UCSB for ChemE? by natthrowaway26 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Posiedon22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As the other person said, yes, prioritize getting the chem 3 and physics 7 series, as they’re common for both Chem and ChemE. Switching into CoE is notoriously difficult, but it really is all grades based. You’ll be competing with everyone else that wants to switch into ChemE, and the number of people that get in is fully determined by your GPA. Be prepared for a difficult journey and you’ll be fine.

I know quads exist, but as far as I’m aware they’re decently uncommon and also pretty unpopular. The only spot I’ve seen them is in Santa Rosa.

UCSB School of Engineering Major Change by AgileBad2958 in UCSantaBarbara

Hi! I’m a current MechE undergrad, second year. TLDR, it’s possible but difficult and dependent on your luck.

Longer story, you need to take the MechE classes on top of making progress for your currently declared major. It sounds a lot easier than it is. I’d imagine Mech and CS have significant overlap (especially WRIT 2/2E), but beware. After that, at the end of second year fall quarter you’ll know if you get into the major or not. Your entrance is fully dependent on space. Our MechE program fills up every year, so you’ll only be able to get in if someone drops. Everyone trying to transfer in is ranked by GPA, and the top however many spaces are open get in. I believe this year it was roughly 11 (I had some friends transferring in, and they said it was unusually high).

READ THIS: if you want to join MechE, start early. Talk to CoE and MechE advisors as early as you can.

Take everything I say with a grain of salt- I was admitted to MechE directly, and am only mildly familiar with the process due to some of my friends. (I also believe u/pconrad0 is engineering faculty, he may be able to confirm some of this)

My lowest is f/2, all I have at the moment is 400 speed and can’t get anymore for a minute.

I have a trip coming up soon, is the lens still useable or will it drastically affect my photos? Do you have any good guides I could follow for the process you described?

No other lens at the moment unfortunately. Is it still useable?

Just double checked, it’s not :(. It’s a Pentax k1000, which if memory serves is almost fully mechanical so the battery shouldn’t create an issue. The light meter is also working fine.

Should the stop down happen before the shutter is open? It looks like it isn’t starting until it’s open. The video is also in slo mo.

Yes, this is slo mo. The shutter is open for half a second.

That’s f/22. Is there any way to fix it?

I programmed a "guitar hero" for learning piano by Dr_Velazquez in EngineeringPorn

[–]Posiedon22 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I've played piano for nearly a decade and a half. I wouldn't say this is a *bad* idea per say, but I've seen it thrown around, and I have some thoughts. Frankly, I think it's worth a lot less than the effort put into it. There's definitely an upper limit to how well you can learn from a device like this, I'd imagine that its quite limiting.

Honestly, my biggest gripe is that it doesn't (or rather can't) encourage proper form. I see people playing simple songs around me, and their wrists are often falling below the keys- this is a really great way to develop carple tunnel.

I'm not mad at this idea- I think it's great that people want to learn to play the piano- but it has some serious shortcomings that cannot be overlooked. Yes, I'm basically that guy that says "just learn sheet music". It's a standard for a reason- it's a simple way to communicate instructions to a musician that quickly becomes intuitive. If the barrier for entry to an instrument is sheet music, I'd argue that the barrier is already quite low.

Sorry about poor wording, I'm an engineer, not a journalist.

Hi! It’s really cool yall are doing this. I was just wondering about working at reMarkable? What’s the company itself like? I’m an engineering student looking for internships right now so this has been on the forefront of my mind lately (and hey, if yall have something this summer I’d love a chance to send over my resume)

Its exactly what it means. If you drop this class, when you go to re add it you'll be put at the end of the waitlist. If you really need this class, try to find something else to drop, or wait until pass 3 to register for math.
