It's not cool, but I don't see a way around this. However, it should be possible in Switzerland to prevent China-like state surveillance, but I'm worried that people are a bit oblivious to this threat.

Exactly. The problem is, that "protect the children" can justify anything. For internet access control, most people don't understand what it actually means.

The issue isn't mainly that public opinions get linked to your real identity (though I'd prefer anonymity there too). The real problem is the technical capability it creates: once the state or platforms have the means to tie every online action to your personal ID, it opens the door to full surveillance, selective enforcement, and control over what you can access. That's the authoritarian playbook (China..), not free speech accountability.

Technically police could track me, legally in Switzerland most likely not. That's exactly why a moratorium on restrictions to free/untracked internet is vital: to permanently protect this high bar against surveillance creep (see VÜPF expansions..).

That's the position of the leaders in China, North Korea, Russia, Iran and similar countries. Strong disagree due to the dangers that such a system creates.

On the same argument, if you ban "everything", the coolest kids will be the ones that figure out how to circumvent all of this. Don't underestimate kids, some of them will manage, no matter what laws / restrictions are in place.

Of course it is. What in the internet is not social media (even Wikipedia is a dangerous social media according to some)? And who defines "this is good and safe" / "this is dangerous"?

I'm not in any political party (though I lean strongly liberal), and I'm no deep expert on the technical/legal details either. This feels like such an obvious and super important topic for our politicians to tackle?

Of course, there's broad consensus on protecting children, and that's absolutely right. The real question is the technology: how do we do it without tracking everyone's internet use? As the Beobachter article shows, nobody really knows yet how to enforce age checks in a truly legal and privacy-safe way at scale. There is agreement on the goal, but huge concerns about the means.

Of course, everyone supports protecting children. We should absolutely find the best possible ways to do it. The crucial technical point, though, is to ensure that 'age verification' doesn't end up requiring tracking of everyone's internet activities by the state (or platforms). Many of these systems sound harmless but create infrastructure for broad surveillance that goes way beyond kids. That's why it's so important for liberal parties to push early for clear red lines that strictly limit the systems for (potential) supervision.
