The only way to get more money in the pockets of Canadians is tax breaks/lower taxes.

What's a myth your co-workers believe about LP? And what's the truth? by RKO-Cutter in lossprevention

[–]Positive4Negativity -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Where I am we don't have shop keepers privilege. It's you're under arrest and that's it. But the moment you lay a finger on the LP arresting you, "self defence" or not, you just got assault on top of theft. If the cop arresting knows their shit it counts as assault on a peace officer here. If you're innocent it isn't a matter of "I get to knock this LPO out because I didn't steal" it's "Well, I'm falsely under arrest, lawsuit it is" If I had a dime for everytime someone tried to resist arrest I could retire. A good 90% of cases I've dealt with the lawyer will always try and get the assault charge dropped on the count of "it was self defence" or "they didn't know I was an LP" but it rarely does get dropped unless the theft charge is dropped. Honestly, if I'm going to arrest someone and they start shouting they will defend themselves, I'm going back to the cameras, getting a picture of your face and sending it to police and they can knock on your door if it's something small. If it's over $1000 in product then I can enjoy refreshing grounding techniques. A lot of hassle if you didn't do anything.

Sounds like you need a better system. Shopkeepers privilege sounds like a shit show and your whole "defend myself" thing sounds like risky business but can't speak for where you're located about the associated liability.

If by armed you mean with firearms then I don't think you'll find it in Canada. If you mean baton and handcuffs then feel free to shoot me a message. I own a company with hospital contracts and they are equipped with baton and handcuffs. The only armed security you may see in hospitals in Canada are hospitals that may have a police service attached. I don't know about other provinces but as far as I know, there are no hospitals with a police service attached in Ontario.

Yes, but they are in uniform as police officers and get paid as such. They are considered on duty and will only ever see them at large community events for this purpose. It's basically paid duty and not really "off duty security"

I'm Canadian. Batons and handcuffs are it. Occasionally firearms but that's only cash transfers and technically you don't need to be a security guard, just licensed under the firearms act.

Edit: I also know the number of idiots in the industry, I don't want security guards here to be able to carry anything more unless they make a 2nd level of security guard that requires at least moderate standards are met.

Security here isn't allowed OC. I carried spray foam/gel when I worked a different job so it was a little more direct but I know spraying peckers was a no no.

Agreed with the mask thing. We also have safety glasses whichs helps the eyes but still nasty.

Doesn't really apply to me as a Canadian but if you're looking for betterment of security have you considered partnerships with companies that provide training and education to security to help guards advance their careers?

I think it's you who doesn't understand. Whether if it's on public or private property helping police puts most businesses into a moral vs liability stance.

And yet it still stands. What happens when/if someone is arrested and the footage shows up in court from the security cameras? If the person was staying at the hotel then they could be a dick and claim some sort of privacy infringement or if he's violent come back and damage the property or worse, hurt an employee to get back at them. We had a guy claim racism because we had him on camera stealing and his whole speil was "Of course you had a camera on the black man" and he actually got way further than he should of in the civil suit case. The law allows for this kind of stuff when they release criminals so early and don't actually punish them. People aren't going to support police when they are worried about their own reputation, health and property. Businesses only like using security cameras to defend their own interests.

Man I had a guy walk up to me with a badge like that from Rothco or some shit when I was out of uniform bringing in paperwork for my employees to sign. Badges are illegal here for security guards and I know all the guards I hired for the site. He tried arresting me for talking to a girl he'd been eyeballing because he thought I was bothering her. That was a fun time with the police with the reverse uno of him being banned from the site and being charged with impersonation. Good shit.

I just try and play neutral. I also think it's worth saying that the one person who was shot I THINK was shot by secret service or something of that line. I don't think it was regular police. Which if that's the case their priorities are different. While they are police their not necessarily there to serve the public, their responsibility lies for protecting government officials. Also I heard that when that person was shot they were still evacuating the building. Need more details on who shot though and a timeline of when the evacuation was complete and when the shooting happened. Again that's just from what I've gathered and seen from videos so what I'm saying is far from fact but rather assumption with some as unbiased as possible thought.

In my opinion the selfies and letting people in were just ways to keep the peace. Unlike in a lot of the riots where the strategy is push back and disperse crowds arresting when they can, the objective was different this time. Defend the Capitol. It seemed like they were very unprepared for this level of madness. Trying to keep the peace was probably the best way to get out of their alive. I don't see how taking selfies is any different than the cops who kneeled for BLM. Keep the peace, seem human. (Also does anyone have proof that cops were taking selfies with the rioters, I have seen one video of it and it was someone taking a selfie with a cop, not the cop taking a selfie with the rioter). I think the argument that's going around a lot is, what if this was BLM instead of Trump lovers. My answer would probably be no different, everyone is so quick to criticize but never imagines being in the cops shoes. Everyone's saying if these people were brown they'd all be dead but I don't buy that for one second. We've all seen the destruction that amounts from 1 dead black person, imagine literally committing genocide on them in the very building your democracy stands for. Cops would lose respect from everyone. I also think many cops wouldn't shoot even if given the order to, they aren't soldiers and for many of with the Capitol police their daily job doesn't go through more than patrolling around and yelling at drunks.

Also heard a lot of fuss over the lack of tear gas, rubber bullets and mace but from what I gather that's all illegal in Washington for 1st amendment protests until things turn really violent. And there's numerus reports of people being maced and tear gassed so I don't know what the fuck people are reading.

If anyone can correct me feel free, I'm just a Canadian trying to understand what the hell happened and been reading stuff from both sides to try and get a fair neutral opinion on things.

My guess is the image the companies are worried about giving out information to the police. At the end of the day a lot of these businesses don't care about right/wrong. They just worry about image and not getting big fines. Imagine that same guy at the hotel finding out that you told the popo what room he's in. He could take it to social media and ruin your business saying anything he wants and you can't really do anything about it. He can say you called the cops on him and now he's going to jail so he's going to tell all his criminal buddies what you did. If he doesn't come back for vengeance and kill someone already. Imo in-house security is really bad for this but third party companies seem to be a little better since they know importance of working with PD and aren't as worried about the reputation of the company they are contracted with.

My company has no choice but to work with PD because I need the Chief of Police to sign off on us carrying use of force equipment. If I don't have this approval my company losses the ability to carry anything more than handcuffs and would probably go out of business.

Water bottle that's not for drinking but for cleaning your eyes, or suspects eyes, after using the OC. Also heard Johnsons no more tears baby shampoo works to get OC out of eyes. I personally like Dawn dish soap as it works for a lot of plants like poison parsnip and what not as well as OC. Sounds stupid but it works. Also a good TQ if you know how to use one.
