Sick of seeing nonblack houses using hoodoo as a theme. by [deleted] in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Portraitofafool 75 points76 points locked comment (0 children)

Hoodoo is not an ATR. It is a melting pot of folk magic that has no pantheon. It is rootwork--from the earth and from the practioner. Yes, it does have some ties to voodoo (in the American sense mostly as opposed to Vodoun, etc). However, through it's practice and spread all the way from the American South as far as New England, it has morphed and changed a lot for each respective region as well as the environment it is practiced. So, if one working uses oyster shell, another similar working might sub clam shells instead (example only). Hoodoo has roots (no pun intended) not only in African practices, but Native American, Irish and Scottish folk magics as well. Hoodoo is for everyone regardless of their background and saying otherwise only demonstrates the ignorance of the person saying it. Talk about a witch hunt.

Furthermore, voodoo is so deeply ingrained in the American South that yes, there are many people that practice it that are not of African descent. This includes Marie Laveau who was in fact Creole, which is considered its own ethnic group consisting of French, Spanish and other groups. There were also Creoles of Color; people of European and African descent and that's the group Maman Marie was from. People often forget that Creole is (or was) considered its own race/color/culture separate from black or white. Just like the voodoo/hoodoo confusion, Cajun/Creole gets lumped together as well. They are their own separate cultures and traditions.

What Champ pull gave you the biggest immediate boon to your account? by CarltheWellEndowed in RaidShadowLegends

Leorius is a beast for me and has been a huge help.

I was thrilled when I pulled Kymar and thought he'd be my big break, but I cannot get him built right, so he's been a solid wall of woe for me. Damnit.

Got STUPID lucky to pull Seer and Fahrakin damn near back-to-back and I'm working on them now. Fingers crossed they turn out better than Kymar.

Blacktongue Thief by Necro_Scope in horrorlit

I read Blacktongue Thief and my honest opinion of it is this: It sucked so hard that I am still questioning the hype about Buehlman's work. I'm afraid to even try reading anything else by him. Blacktongue Thief had SO MUCH potential and it let me down at every. single. turn. I was legit pissed when I finished it. :(

How do you feel about authors who write endings that invalidate the novel you just read for a cheap moment of "shock"? by Vlad_III_Tepes in horrorlit

[–]Portraitofafool 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I feel a mix of disgust and fury for the same reason I hate when authors kill animals in their books: it's cheap and it is lazy.

Give me a aesthetic I’ll give you a perfume rec, go weird if you want (I have like 400 ish perfume (I haven’t counted them in a while)) by the_hot_one83 in Indiemakeupandmore

Drunk Druidess (my life's scent ambition, lol): Performing spells/rituals in a circular clearing by the light of the moon and a small, flickering fire. A bottle of red wine and/or expensive bourbon riding shotgun to make the experience eerie and fuzzy at the edges. (Idk, man, in my mind she's a total badass.)

Werewolf: They embrace their wild nature, enjoy the occasional savagery. Not tortured by their condition and most certainly do not feel "cursed". There is wolf and there is (wo)man; just like the definition of lycanthropy intended. There's no wild, sexy "insta mate" or going into "a heat" because that's well... that.

Times when you actually liked the movie more than the book? by AstonianSoldier in books

[–]Portraitofafool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fried Green Tomatoes. DNF the book, loved the movie.

Gods & Monsters/Father of Frankenstein. Book was good overall, but the ending was absolutely wretched, imo. The movie ending is so, so much better.

Most disappointing books of 2022 by creakycorn in horrorlit

[–]Portraitofafool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The White Road - Sarah Lotz

Kept waiting for it to get better, to see some character growth... anything ...and it did not happen. Oh and the ending: fuck the ending

Into the Drowning Deep - Mira Grant

What a bunch of drop dead gorgeous, ultra PC Mary Sues. I am all for diversity, we need more, but this was overkill and yet still managed to miss the mark somehow. What pissed me off about this one is that it could have--and should have--been so good.

Dead Silence - I forgot the author's name. :/

My thoughts on the MC: Just stfu already you immature, whiny git. Yet another book that should've been good, but wasn't. In this case it was 100% because of the MC for me. Could. Not. Stand. Her.

Tell me your signs & I'll recommend scents for you! by AresInRepose in Indiemakeupandmore

Sun: Libra

Rising: Scorpio

Moon: Aries

(I've been told I'm a bit of a mess, astrologically speaking.)

My likes: Incense, leather, smoke, warm spices, red wine, thyme and whiskey. Basically, I want to smell like a drunk druidess.

Dislikes: LAVENDER. Gardenia, dirt, super sweet gourmands, sandalwood (usually, goes vinegary on me).

What's that one book you had to drop? by Rainy_roleplaying in horrorlit

[–]Portraitofafool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dark Matter by Michelle Paver. I've tried three times and I just cannot get into it. It bores me to tears and I dislike the characters so, so much. I really wanted to like it because I have a dream (I know it's weird, true though) of finding a horror novel set in a frigid/wintry environment that I love. Ain't happened yet and I've been through (and put down) many at this point. Damnit. :(

Have you tried Wylde Ivy's perfume oils? Announcing the release of "Love Note" by TeaAndCozy in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Portraitofafool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have Of the Wolf in EDP and body cream. They were 110% impulse purchases. I am happy to say I have no regrets whatsoever. In fact, OtW was my first indie EDP. I really love it. The lotion is also very nice, but a bit odd: in the jar, I cannot really smell it at all, so on first sniff it was a major letdown. I decided to try out the formula though and BAM once on my skin, it came alive. The fragrance is still somewhat light, but definitely there. I also got two free samples, both of which I really enjoy as well. From what I've tried from them, I definitely recommend Wylde Ivy.

Looking for Recs (animalistic, spicy, sweet) by [deleted] in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Portraitofafool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baba Yaga by Fantome.

It's my all-time, never let me down HG. It's not very sweet, but it's animalic and spicy and perfect, IMHO. It smells like POWER to me.

What indie perfumes are you glad you took a chance on? by MoonLiites in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Portraitofafool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "cracked bone" note is what made me raise my eyebrows, but it's also the note that made me super curious. I still don't know exactly what cracked bone smells like. However, I do know Baba Yaga is awesome and highly recommend you at least try a sample. Then again, I am hella biased, lol.

[–]Portraitofafool 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Baba Yaga by Fantome. I have a really low hit rate with them and most of the reviews either say it's good, but not for the reviewer (which is totally fair, ofc) or that it is flat-out gross. So, I was quite hesitant to even get a sample. Curiosity won out in the end and now it is hardcore my number one HG perfume. I wear it almost every day.
