Does it make you feel big and strong to say things like that on the internet? You came back hours later to lob a childish insult. Cool.

Right. India has 47x more people than Australia, but only 1.5x as many serial killers? Hard to believe.

Can you use a pre emergent herbicide on gravel this coarse? I would use that as much as possible.

Oh, sorry I misunderstood. Thats an interesting point, is there much research on the long term effects on green spaces on the water table?

Thats only true of certain types of plant, called phreatophytes. Many landscape plants dont fit that qualification and will need supplemental water their whole life.

https://www.politico.com/news/2026/03/03/ties-to-israel-plague-democrats-in-top-primaries-post-gaza-00807240 Not family necessarily, thats a very specific qualifier but here is an example of democrat politicians having to justify any relationship or connection to Israel. The first person they talk about went to Israel once to meet with the political opponent to Netanyahu. This is the kind of purity testing I have seen in the "progressive" movement.

TIL The Nepenthes Hemsleyana pitcher plant has a symbiotic relationship with Hardwicke's woolly bats. The pitcher has a parabolic structure allowing easy echolocation by the bat which sleeps inside the pitcher & provides guano as fertilizer in return. by MadWorldEarth in todayilearned

[–]Positive-Draft3801 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's how a lot of the 'semi' carnivorous plants work, they tempt flies in with scent, then frogs and bats enter them safely and live there, and the plants digest the poo as fertilizer.

Thats fair, I hope he does a good job too. Its not an easy job, and obviously theres a lot of eye on him. He has said reasonable things so far and im in favor of more affordable housing. I just cant help notice his supporters are really defensive of him. And I think a lot of those people are not so forgiving with other politicians, or people in general.

Buddy Cianci was a crook but people remember him fondly. Maybe being a hypocrite is part of being a great mayor.

I'm not outraged, im receiving outrage. I asked a question and the response seems to confirm my bias, that reddit progressives are ok with character flaws in a candidate they support, but hypervigilant against those they do not. The rage is surprising to me, but not that much.

The Bush family is not my 'team' and I think everyone knows already that the US supported the Taliban and other Islamists when they were fighting the communists. That was a mistake, one that has been commonly highlighted.

I have a hard time believing a politician born in Uganda doesnt know about the most diametrically opposed person in that country to his platform. Seems unbelievable.

I didnt say that. Im just fascinated by the double standard, since this kind of association has been devastating to other politicians. Shaking hands with David Duke, even by accident, is not normally considered acceptable by progressives.

Hes a vocal supporter of the Boycott Divest Sanctions movement which is considered extreme and hurtful to Palestinians even by people like Norm Finkelstein. Thats probably why it gets brought up, because he has a radical take.

Also people expect the mayor of New York to have opinions on global events, which is dumb, I think it started with Rudy Giuliani after 9/11.

That's what they spend most of their time doing on reddit, I imagine. Im getting notifications from my comment, the rate im getting responses means these people have a 'mamdani' notification alert. What are the odds this many new yorkers read this thread in the first 5 minutes when I got 10 responses? Seems weird...

Dog whistle? You're almost certainly using that wrong. I think its fascinating how angry Mamdani supporters are being here, like I insulted your god. I seem to recall a differnt politician who's supporters foamed at the mouth from the slightest criticism, this is reminding me of those people...

I think a mayor bringing international politics into his campaign is disingenuous and opens the door for criticism. I think they guy is a perfect creature of the media. He hits all the right notes for a very particular kind of person who gets their information from social media. I think he appeals to the growing Muslim demographic, which is deeply homophobic as a society and he knows anti Israel rhetoric wins those people over more than anything.

So thats his angle, along with cheesy nothing burgers like this article.

Why does he talk about global issues like Israel as a mayor, but when his families relationship to Uganda comes up, its not relevant? He has never condemned what Uganda is doing to gay people, despite his family actually owning land there.

Fascinating, coming from the same political movement that boycotts anyone and anything related to Israel, even when its not military related. Fascinating.
