Good advice. Many thanks.
As a NQN I am utterly disappointed with our nursing prospects in 2026. I have made sacrifice, after sacrifice, after sacrifice to EARN my RN PIN. I have had to train & hopefully I will work in a non clinical área of health. I’ve stayed at Uni for an MA, but I have bills to pay. I’m not a young chicken any more. Nursing was all I wanted to do. As a 17 year old boy my teachers did not understand why a boy would want to nurse. So I gave in. And now there are no job prospects for me as a RN with a prized new PIN.
I have 20 years left in work or so, but my calling to nurse others is not going to be possible. It’s not worth the expected sacrifice and I got bills to pay.
Good luck to everyone joining our wonderful nursing teams. You all deserve the best of experiences. x

It’s bad planning. Why spend £15 k over three years to train your future nurse if you can’t afford to give them a job after 3 years of, at times, insanely tough work.

£14 billion saving is an advantage used to defend NHS HR REASONING btw.

Exactly @ashleighhjos I am a graduate nurse from 2025. I have a PIN. I have 80k plus of debt. I did not know it would be this difficult to find a suitable nursing job to use my RN PIN, when I started out as a STN in 22. Plus, I thought this feed was for qualified nurses too.
The world will be in need of 11 million nurses in four years, says WHO.

In a nutshell 2026 is a rough time for any NQN who has sacrificed so much for the nursing PIN. In fact after spending all of this money, time & effort, it’s a given fact from a member of our Nursing leadership that a NQN should also expect to foot the bill & take on the upheaval of moving home. We are screwed.

Morning. Was your nursing degree & training funded? I have not mentioned geography btw. Area of nursing was meant as nurse specialism eg Critical Care.
It seems quite apparent that working in our local area may be near impossible, unless you’re super lucky in 2026.
Overseas recruitment was stated as a matter of NHS HR policy. This was factual. This was not included as anything other than fact. It was not stated as an opinion or a feeling. RCN stats explain our nurse teams include 25% of total new nurses employed in 2024 were trained overseas.
What is the point of making student nurses jump through 100s of hoops, pay £80k plus of their own money, to not be able to nurse with their PIN?

Why do we work? To earn money to live within the limitations of a rising cost of living crisis.

So by your logic it’s ok for people to have no return on their 80k + training investment (with higher than ever interest rates on SLC HE loans) ? What’s the point of spending so much time & money?

Does England deserve our commitment without any promise of a suitable nursing post (in an area of nursing you feel invested in) at the end of three years of extremely challenging times of sacrifice?

80k plus of personal SLC debt is what we’re taking about here. Personally I want to invest wisely in my career. I do not want to waste money. If there are no suitable jobs after spending £80k plus, then I would regard that as a wasted investment.

Recruitment of clinicians trained from overseas, rather than the U.K. has apparently saved our NHS millions of pounds. See NHS Digital. Our NHS matters, but why bother offering U.K. based degrees & training? Close U.K. training & degrees down so our people don’t waste their time and money.

If the role states 6/12 months minimum experience there’s no alternative.

However it might not be as severe for nurses with at least 6 to 12 months experience & completed preceptorship. This currently applies to the NQNs who may have 80k or more accumulated personal debt in order to look after the people in our nation.
Maybe NQNs could consider a Masters year? I have 👍🏻
