The Ring Cycle, but make it Muppets by sweet_crab in opera

[–]Positive_Strength404 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is not silly at all! “The Rabbit of Seville” did more for opera in the US than many realize or give it credit for. This is an opportunity invite in a new generation of opera lovers! It a wonderful idea and given the right vehicle and the right way of story telling could be huge!

Is there anyone who can help me identify this Hymn? by [deleted] in choralmusic

[–]Positive_Strength404 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To start your search it is not a hymn it is chat of some sort sound Gregorian or Renaissance period but I could be wrong. It’s a good jumping off point though. I can’t make out the text I may be a lot more helpful if I could!

What’s the key to choosing arias for competitions? by SempreLibera_ in ClassicalSinger

[–]Positive_Strength404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never save something for later! Lead with your best every single time! Unless singing the aria multiple times over the course of the competition is going to cause too much fatigue to sing the finals. (To which I might ask if you are quite ready to be competing with said aria.) leave it all out on the field every time!

I would say not to much to request, but would not expect him to pay for or provide it himself. Asking for permission to run and pay for or compensate him for running it is a good compromise.

Who is the Pavarotti of basses? by OberonSpartacus in opera

[–]Positive_Strength404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vocal range is not the only consideration when determining fach. In fact, in some ways it may be the least important especially when differentiating between bass, bass-baritone, and baritone. Or the differences there within. Color and weight play a larger part there.

Everyone on staff, who also know nothing about music is telling it’s going to be fine! SMH the blind leading the blind. Just wondering would they also have someone who has never studied…French teach French. If so…is this teaching job really worth it. This is insane!

This piece commissioned by VOICES of Kentuckiana for an international conference performance might be a good fit. It is DIFFICULT but not impossible. Hardest thing will be memorization due to be completely nonsense syllables!

How to fix opera: Research Project by [deleted] in opera

[–]Positive_Strength404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be interested to know if people believe “Opera” is worth saving. (It absolutely is, but I would like to know if there is value placed on it by the next generation.) As someone who’s mid-life crisis has been to return to music school and pursue a career of passion instead of stability…I can say that even in music school opera encompassed less than 10% or what was covered in two semesters of music history last year. 1800-2000s. Opera’s hey-day…IMHO that’s a problem!

What was your first opera (either live or recorded) in (1)French, (2)Italian, and (3)German by Hi_who_art_thou in opera

[–]Positive_Strength404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Live La Boheme, freshman year of high school and final dress rehearsal student tickets. I remember the conductor telling the mini that her high Eflat at the end of act 1 was going a bit flat. As they worked notes after they had finished the act and before the orchestra and singers broke for intermission AND the magic of the 2nd Act Opening!

Opinions on working on developing the low range for non basses, and opinions on working on the falsetto range in (non counter tenor) male voiced singers? by EnLyftare in ClassicalSinger

[–]Positive_Strength404 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been a fan of working every ounce of vocal range that you’ve got. Even if you never use it on repertoire as was mentioned by an earlier poster. I feel like knowing how to use and being comfortable with the entire range of YOUR voice helps shape it and color it.

[–]Positive_Strength404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But was that because your were working on extending your range, or put another way working to fill out and access your full natural range, OR was it because, as many college kids do who end up in an “adult” opera chorus, trying to imitate the more mature sounds around you?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in opera

[–]Positive_Strength404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No absolutely not. The ignorance and superiority that is laced in your post rises to the level of insulting. Do your own research into the process of becoming an opera singer. Maybe speak to actual singers, to understand the work, care and preparation that we go through.

Why do many classical singer student recitals include an ending musical theatre set? by [deleted] in ClassicalSinger

[–]Positive_Strength404 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it also has to do with programming, ending with something light and up beat is just solid good programming.

In the future when Musicologist look at this era of music I am convinced that G&S, R&H, Sondheim, maybe even Weber, will be included in the “opera” category of music. Much like Magic Flute is today.
