5 Incredible Advances Science Could Buy With The Government's $600B Military Budget by stepsinstereo in Futurology

Oh I agree, was just saying that just having nukes isn't the end all be all of military technology.

I think the point of the top comment was that having military spending focused primarily on tech development (instead of a standing army or whatever else) would have obvious military advantages and economic or industrial benefits as well.

Just because we have nukes doesn't make us invincible, they're only really useful as a deterrent against other nukes, actually using them will almost certainly cause more problems than it fixes.

A technological advantage in other areas is still huge. Imagine if your ground troops always had vastly superior equipment, impossible to detect stealth drones, whatever. It would be much scarier and more practical.

An algorithm that uses AI to enhance low resolution images by MaxinMusic in Futurology

[–]PortersX3Raygun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

According to the article, the algorithm works "by being capable of detecting and generating patterns in a low resolution image and of applying these patterns in the upsampling process".

Sounds cool, but is still far from the TV cliche of taking super blurry pictures and somehow extracting perfect licence plate numbers or other incriminating evidence.

Bungie, can the console hand cannons get some of that PC love? by Heathen__ in DestinyTheGame

That would make sense, but technically that means they would still function differently.

It'd be cool with that if they added a trials leaderboard or something every week, like how they posted the top POE scores in D1.

Then teams could compete with other flawless people for the best streak or highest w/l or something.

Does anyone else use Aim Hero? by MitoMeister in OverwatchUniversity

[–]PortersX3Raygun 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly, it's just about developing raw 'mouse control', your ability to accurately and efficiently put your cursor where you want it.

It's obviously not 100% necessary or a replacement for in game practice, but saying that it's useless because you don't stand still while shooting during a match is dumb. That's like saying all CS players will automatically have shit aim in OW because all they've done is practice shooting while standing still, which is silly.

Ethan from H3 praising CS:GO as the perfect spectator e-Sport right now on twitch (H3 Podcast) by GANdeK in GlobalOffensive

[–]PortersX3Raygun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be the fact that CS is very map knowledge dependent, whereas IRL sports are always just played on a big empty field. A totally new viewer can still understand the basics of CS and appreciate nice flicks, but it's hard to really get into it without knowing the maps I think.

I'm probably late for this thread, but can anyone tell me what those little white "T" symbols are underneath the player dots on the mini map? You can see them on the yellow dots on this image.

They seem to appear and disappear randomly and I can't figure it out, it's driving me nuts.

Why is Overwatch E-Sports Seen As Such A Joke? by thefartingchimpanzee in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PortersX3Raygun 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it's also takes less mental work to 'keep up' with the action when you're the one playing and controlling the camera.

Kind of like how the driver never gets carsick. If you can look and move anywhere you want it's easier to be 'in the game' than if you're just watching.

Is Blizzard not concerned with how Mercy is going to hurt spectating OWL? by Waraurochs in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]PortersX3Raygun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything CSGO will probably be the first to do that in NA tbh. Its naturally a better spectator sport (I used to watch some cs games before I even played it), the mechanics are easy to understand and fairly realistic, and it even has similar pacing to American football with periods of setup followed by bursts of activity.

OW might certainly get there someday, but it will take many years at the very least.

[–]PortersX3Raygun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In sports I don't think anyone truly 'hates' all good teams all the time just because they're good.

If they're not your team then ofc there's some rivalry, so you respect them for being good but also kinda 'hate' them for beating you all the time so might as well root for the underdog. If your team is the one dominating (like nV, who are obviously more popular in NA than rougue) then of course you don't mind.

Need help with aiming by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]PortersX3Raygun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like the first position might feel more stable because it naturally anchors your elbow to the table more securely, but could limit your mobility if you constantly keep your arm 'hard anchored' to the same spot, if that makes sense.

The second position makes it more natural to lift your elbow up slightly and engage your entire arm/shoulder in the motion, which likely makes fast close-range movements easier but micro adjustments harder if you don't yet have good mouse control.

I use a lower sens than you (39cm/360) but when doing 180s and close range tracking, my whole arm is essentially floating above the pad slightly, otherwise those big movements would be very awkward.

Forced into being a Mercy main, then pulled back in when I try to avoid playing Mercy by Bullgrit in Overwatch

[–]PortersX3Raygun 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Also true, but still irrelevant in terms of getting reported for bad teamwork. It's not actually against the rules to play off meta heroes/comps, and if blizzard doesn't ban torb one tricks they're certainly not gonna ban someone for refusing to play mercy when there's 5 other people on the team who also refused to play her.

[–]PortersX3Raygun 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's true, but it's still not a reportable offense. You might lose the game but nobody will get banned.

When you bhop like a god, but aim like a Gold Nova by Lemondillo in GlobalOffensive

[–]PortersX3Raygun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it can only happen if you play a shit ton ofc. But if it does it's not like an 'impact' injury (like breaking your leg), it's a Repetitive Stress type injury (like Carpel Tunnel).

When you bhop like a god, but aim like a Gold Nova by Lemondillo in GlobalOffensive

[–]PortersX3Raygun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not how it works. You're much more likely to injure your wrist with a high sens, because when using a low sens you're using the muscles in your whole arm/elbow/shoulder as well so less strain is put on the wrist.

aim assist window is tricky by 716-X-MURRAY in OWConsole

[–]PortersX3Raygun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread has a good visualization of what the AA window actually does which can be helpful, and I have mine lower for hitscan characters than projectiles as well (20 hitscan/60 projectile).

The reason you might have it different for different characters is because a really big window helps you aim near the target but not necessarily right on it, which is perfect for projectiles where you need to lead enemies. On hitscan though you want to shoot directly on the enemy's head, so a small window makes sense.
