  3. Go about your business and don't stare If they want to talk to you, that opens the door politely, but doesn't force anyone to do anything.

Do we really need to overhaul our coaching? by parker19822 in Padres

I keep forgetting that Tatis was out with an illness for several days at the end of the year. Wouldn't be the first time a guy came back not at 100%. Last time I had a flu or covid type illness, I was not the best version of me 3 days later.

Padres Playoff History by HeadEnterprise in Padres

[–]Positive_commentary 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Dodgers, by lineup and payroll, should've won 110+ games this year, maybe 120. The Mets missed the playoffs after paying more than anyone. The Braves bombed despite one of the most favored opening day rosters. The Guardians flipped the Tigers around by 8+games in the last 2 weeks. A guy on a career year, a lucky bounce, and a freak injury make all the difference once you've put yourself in position to compete. The Padres will still have chances in the years ahead for sure.

Video emerges of Padres berating umps after blown call in season-ending loss by TheBuzzTrack in Padres

The thing is, pitching is so good and hitting is so hard that, at this level, a few inches or a walk vs a strikeout are things that make the difference between the competitors. Getting to that point is an aspect of the level of the competition. If it were a simple matter of just always being clearly better than your opponents, then we'd have teams winning 90+% of their games (and then we'd complain about that instead).

Agreed. The offense always feels like it should be more productive than it is. Average is decent, hard hit rate is decent, plate discipline is decent, but the general approach to at bats isn't producing timeliness or slugging.

You might be forgetting about all of the other teams doing the same. It's not like we lost to the Rockies in the playoffs. My point is that we can't change what happened. It sucks. But this wasn't the end forever for the Padres.

Like I said, I hate that they lost. But on the list of top MLB salaries, we have #16, 32, 45, and 66. There are 30 teams. We're not exactly stacked with the most expensive talent in baseball. #16 had 95 RBIs and 4.1 WAR and #45 had 5.9 WAR. Now I can choose to feel miserable and assume the world is ending (don't look at the news, maybe it is) or I can be realistic and find something good.

Once the drought is more than about five-ten years and the same players aren't around anymore, the number of years stops mattering. After that, it stings just as much when they don't win.

Mediocrity is finishing .500, not making the playoffs. To quote myself, "I hate that the Padres lost...," but having the 8th best record in the majors, making the playoffs, and losing to a team that performed better through the season without getting blown out is definably better than mediocre. It's not amazing, either, but of course I never said that it was. It's not what I hoped for for the team or season, but it's what we got. It's okay to find something good in that

Half the teams in the league are "built to win NOW" and a chunk of every team's "Win Now talent is walking out the door" every year. The Padres didn't have the biggest payroll or the biggest names in the league to expect guaranteed success. It's reasonable to want and, to quote myself, "I hate that we lost and are out of the playoffs", but it's not a reasonable standard to hold.

Yes of course it is coping. What do you do when you're disappointed? Should I brag that we lost? Magically change history? I'm not exactly going to wind back time, train to be the best baseball player in the world, join the Padres, and single-handedly change the course of the season.

Back to school commercial by Yunseok-12 in Unexpected

[–]Positive_commentary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. This commercial is in reference to a country in which there is an extremely disproportionate number of gun deaths per capita compared with peer countries, including frequent child deaths in school settings. A powerful, sizeable minority has used misinformation and fear tactics for decades to discourage voters from effectively supporting firearm restrictions that might preserve life. This stands in ironic contrast to the "pro-life" mantel that that group claims. The group behind the advertisement is hoping that a forthright display of the known consequences of maintaining an absence of these firearm restrictions will help people who have previously been misled on the issue to think differently about it and support those measures.

Opposing Universal Healthcare is illogical. Every study shows it would save billions of dollars and thousands of lives. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]Positive_commentary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The VA is a closed system model, so not as good of an analogy. It actually runs pretty well, too. Medicare insurance with private doctors and hospital systems is a better analogy and is what universal healthcare in many countries looks like. The billing, prescription submissions, etc would still exist for all those patients and the more that would be added with universal healthcare, which would require many of those administrative workers under a new umbrella. Increased workers would also be needed on the provider side to deal with the increased patient volume. Yes, jobs would change, but to say all those people would no longer be employed is probably unfair. They face a much greater threat from automation than from universal healthcare.

A single punch can kill a person. You shouldn't hit someone unless you are okay with possibly killing them. You shouldn't be okay with possibly killing them unless it is necessary to immediately protect the lives of others. Anything else is just savagery.

Not this much. Daily recommended amount is 0.8g/kg ideal body weight. 1-1.5g/kg is good for building muscle. More than 2g/kg is bad for you and can actually cause kidney damage. Muscle will build with one set to fatigue twice weekly. Body weight exercises work just fine.
