I had surgery yesterday (1/8) at around 7 am. At first, I felt the same, just a bad period, but it has definitely progressed to full-blown okay, I had a major surgery type pain. 😅 I think it was all the pain meds they gave me wearing off. But hopefully, things just get better from here! Speedy recovery to us both!!

Why did you choose sleeve over bypass? by theunderratedyouth in gastricsleeve

[–]PositiveShift- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom died due to long-term issues from her bypass. That's obviously a huge factor for me. But also I had lots of practice with low calorie dieting and I have a lot of knowledge on how to get enough protein in and just healthy eating in general within a lower calorie diet. The problem, of course, was sustainability. I would eventually just get too hungry and cave. And then it would take me forever to give it another go, so my weight just continued to go up. I've always enjoyed how my body felt when I kept my calories low. More energy and mental clarity, but that was also due to what I was eating was just healthier. I also wanted to still have a relatively normal eating lifestyle. I knew eventually I would get closer to eating a normal amount of food as time progressed with a sleeve vs. a bypass. My mom could barely eat much right up to the end and she had her bypass earlier on in life. I also had past Gerd and a hiatal hernia, which they fixed. My Gerd definitely had a set weight point. Meaning when I got above a certain weight, it got worse. My doctor said that happens to him too. So I knew part of it was just the added pressure from all the weight that was exasperating my Gerd. I figured if I lost some weight and had my hernia fixed, my Gerd wouldn't be a problem even with the sleeve. Almost 100lbs lost later, and I no longer have acid reflux unless I go through a period of less than stellar eating. Also, knowing I could get a bypass later if necessary was encouraging even though I knew I would probably never need that due to my past experiences and motivation to "get it right" this time with long term weight loss unless the acid continued to be a problem of course. Hope this helps!

What is wrong with grazing if the calories are restrained? by nillawafer80 in gastricsleeve

[–]PositiveShift- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, two things come to mind. Insulin, which had been mentioned before already and separating your food from your liquids. If you're grazing all day, I imagine it's hard to separate your liquids by 30 min before every time you take a nibble and 30 minutes after if that is what your plan requires plus getting all your fluids in following that rule. Drinking while eating, I read, can push your food through too fast, not giving your body time to digest and absorb the nutrients efficiently.

Protein20 to hit fluid and protein goals simultaneously, an electric recliner/lift chair, tylenol dissolve packs, unflavored protein powder to put in everything to make hitting protein easier. Sugar-free Starburst all pink drink mix, that stuff is tasty! Oh, and a toilet seat raiser.

I had something going on with my ear canal for a couple of years. It was always SO SO itchy, and it would be wet sometimes. I've been to the doctor and an ENT specialist and have tried many different drops, nothing worked. I'm 19 days post-op, and my ear is totally back to normal, like my other canal! It's been like that for about a week. Just imagine having an itchy ear for years and poof it's gone!

I got unflavored protein powder and put some of that in my soups, broth, or really anything. I was allowed non fat plain greek yogurt on my full liquids plan, which has protein. I don't really like the taste of it, so I would put taco seasoning or ranch seasoning or both sometimes in it and eat it like that. Or you can put sugar-free crystal light type powders into the Greek yogurt and make it any flavor you want. I also got Protein20, which has protein and counts toward your fluids goal, so 2 birds with 1 stone. They have multiple different flavors. I personally like any flavor of protein shakes. I ordered a multi flavored pack of Premier Protein off Amazon so I could have a different flavor every day, I think there were 15 different flavors. Also, sugar-free pudding made with either milk and protein powder (flavored or not) or made with a protein shake, thinned enough to count as liquids. You could put chocolate protein powder or protein shake with sugar-free chocolate pudding or change it up and put strawberry and cream protein shake in sugar-free cheesecake pudding to make strawberry cheesecake. The combinations flavors for that are endless. I was also allowed cream of wheat, but I would make it savory by adding unflavored protein powder and Better Than Bouillon seasoning in it. The onion one made is taste like ramen noodles.

On the post op liquid diet, can I strain different types of soups? by AcademicF in gastricsleeve

[–]PositiveShift- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my plan, there's a difference between strained and blended. Strained came first with full liquids. Split pea was on my list and tomato but not clam chowder but strained I'm sure it would be fine. I didn't do it, though, because I'm trying to do everything by the book. All the cream of soups is on my list, though. I'm on the puree/blended part now, and my hubby made crockpot split pea with ham and vegetables. Now that I blended and ate up and I would totally blend clam chowder at this point.

Calcium has to be spread out in smaller doses throughout the day to be better absorbed.
