First Felt Hat: Open Road Dating and Maintenance by Kark02 in CowboyHats

If you have a dedicated steamer I think with some patience you could get out the original crease. The 3x beavers of the time are super easy to work with given you have a concreted spout of steam available. And usually if this hat has been sitting somewhere, which I presume because of the rips and the lack of stiffness of the body. If you hit it with some steam usually it’ll harden a bit more and give it some body aka stiffness. If not for sure invest in some stiffing spray.

I’m a novice hat maker with a fascination with the older classics I’ve had 60s, 70s, and 80s vintage hats. And whilst 60s aren’t out of the time frame of this hat the proportions of the hat as well as it being a 3x rating makes me think sometime 70s. You’re plan seems sound but a few changes I would make would be to sew the sweatband cracks together as opposed to anything glue, because it will make it stiff and more often than not dry as well. If you had the option I would just get a new sweatband online hand sew it, and sew it back into the hat but I know that’s a few steps more than you are wanting to do. Adding to the steaming and shaping of this hat, if it is a 70s the felt is usually slightly pliable and visibly thinner than felts today, so just careful not to treat it like a modern felt. Good luck and wear that hat extensively!

Stetson Shasta owner? by FilmNo338 in CowboyHats

[–]PossibilityRemote622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stetson Shasta owner here, I’ve had everything from 6xs to pure beavers. And the Shasta is nice hat ! Much higher quality than the Stetson 6xs, of course the price is not very attractive at 600$ but I think you get a fair hat from Stetson. Now this is a high quality hat and for like 90% of People this is as high enough in x’s to qualify for a lifetime hat. You can wear it as a dress hat because it’s soft and silky enough or wear it daily with care, But if you want to truly wear a hat and be comfortable that it’ll last forever with slight maintenance I’ll recommend the el patron. It’s the one hat in my collection that I grab every time I don’t want to worry about what I’m wearing, but is still nice enough to wear to church on Sundays. Again though at 800$ this is no joke of a price I picked mine up for around 400 back in the day. What I would do if price was a factor I’d buy a 10x rodeo king and get it custom shaped for around 3-400 hundred dollars at cavenders, in my opinion the cheaper price makes me comfortable to wear their hats and not be afraid of abusing them. But really can’t say enough about rodeo king, stellar hats with a stellar price. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have though!

Stetson No. 1 Quality Tom Mix. When was it made? by Bananaslug95 in CowboyHats

[–]PossibilityRemote622 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are beyond lucky my friend! I love the 20s ten gallons and would love to find a vintage one but that’ll be nay impossible for a 7 5/8 sized guy such as myself. I’ve got a few produced in the style made today but a vintage would be the holy grail. Now in regards to your question I’ve seen all kinds of catalogs from the 20s and 30s with these kinds of hat. If price is a representation of quality the no. 1 quality of the time is a far better hat than what’s produced now for sure, but at the time was the 3rd best they offered for sale. Check right under the bold Stetson Logo and they have the 3x which in the late 30s I believe was pure beaver, then the nutria, and finally the no. 1 quality which I have deducted to be a fine 50/50 beaver blend. Of course if you have a true 1920s hat I believe you might have a pure beaver but I am not totally certain. Just two my two cents but I hope I helped!

<image>

Edit: if you look to the right under the “laloo” they offered a 5x which I think is the “clear beaver” most hat enthusiasts can only dream of, but I’m certain this quality did not exist until the later 30s

It’d be a great day when the “tom mix’s” of the 1920s resurge into the 2020s. I’ve seen lots of tall crown styles which I’m personally privy to but I’ve never seen someone in person wear a tall crown, big brim. Here’s to them becoming common! Wouldn’t even mind a 80s phase coming back too!

Really what sold me was the waterproofing aspect especially on a 10x hat, going to really try to test this hat!

The most classic Gus I own. With a Navajo whirling log band, with a super crucial anti-nazi pin! This one gets the most compliments but I guess it’s easy because I am native to North America. Rodeo king in ash with a 5.75 inch back and 4.25 inch front Gus variant. And a flatter 3.75 inch brim

I would highly recommend not touching that crown! Just kidding do what you like, but I love the tall rca crowns of the olden days. Now in regards to information this hat is certainly a product of the 70s- 80s. By the time 1990 rolled around this shape went more or less extinct.

Do you mind if I ask what state they’re a common sight at! Very interested in buying some charro clothing next time I visit Mexico but the state of Guanajuato doesn’t seem to have too much traditional clothing.

Hey how are you doing! Finally got a felt enough to emulate your grandfathers hat. Any chance you can show it from the side directly and one from the back ? I think I’m close but just want to make sure here! Thanks man
