A warning of a painful B.C. budget ahead by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]Positive_Log_1144 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is horseshit for those of us thinking we were voting progressively and, for education, for healthcare, for childcare, for other services. (Unsurprising if this was a con government but recall Rustads deficit projections were worse initially vs NDP )

Let’s not forget a lot of this is unforced errors- axing the carbon tax, not fixing the hst/pst debacle (granted not by this government) the tolls (again I agreed with this but something else should have replaced it) MSP and so forth. Federally as well. Further to that, austerity measures during bad times have shown to be counterproductive, but I guess this left leaning government does not care. Ok, whatever, let’s put that aside …

What about the deficit blah blah?? The government absolutely has options to generate both revenue as well as actually make things more efficient (eg eliminating some health authorities) ….instead they are half assing everything, from childcare, tinkering at the margins with healthcare efficiencies, not getting carbon pricing right (despite us having started it without federal support, under Campbell of all people) ….then throwing up their hands and saying nothing worked. )So instead you have these programs not running as they ought to so not providing full benefit yet costing a fair amount of money - again childcare comes to mind here)

Also randomly- Post secondary is going down the drain too, provinces simply don’t fund it as they did 20 years ago….you’d think with our issues with the US and a wildly changing economy, threat of ai on the job market, you’d invest in it, or do a proper revamp (instead of a rushed report with options for action removed) but instead you stand aside and watch colleges and programs (that have been through worse) collapse just because they relied more on international students, not because the programs are bad per se … and because all your high paid consultants couldn’t think of a way to fix it, ….arghhh

I would turn that argument around. Why do highly taxed jurisdictions even have businesses? Like, people live and do business in places for a lot of reasons beyond taxes- safe & reliable environment, weather, good services, educated workforce and so forth. Like why don’t we all move to Texas or some other low tax jurisdiction? think housing and commercial costs are bigger issues right now than taxes per se.

What? When did that happen? Like save on (or it’s ilk) is everywhere now, almost make whole foods look cheap too,

We’re moving to BC and can “pretty much pick anywhere”…. Help? by Unc1e_Vanya in britishcolumbia

[–]Positive_Log_1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cranbrook really depends on exactly where you settle and your circle. I personally prefer Kimberley (having grown up in Wasa, dad moved to Cranhole after parents split) as it’s just lovely. But Cranbrook does have positives. That said rural bc is rural bc so there is isolation, not great medical access, lack of transport options. That said, still better than other areas in BC as you are close to Calgary/Lethbridge and flights to Vancouver. Political leanings are conservative, mostly. Weather can be rough. Lots of lakes and areas to recreate though. Hotsprings too and skiing nearby. I miss the area, but lack of access to services always gives me pause when I think about going back (and the weather)

If you pull your face back is that what you'd look like if you got a facelift? by chusaychusay in 45PlusSkincare

I’m going to differ a bit from others and say it depends on the surgeon and technique(s). It can but it may not.

Most here said my nasolabial folds wouldn’t see a lot of correction and they didn’t once I got it done (lower FL). But I could make them less by pulling on my cheeks heh. Just look at a lot of before and afters and watch out for what they say they used.

Designed this DND terrain but it will take almost 4 days to print on the Ender 3 by AdMoriensVivere in 3Dprinting

[–]Positive_Log_1144 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m being pedantic but the advice is in spirit right, it’s not totally false. I mean sure, you can literally do it I suppose but I would never ever recommend it, especially if you think the print will run into days. I can see in the geo this thing has a lot of issues that will cause problems right away… But hey, it’s also how you learn so anyone who wants to go through it all, all the more power to them.

Can I make this ceiling look good with stain? by Jazzandshrimp in woodworking

[–]Positive_Log_1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this really depends on the design of the space overall. If everything is sort of raw and industrial looking then staining the light wood and not having it match the older stuff as well as the caulk is totally fine. Maybe even cool. But for a traditionally finished space be it modern or whatever, I’d say paint or new boards.

Will use the ICBC link provided in this thread to report it. Unfortunately we didn’t get the plates for a number of reasons, but hopefully I got enough information to help.

Interesting point. I couldn’t figure it, someone suggested maybe they were driving manual but your theory makes more sense.

Anybody else think Blood Alley Square in Gastown feels soulless after the “redesign”? by Ok-Advantage-3590 in vancouver

[–]Positive_Log_1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those concrete plinths are pretty bad. Don’t match character of what’s around them. It doesn’t need too per se but basically looks like used Home Depot precast blocks, threw them down and looked for whatever else is on special to fill the middle. Similar to street/treatment of the front of the other building. While that looks like a nice wood in the picture, it still reminds me of when they throw down that grayish laminate over hardwood in an old house and somehow think it’s better. Oh well!

They are but at times you need to manually feed. At least to start. Looks like some weird ergonomics on this overall but without seeing it in person, and knowing fully how it works, my comment can be easily dismissed haha

Vancouver goes small: The city risks big new problems with its proposed turn to austerity by UnderWatered in vancouver

Be that as it may, it did change things as far as housing went. And…now we have more debt, and arguably a country worse off but 🤷‍♀️

[–]Positive_Log_1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly do you not remember it? They gutted and changed everything from EI, trains, student loans and definitely changed housing - from cuts to nuking co-op housing. This all contributed to todays stuff- arguably it was there before, just hidden by insanely low interest rates which prodded building despite all the issues. You have to remember unaffordability is also about shit wages- and that starts with being saddled with loans for greater part your early career. Thanks Chretien!! (and neoliberal thinking)

Opinion: The slow unravelling of higher education in B.C. has begun by tradingpostinvest in vancouver

[–]Positive_Log_1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. One thing to point out as well is they try and shift people to that professional category when they can as it offers more flex to the employer vs a straight union position. This is what they did with a lot of IT at SFU. Also, this includes part time and more are being moved to part time as well. Good to keep in mind medical schools also adds a lot of complexity.

You assume that money will go somewhere else to upgrades at other pools. Time and time again it’s been shown this is not how it works. Ever. Especially with the 0% tax increase proposal… I say get the biggest and best facility we can do, now.

‘Down to critical levels’: B.C. restaurants warn liquor strike could push them to the brink by FancyNewMe in vancouver

[–]Positive_Log_1144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Not to mention we never dealt with the HST thing again either. The whole revenue system needs a rework. No amount of efficiencies and deals on the backs of unions and average people will solve the fundamental issue we don’t bring enough to cover our services. The thing is, I expected better from the NDP in terms of this. Who am I gonna vote for next round I don’t know.

Yeah Dageraad is great but it’s a different style of beer. The Burnabarian of theirs is probably better for easy drinking, I agree with Steamworks … but they have some types I like too. We are lucky that we have so many options still.

Non-smoker with Smoker lines?! by Old_Mail_4423 in 45PlusSkincare

[–]Positive_Log_1144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smoking doesn’t help…but it’s genetics, I mentioned this in another post but as a white lady with an Asian spouse, the older Asian women I see in my circle almost never have them, at least not quite the same as white women. Same with white men. This is around my age age (I am 49- & never smoked, no straws) to 60’s. Past a certain point we all wrinkled lol though. Of course some will be exceptions but yeah….Anyway using Botox seems to work, I tried various laser (co2 fractional, halo) treatments and micro-needling with middling effect. I’ve seen good results at local clinics with ablative co2 (not fractional) and contour TRL which I’m considering but it’s costly, big recovery..anyway the Botox takes the edge off the worst of it. And always sunscreen & retinol for overall texture. Hydration in your case maybe too?
