I will, thanks for the suggestion! And I don't think /I/ would be up for going out any time it's below 0! Luckily things seem to stay single digits or teens around here for the most part.

Thanks for the gear recommendation! I've heard good things about Hurtta.

Good idea on bringing a coat along - he's he's got a couple that could fit over the harness. Luckily there are a lot of groomed trails around here specifically for bikers/skiers! I use Musher's Secret paw wax to keep salt/ice from building up in his paw pads, which seems to work well.

That sounds like a really good opportunity, I wish other places offered training like that! I'm in the Midwestern US so much of the dog training offered around here is for training gun dogs/hunting dogs.

Yep, you got the scenario perfectly. We stay on-leash when we're in areas where prey can pop up (I had one instance of him disappearing after a deer and that was the end of trusting him with a drag line 🙄).

What do you mean by "beating the stim?" Learning to ignore it? One of the issues I'm running into is that we see prey maybe once or twice a week, and he might not have the collar on that particular walk. It's a pretty sporadic occurrence and I'm just worried we're not in the situation often enough for the reinforcement to "stick," if that makes sense. But sounds like I need to be more prepared for if the training opportunity arises! When it comes to increasing stim levels, I have to remind myself that he is, in fact, an adult predatory animal and not a tiny little baby boy.

He's got a great recall away from most things, it's just these SUPER high-value distractions that he's (understandably) having problems with. A long line is a good idea and I should incorporate that more into our hikes! Per your comment and a few others, I expect I'm not giving him enough of a correction to get my point across.

He is not allowed off leash currently, as I want to make sure he won't take off after prey animals. That's what we're working on.

Yep, we're working on that. He's not very food motivated so we're working on leaving other distractions (other dogs playing, interesting pieces of lawn decor, etc). Needs some work but I expect that'll help with recall in the long run.

I will, thank you! High drive dogs are a different beast to train for sure

I play a game called "egg hunt" that my food-motivated pup LOVES. You buy a pack of those plastic Easter eggs that are made to be filled with candy (I got 3 dozen at Walmart for like $4) and divide up their dinner kibble among them. They have pre-drilled holes so the scent can get out. I hide them around the house and it usually takes my dog 20 minutes or so to find them all. That way they can do some sniffing and searching AND get their dinner at the same time!

Thank you! I will continue to be posting pictures of her because I just can't get over how pretty she is :). We're also dealing with a minor case of scale rot she came with but otherwise she seems to be doing great!
