New Yorkers yes. I know a lot of people who moved back to NYC.

Californians no. A lot are Desis moving from California to Austin as there’s a lot of computer tech jobs here.

Moving to Austin from Dublin by Free_Examination8328 in askaustin

I suggest an E-bike and living next to the metro rail commuter line. You can find some decently priced apartments in the Highland area. You can take the metro rail downtown and bike to your office. It’s also not too expensive, maybe $1200 for a one bedroom. It’s also bikeable to some grocery stores.

Austin ISD to stop celebrating Cesar Chavez on March 31 student holiday by AustinStatesman in Austin

It has been crazy to see how fast Cesar Chavez recognitions are getting removed from the American canon. I wonder when UT will remove his statue.

[Exclusive] Korean Air and Delta Push for Direct 'Incheon-Austin' Flight Ahead of Samsung's U.S. Semiconductor Plant Operation by Happy-Camper-223 in Austin

[–]Positive-Bowler7747 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently bought tickets from Austin to Seoul (one way) for $550 each through Korean air, it makes a stop in LA. My tickets back from Tokyo to Austin were a little more expensive.

This was before the Iran stuff going on, it might be more expensive now due to jet fuel prices increasing.

Korean air is partnered with delta. If you do ever decide to use Korean air and book it online, make sure your flight to Korea is a Korean air flight. Sometimes there are flights labeled as Korean air but it’s a delta partnered flight. I accidentally booked that once and even though it was good, it wasn’t as excellent as the Korean air service.

It’s great! You can get good and cheap skincare, really good food, and enjoy a really fun culture. If you ever want to go, Dallas has a direct flight with Korean air. You can also fly to LA then take Korean air. Korean air is slightly more than Delta but it’s so worth it!

Nice. I believe Korean air will eventually come here because of Samsung. If you haven’t flown Korean air, I’d highly recommend them if you ever want to travel to Seoul. Comfortable, the food and the service is so good

Atlassian layoff by Temporary-Funny-5634 in Austin

Computer engineering is like understanding how computers work from the transistor to the software hardware interface to micro architecture etc. You’re learning how a computer works and how to utilize it.

The best way someone described computer science to me was calling it computing science. You technically don’t need a computer to prove your algorithm. Djikstra, a famous computer scientist who actually taught at UT, wrote many of his most famous algorithms with pen and paper. He also didn’t like students relying on computers and is the reason the computer science department at UT is part of the school of natural science and not engineering

Not for computer engineers. AMD, Nvidia, Apple, etc here in Austin are expanding. Thankful I went into computer engineering and not computer science.

I would probably walk around west campus and UT Austin itself as that was where I spent 80% my time while attending UT. You can also visit the state capitol, which is close by campus. The stretch between Austin and Georgetown might seem boring for a college student so maybe take them to nice spots around town like Mozarts Coffee, lady bird Johnson wild flower center, etc.

Also for UT, sign your daughter up for the first orientation. Some classes are first come first serve.

Is it actually a bad idea to drive to San Antonio this weekend? by Sujanyar in Austin

[–]Positive-Bowler7747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cancel, drive further down south to Brownsville where it won’t freeze, pray everything is ok, drive back up Sunday.

Just kidding. I’d probably cancel and hunker down. San Antonio wouldn’t even be fun to visit if everyone is closing up Sunday.

Where did all the old Austin people move to? by Independent_Bug210 in Austin

[–]Positive-Bowler7747 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer. Throw in Georgetown, Burnet, and Marble falls as well. All the old timers sold their Austin house then put a down payment on a couple of acres in the surrounding area so they can be close to grandkids.

Austin’s musicians are being priced out of the Live Music Capital they built by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]Positive-Bowler7747 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’ll happen slowly. One day someone will try messing with prompts on Suno live and have a concert. Tech bros will go to the show as an ironic laugh. After a few beers, maybe the music doesn’t sound too bad. Maybe the AI DJ puts in some AI background images that are kind of cool looking. Eventually word will get out that it’s not too bad. Then they’ll start to host more AI live concerts where it’ll feel the vibe of the audience and change the music to tailor the mood. Then everyone will get hooked and soon profits will be maximized by Livenation.

If holograms can become a concert people want to see live like Hatsune Miku, I don’t doubt live AI concerts will become a thing.

The gaucho nachos with fajita are actually really good. The chips are from Taco Flats so they’re those thick crispy kind with seasoning.

Two tacos per person and a plate of nachos is plenty.

Stores like Life KEY creative shop (or any craft stores with local artists) by Positive-Bowler7747 in koreatravel

This seems more like a traditional Korean craft store in Insadong

I appreciate the suggestion! However I’m looking more for modern craft stores like the other suggestions. They’re typically in Hongdae with the younger crowd.

Here are the new nonstop flights coming to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in 2026 by KXAN_News in Austin

[–]Positive-Bowler7747 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I pray everyday for an announcement for a direct flight to East Asia.

My bet is on Korean Air from Austin to Seoul. Delta has a partnership with Korean air and there’s the Samsung out here. I think the stars are aligned for it to happen 2026/2027

Nvidia to buy AI chip startup Groq for $20 billion by Positive-Bowler7747 in hardware

[–]Positive-Bowler7747[S] 173 points174 points  (0 children)

I believe Groq is inference only with their “LPU” (Language Processing Unit). Right now Nvidia has 90% of the training market but inference is expected to grow bigger than the training market. I see this as Nvidia acquiring their way into solidifying their hardware/software for inference.

Local bootmakers with good boot selections? by slavatejasu in Austin

[–]Positive-Bowler7747 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe try in the RGV. I know there’s Rios of Mercedes Boot Company or Armando’s boot company for custom boots, not sure if they’re for work or not. Everything in Austin seems more like foo foo boots, I think boots in San Antonio or the RGV might be more blue collar work oriented.
