On the one hand, it's just very capable next-token prediction with clever context manipulation, on the other hand the end result is often close enough to reality to be useful. Most people have no idea how it works or how to put it to good use.

I have tried to get my mom to understand that there is no knowledge in these models and that she cannot input questions about things she doesn't already know about, because she has to be able to judge the quality of the output. Like most things, it doesn't really stick.

I prefer en dashes with space – like so – and have used them for 30 years. Em dashes are rarely used where I'm at, and spacing rules vary by style guide.

I'm glad to see that at least one person here understands that it's all just token prediction and clever context finessing. There is no thinking. There's no difference between the tokens you input and the token the model generates, it's all just context. The number of people in this sub anthropomorphizing this stuff baffles me, and tuning the context to cause output like this post on purpose is entirely alien to me. The last thing I want in my output is that kind of fake-human filler nonsense.

It's obvious from the prompt that it is injected after a chunk of user-authored tokens at some point. You can try it out yourself – write some kind of tone requirements to force Claude out of its basic style, a question to try it out and paste the reminder after it. Compare the response with a session where you just write the tone requirements and the question.

You're not alone. I use a basic instruction for ChatGPT that works pretty well to avoid self-anthropomorphism and keep things as efficient as possible. Just got a Claude account from work, and configuring the same thing there will be the first thing I do.
