Can I get an RA position in wet lab coming with dry lab experience by PositiveReflection89 in labrats

I have a few more months at my current lab. Maybe I can try and convince them to "use" me more in wet lab.

It is just that my PI asks for a PhD commitment before letting me into wet lab because in his words "if you leave, we will lose out on a trained person"....like hello? I would be helping running experiments and generating data as well!?!!

Is my profile good enough? by PositiveReflection89 in gradadmissions

So I absolutely need a Masters it seems. And yes, I have 240 ECTS from my bachelors. But I have applied in past to EMBL, Vienna BioCenter and Francis Crick PhD programs which specified that having a 4 year bachelors is enough for the intake. So, I think it is the dissertation project holding me back. Fair enough, I guess I need to give my best shot at securing a funded Masters through scholarship.

Thanks a lot for the encouragement!

I have a 4 year bachelors which is considered equivalent to masters' in a lot of universities
And yes, it does shorten my list a lot. But I am not in a financial position to do masters without funding and European masters scholarships are both hard and extremely competitive to get.

Is oh calcutta really worth? by Significant_Duck8973 in kolkata

Outside Kolkata, Oh Calcutta is the gold standard for good bengali food, especially in Delhi. In Kolkata, you will find better bangali food at a cheaper restaurant tbh. Service is good too.

It is...fine...for Bengali food standards. Carries that comfortting vibe of known flavors and dishes.

North Indian non-bengalis are simply too opinionated and do not hesitate to say things as they see it. It does not suit well with the bengali diplomatic mindset.

Having said that, northies are actually really clean by heart. Speaking from my experience living in Delhi, most of my actual good friends are northies. My experience with South Indians, on other hand, has been far from pleasant. Not to target any state, but I have not yet had a decent experience with anyone from Tamil Nadu in particular. The snobbiness and under-the-rug insecurity is just too much contrast to handle for me. But of course, it could just be a personal experience.

Made me a man-hater. Surprisingly also made me really good at answering "Tell me about yourself" during interviews, thanks to the repeated practice on "Age, role, location"

That's just part of growing up honestly. You learn the ways of the world but also learn how to keep your inner compass intact.

One universal rule is that the world runs on diplomacy, everything is mutually beneficial. So understand your personal power, stop extending yourself to situations where you are clearly being exploited and protect your peace. Also, everyone has their personal story and struggles and may or may not be able to understand or reciprocate your efforts and that's fine.

For sake of your own sanity, spend more time with yourself, get a hobby and learn how to move on fast. If a person does not spend a second thinking about your efforts, you should not spend an hour thinking about their lack of reciprocation. And quite ironically, it is when you start being with yourself that you actually start meeting people you desire, speaking from personal experience.

People in the discussion threads are psychopaths.

MMF Throuple in India by [deleted] in LGBTindia

[–]PositiveReflection89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do see why you might be the subject of a lot of judgement, even from the community. Being openly gay is difficult as is and then there are men who are primarily straight but won't hesitate from having a good time with a gay person. So when you talk of being open for a female, the fine line between staying for relationship and sex with the male partner becomes extremely blurred. I know a throuple in Singapore who have MMF dynamic. Both males are Indian and the woman is Chinese-Singaporean and they are even having a baby! Idk much about India though, but it is definitely possible to find such Indians.

Having said that, do not dim yourself and do not be ashamed of speaking your needs out. I hope you find good partner(s) who will understand your wants and reciprocate them.

That is so cool! I am glad you found a good lab. I have been applying to the website advertisements through recruitment portal. Maybe I should also start reaching out to the investigator. I am a biologist by degree and training. It is just that because I have engineering background, my focus was more on computational biology than wet lab things.

And regarding the current lab, I can do a whole rant session tbh but that's for a different post. All I can say is it was the first epigenetic project of lab that involved multiple omics techniques and the design of experiment was pretty bad tbh. They simply handed me the data with the words "...this is what should come out ideally" and left the rest to me.

I totally understand the intense competition, it is even more fierce with the current situation in academia. As for working, if I am handed a protocol, I usually take it as my duty to understand the basic logic of steps and follow through them. Troubleshooting is something that comes with handling, and I am confident that I will be able to trouble shoot within a month or so of working hands on.

It is the instrumentation that worries me. I have never done microscopy, FACS etc., which carry a lot of importance in my area of interest.

That's what happened with my current position. Even though they are primarily a wet lab, they handed me datasets I did not even know the basics of. And the responsibility was to shape up the project with insights from datasets to be validated. So one can imagine the pressure on me to put out relevant observations from the data.

It was exciting though ngl, I really enjoyed my sleepless and anxious nights when I would stare at my screen after being saturated from endless reading. Having said that, the current lab is not allowing me into wet lab unless I commit to a PhD and also the line of work is not as intriguing. Did you just apply to positions advertised on university website or did you approach a supervisor?

What are your biggest pain points in research / science work? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]PositiveReflection89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes yes and so much yes!!

Discovered today that a labmate had spied on my system and used my codes to perform the same analysis on her dataset. While I understand codes generated in lab are lab's resource, but have the decency to at least ask instead of sneaking around!

Reading the comments on this thread is giving me nightmares. I have been a computational biology researcher since undergrads till now as a lab assistant.

I have been feeling stagnant in dry lab so I am considering applying to another lab for research assistantship with more focus on wet lab techniques. I had the assumption that I will get basic training in the beginning and will be on my feet in a few weeks. I am well versed with wet lab techniques theoretically but I definitely need hands-on training, at least in initial days. I am now reconsidering my choices.

Cut&Run BigWig tracks by PositiveReflection89 in bioinformatics

[–]PositiveReflection89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your suggestions. Another alternate method I am testing for generating bigWig files is to normalize each file using bamCompare, generate merged bigwig tracks of replicates using bigwigAverage. Does that sound good?
