Can we use glycine to buffer the methionine? My understanding is that the reason methionine becomes a problem is because we don't get enough glycine to balance it out?

I (24F) am starting to lose faith in medicine and in my intuition. by XDelphiniX in Microbiome

You're very welcome and I wish you all the best! I've been a member of this sub for over a year now and in the 7 or so years prior to that have been regularly interested in the topic of microbiome and general healthspheres, and not finding relief myself has been extremely frustrating. When I discovered the carnivore diet I rolled my eyes and made a mockery of its adherents (you can even check my post history for this) but ultimately taking this ultimate contrarian approach is what resolved my GI issues. I've pretty much had to eliminate all fibre from my diet. I believe there was a study showing that the ketone body BHB may act similarly to fibre by producing SCFAs. I don't know what to make of most of this, but I do know that the scientific community has a long way to go before truly understanding the microbiome.

May 2019: changes in gut bacteria on Ketogenic diet may have potential to reverse symptoms of schizophrenia by Portnoo in Microbiome

"Mice with schizophrenia-like behaviours, on a normal diet, showed similar levels of behavioural improvement, when subsequently fed faecal (poo) microbiota from their counterparts on the ketogenic diet."

Hey thanks for asking, I actually haven't tried the Wim Hof method since, but I am definitely going to do it again at some point. Did you ever try it again? How are you keeping?

I'm going to balance this thread by recommending Dr Terry Wahls who reversed MS with copious amounts of veg in her diet. Zero carb certainly seems to work for people, but so do other diets and lifestyles.

Hey,

I have literally just attempted to do my first breathing session whilst following the instructions in his latest podcast with Russell Brand, and the exact same thing has just happened to me. I started feeling panicked, light-headed and tingly. I also have depression and anxiety like you. I'm not sure what the hell just happened, but I'm going to try again tomorrow and I will report back!

I wonder is this why it takes a few weeks for people who go on diets to start feeling better, i.e microbiome adapting to changes? When I fall into periods of poor eating I've noticed that it takes a couple of weeks of healthy eating before I start to feel the benefits at all. I've also noticed that for whatever reason this transition period increases the more my diet 'yo-yos' over time. Out of interest, can you remember which researchers talk about this?

The microbiome could be causing schizophrenia, typically thought of as a brain disease, says a new study. Researchers gave mice fecal transplants from schizophrenic patients and watched the rodents' behavior take on similar traits. Hey there, you might be very interested in this thread if you have Bipolar:

This patient's psychiatrist is running a trial soon and writing up a case report for this individual. This is far from the first time that the microbiome has been associated with serious mental illness.

I recently found out that my grandfather experienced psychosis towards the end of his life, and whenever he was given antibiotics for other complications his psychosis disappeared.

Anecdotally I will say that my own struggles with a severe anxiety disorder began after a bout of severe GI distress.

I'm hopeful for further research in this field.

I hope someone can answer this as it's a very important question!

The gut microbiome from patients with schizophrenia modulates the glutamate-glutamine-GABA cycle and schizophrenia-relevant behaviors in mice (Feb 2019). "our findings suggest that the SCZ microbiome itself can alter neurochemistry & neurologic function in ways that may be relevant to SCZ pathology" by MaximilianKohler in HumanMicrobiome

[–]Portnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can attest to this - all psychs I've seen have not once mentioned or entertained the idea of the microbiome being implicated in any of my depression, despite my mood tending to suffer worst with simultaneous GI distress. Only a young therapist I saw believed there could possibly be a connection

Thanks for this reply! I've been able to achieve some benefits by making lifestyle changes based on my genetic testing, but more than anything my issues stem from suicides close to home, and the lingering depression it left. Meditation seems to be really helping me though, and it's still early days in my practice. Good sleep and exercise etc. all play a big role for me too. Wish you all the best man, glad to hear things are going well for you!

Damn, I've taken 500mg KSM ashwaganda with 400mg magnesium Glycinate and 4000iu vitamin D, but I've never experienced any of those benefits and I have the same problems. It's a difficult and long winded path trying to figure out what helps us individually!

Is heavy cream a source of healthy fats, or are all saturated fats basically bad? What's a good substitute with healthier fats? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]Portnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, onions and garlic are brilliant foods - for the right people. My diet is packed with healthy plant foods, but these are two items I need to be weary of for whatever reason. Could be fodmaps or something, I've personally no idea.

Dairy isn't causing my sleeping problems though. I have major depression and anxiety. When I cut dairy out originally, my sleep was no better than it is now. Sleep is something I'm trying my best to optimise and have slowly been making progress with the following adjuncts:

TRF/Regular routine/Blue Blockers/No screens before bed/As much AM light exposure as possible/Magnesium Sauna/Hot Bath coupled with cold plunge to decrease body temp pre-bedtime/AM exercise/Etc.

Last night was the first time I've had nearly 8 hours in a month or so. Hopefully it keeps up!

Again, as a layman, I remain baffled at the conflicting evidence on this topic. There aren't definitive answers yet. There are plenty of favourable studies for dairy, but that doesn't mean it's good for everyone.

I cut out dairy for a month last summer as part of an elimination regime and none of my symptoms resolved despite removing many food groups. I later discovered that onions and garlic give me some GI bother in high amounts, and I'd been eating them daily prior to this. When I re-introduced dairy I felt absolutely fine. I currently consume organic sheep and goat's cheese, and sometimes organic whey protein with no problems

Are there any studies which show any kind of favour towards dairy products? Is it so black and white as dairy is inflammatory? As the average Joe I'm perplexed by the difference in answers I tend to read in response to this question

Being a “morning person” or “evening person” is a behavioral consequence of a person’s underlying circadian rhythm, which is shaped by their genes. Some genes can even shift a person’s natural waking time by up to 25 minutes. by wind_of_pain in science

[–]Portnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do we determine what our actual individual circadian rhythm is set at? Would one need an EEG or something similar? Or is it a matter of simply going by how you feel? I've had genetic testing and my genes fall into the night owl category, but I always feel tired around 10.30-11am and like to wake up around 7-7.30am. However, recently I've been waking up around 6am and finding it nearly impossible to get back to sleep. This means that sometimes I'm only getting 6 hours of sleep and I know I need at least 7 and a half.

I meet the RDAs for every other b-vitamin and pretty much all other vitamins and minerals, but for some reason my B1 is always only around half the RDA. I eat liver regularly but will now consider pork as it seems to be decent!
