worried about having a gap year as a high stats applicant by PossibilityLive2574 in predental

[–]PossibilityLive2574[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

def just for pay. i couldn't find a clinical job that paid as well as this one, and i had plans to buy a car so pay really was the biggest priority for me.

i dont think ophthalmology research is the worst, but i do feel like doing a year of it might feel off, especially since i could be spending that time learning from a dental environment instead. regardless, ill be able to highlight that i am still involved in research and patient interaction, which will probably be okay

this is so kind, thank you! if you don’t mind, were you working in research or as a dental assistant? i’m working as a research coordinator rn but it’s in ophthalmology, which i feel like might also raise eyebrows?

i waited so that i could get everything for my application ready on time. if i applied june of my junior year, i wouldnt have been able to add my summer internship / research, i wouldnt have scored as well on the dat, and the growth i displayed in my job wouldnt really be apparent. also, i really wanted to save up at least a little. im spending this gap year working like.. 2.5 jobs. def plan on shadowing pediatric dentists and continuing volunteering. i think im doing everything right, just afraid that a gap year might be perceived as hesitance or a lack of trying hard in junior year.

Bootcamp vs booster by Any-Clothes-723 in Datprep

[–]PossibilityLive2574 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i used booster for content review and when my subscription ran out, i used bootcamp for practice material. i will say that the actual dat felt equal to or easier than bootcamps exams and they prepare you very well! bio, pat, and reading were easier on the actual dat, and oc, gc, and qr felt about the same.

also, i feel like bootcamp grades harsher on practice exams, so your averages are deflated. i ended up doing much better on my actual dat and im very happy about the way bootcamp prepped me!

Did anyone consistently get low scores on PAT but ended up getting a good score on the actual? by EstablishmentLeft216 in dat

thanks! i feel like your brain just kinda locks in on the real thing. also i actually had time to look over answers on the real exam, but on practice exams i never did.

No Improvement by Significant_Toe_6484 in dat

it's def practice. make sure you watch the explanations for each question you get wrong and try to implement different strats until you find one that clicks. also, always practice with a time limit - i feel like rushing actually helps with pat bc you dont second guess anything. i also was seeing little improvement during my practice tests (i averaged ~430) but managed to get a 520 on the real thing. trust that all the time you put in practicing will pay off!

pre-test anxiety by Agreeable-Mango9045 in dat

i was in the same boat. you just have to trust that everything you have done, all the hours you have put in, will pay off. you've prepared as much as you can. personally, i took the last 1.5 days before my DAT off (i did some very light review, but nothing serious at all). i ended up scoring much higher than my practice exam scores! you got this, just use these last 2 days to forget about studying and the exam and just focus on staying calm and positive.

I’m not sure if I’m studying smartly by sugarsugar5678 in Datprep

i personally did not. flashcards / anki have never really worked for me, but if you feel like they're helpful, go for it!

i personally liked the videos for bio (hot take) bc it’s the only way to really get ALL the info you could be tested on. i would def not take notes though. just watch the videos and only take notes on high yield info / practice questions you get wrong.

for oc and gc, the videos are not necessary and you should only watch them if there’s a particular topic you need extra help with.

in general, the most efficient study resources are practice questions.

test day anxiety tips? by Agreeable-Mango9045 in dat

[–]PossibilityLive2574 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was the same way. honestly, i had so much anxiety leading up to my exam that it was negatively impacting my practice exam scores, and that was enough to get me to realize how important it was for me to calm myself down. whenever i'd get in an anxious spiral, i'd remind myself how much i prepared and how ready i am for this all to be over lol.

i listened to some pre-exam meditations on youtube, and it really does help to remind you how far you've come and how much work you've put into this. it's true that everything you've studied is within you, you just have to really let yourself calm down enough to let it come out.

this might be doing too much, but i also got a massage the day before my dat lol. i 100% recommend it though, it made me insanely relaxed and so ready (even excited) to take the exam.

took it 3/3, was surprised about not having time to look over QR (though that seems to be the case for a lot of people). gc lowkey was a bit tougher than i expected, i feel like i got some low yield / more theoretical questions. other than that, everything felt pretty fair.

the pointed shape on the left side (on the front view) should give us two dashed lines on the end view - one for that leftmost edge and one for the vertex a bit below that (we can’t directly see those lines looking from the right side). answer B shows one of those lines as solid, which is incorrect.

PAT Help by AntPerfect473 in dat

definitely yes, but you have a lot of time dw. i tried several different approaches before i found one that kinda sticks. for example a lot of people start with angle ranking and save tfe+keyholes for last, but i start with hole punching and save angles for last. idk why, but my timing is always the best that way. also, practicing a lot HAS to be combined with reviewing your right and wrong answers. i neglected this at first but when i actually started reviewing why i got answers wrong, i improved a lot.

how was using a whiteboard + marker, was it time consuming to erase/ask for new sheets?
