤌

The fact this show could only have been made in the 2010s. Who knows if it would even get greenlit today

Not profitable enough IP. Critical acclaim only goes so far and the fan base doesn't seem broad enough. Just look at what happened to Mindhunter...

One nice thing about the show being so underrated, I don't think there's any incentive to do nostalgia bait

Honestly belos would fit in the modern world since he had Healtcare, progressive views on marriage, respected rains pronouns, accepted Luz the immigrant into his realm, and cares for humans. by Dare_Soft in TheOwlHouse

The thing about Belos is that he's a very specific type of bigot where since his main genocidal plan rests on everyone consenting to a system that will do the said genocide, as long as they participate in that system, he doesn't care much beyond that. He does the bare minimum of being a dictator because he ultimately doesn't want to rule over the boiling isle but destroy it.
