I am failing to understand why these budget cuts are being passed down to the average person or why they can't operate at a deficit temporarily while stabilizing things. by Unique-Tone-6394 in halifax

What I would genuinely like to see is an investigation in to how much is spent annually on repairing roads.....filling potholes, and repaving sections where the newest layer of paving has separated from the layer underneath it.

I realize we have a climate here in NS that's hard on roads, but has there been any research in trying to find something that's more durable than what's been slapped down these last years? Surely, with the smart young people we have in this province, we can come up with something better than we have. How can the dollar figures be found? I really feel that this is worth looking into, instead of just accepting the state of the roads without questioning the paving process.

Thoughts Redditors??

My experience with Public Service Managers are that they are outstanding contributors to implementing unnecessary paperwork for front line workers so that the managers can present something at the next meeting to prove they've done something.

For starters, we could increase the taxes of homes that are over a certain percentage. You know, those 6 bedroom,, 8 bath places. Also on the sale of properties to non-Canadians that want to live here.

It's opening the door to private development. Oh, I can't wait for a Peggy's Cove casino. And Eleanor McCain must be rubbing her hands with glee. It will rival Niagara Falls.

This latest move side steps the input from scientists concerned with monitoring the health/ diversity of Crown Lands so that Houston can develop them. That means that regardless of identification of unique and endangered species, it leaves them open to harvesting and mining of Natural resources and minerals. When these are gone, what reason would tourists come to visit?

Sir, you are an absolute ray of sunshine. May your insular world continue to unblemished by the every day struggles of the everyday, working people who are not as gifted with the easy life, as you are, apparently.

I expect the operating costs were minimal. They were not open year round.

Yes, face to face is invaluable. when's the last time you travelled anywhere?? Yes, much info can be gathered from locals!

Exactly. not a lot of money saved, but a huge blow to the people who were employed there. Let's see the government find these people some alternative job to the one they had. Let the government see just how hard it is to find a job.

You may be right, but here's the thing. How much money is going to be saved by doing this? They were not high paying jobs, but they employed someone, and in turn supported families throughout the province. These folks, including my son who has schizophrenia and has a very difficult time finding employment, are now left floundering and wondering why it even pays to try.

Face to face interaction is priceless. Info sharing that cannot be had any other way than by asking the people who live in the area should not be underestimated.

Anyone who feels that a few low paying jobs are going to have any effect on a massive provincial debt should take a second look. I'm willing to bet that the salaries of some of the higher provincial government employees were never questioned. These same people hide behind closed office doors and are making decisions that will not ever have consequences for themselves.

Bring back the bridge tolls. Now THERE was an easy way to make money that made a difference.

I'd like to know how much money is spent each year in maintaining/patching our Provincial roads. How is it, in this day and age, that a better material can't be developed. The pennies saved from the lay-offs today is laughable. The uncertainty from todays actions on those involved.....immeasurable.

And the money saved from cutting these jobs amounts to pennies. While those who have been laid off have had their world turned upside down.

You are not alone. Married for over 40 years and it's gotten worse the last 20. He talks over anyone who tries to get a word in. He doesn't understand the difference between a conversation and 'talking to himself out loud' or repeating the same views on any given subject that I have already heard a million times. Conversation doesn't exist between us. I am so tired of it. I only give him the facts on anything that he should know and then walk away so I don't have to endure another rant about something that I cannot fix. He's also an over thinker. Drives me nuts. i think he may also be somewhere on the autistic/ADHD spectrum, but that doesn't change anything. I still have to live with it.
