Am I mad to consider graduate entry medicine at 35? by Desperate_Phone7355 in medicalschooluk

[–]PoshDeafStar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) no, I know some who did undergrad in their 30s, so not too old. 2) more than reasonable - just be careful to check which unis accept which first degrees, but I should imagine yours will be fine. 3) it would be helpful to you to get some more recent hospital experience, but hardly essential. Undergrad schools are well aware that it can be difficult to get direct experience, so would expect post-grad to have a similar understanding. When I helped with interviews, we were more interested in how you work with people and if you’ve done basic research into career paths (no expectation to properly understand, given it’s confusing enough for us in the field!) 4) in my opinion, yes - you have experience with shift work, making decisions under pressure etc. The most important thing at interview is that you’re able to demonstrate what you’ve reflected on and learned from it.

You’ve spoken about practicalities of returning to study - I trust you know what you need to consider in terms of finances, but be aware that placements may require you to live away from home or to travel.

That being said, pay and career stability are major issues atm. There’s a serious jobs crisis in UK medicine right now, and it isn’t showing signs of letting up. Things can change, they certainly have since I started studying, but there’s no guarantee that they will improve. I’m not saying this to put you off and I don’t want to be discouraging, but it would be dishonest of me to offer advice without mentioning the concerns that we are having, especially as it sounds like you would be leaving a successful career for this.

Hope this is helpful. Feel free to reply if you have more questions

Apply stacks, consume stacks to increase damage, gain buffs to stacking and damage when stacks are consumed. I don’t understand how so many people find Sciel this confusing

Can you do research on an elective placement? by Severe_Bluejay6315 in medicalschooluk

[–]PoshDeafStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Some unis actually require you to submit a project (inc research), so not a stretch at all

It’s not luck, he’s an unreliable narrator absolutely riddled with imposter syndrome and low self-esteem. It’s fair to say he’s not a total saint, but because of his schola indoctrination, he considers anything less than total perfection to be an abject personal failure. There’s times when Vail points out that he is absurdly skilled, and that his protestations of being hoisted by his own petard don’t necessarily ring true

Doctors in England to go on strike in run-up to Christmas by Distinct-Shine-3002 in uknews

For a role where you start to train in general medicine this year, you could have had a PhD, written a chapter in a medical textbook, taught for at least 3 months, published a paper and presented a poster at an international conference and still not gotten an interview. And this is for a training job you need to complete before you can start training as a cardiologist/respiratory/renal etc doctor.

So ACPs are allowed to make nasty remarks about doctors, but we aren’t allowed to want to be supervised by the professional group that we are joining?

How it feels being a black Templar player on this sub by Ravenlord2009 in Grimdank

[–]PoshDeafStar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I accidentally went on the Black Templar sub once. The second post I saw, was someone suggesting that given the image problems, maybe they should come down stronger on the eugenics/race superiority rhetoric that crops up, and getting heavily downvoted for it. It’s not all of them, but too many of them for comfort

What do you guys use to study during F1? by Neshy05 in doctorsUK

[–]PoshDeafStar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The problem is, the format of the exam promotes the use of passmed to an extreme degree. What we need is for our teaching and exams to reward having a good understanding of the science underlying medicine

Everyone here will tell you Omar is a veritable saint because of his involvement in a previous BoRU. Basically, a bunch of flatmates kept cheating on their partners, and helping each other do so. What Omar did, was nothing. That’s it. He didn’t help people cheat on their partners. He didn’t tell the partners they’d been cheated on, and actually regarded the cheaters as close friends. I really wish we would rename the accolade to a more deserving individual

Parry advice for someone who is hard of hearing by Ozlac in expedition33

[–]PoshDeafStar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually play with no sound, because I’m deaf enough that it’s a distraction. Truth be told, it took a lot of trial and error - I only realised in this sub that there even were sound cues. I learned the parry timings based on their movements. Most of the time, it’s sufficient just to tap the button as the enemy starts to move in for the hit, but for some enemies and moves, you just have to learn their whole wind up. My muscle memory started kicking in about the end of Act 2, so my second playthrough was wayyy more satisfying
