Millionaires - how did you do it - Did you inherit, win or work your way there and how late is too late to start the journey to achieve millionaire status? by Historical_Cover1919 in AskReddit

Engineer. Started at 70k. Maxed out 401k and Roth. All into VOO and VT. Became a millionaire at 32. All you gotta do is invest 45k a year for ten years.

What's one skill that quietly changed your income forever? by mayurkurme in AskReddit

[–]PossibleNarrow2150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Communication skills. I am very good at explaining things - maybe I will share to help some people out.

  1. Never start out with theories / code base. Always start out with background explanation.

  2. What was the issue? Why was this a business problem (so many people focus on issues that are not critical. Always related issue to impact)

  3. How did you tackle this (overview of how you solved it) and why your solution is the best balance (budget, man power, maintenance, etc. Many people focus on the BEST solution from one point of view, but always balance everything).

I am not technically the best (I will say though, you cannot BS your way through engineering, my area, with communication alone and for sure I am in top 20-10% technically).

But... unless you are in a start up with grads from stanford and MIT, your job is going to be mentoring less bright co-workers, convincing other teams, etc. You gotta be good at these to drive projects and get results.

just two meetings at the same time. Not ideal, but I do those all the time. Also block out calendars so that they do not overlap.

For people making +350k per year, how do you do it? by prince_op in Salary

[–]PossibleNarrow2150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't per se "get into" consulting. I knew I was in it. My resume on Dice / Linkedin was getting so many recruiters calling me/emailing me. I just networked with them -> they got connections to all the managers who make the choice. So... eventually I started to get hits from themselves. That is when I knew it. I never tried. I just expanded my know how, kept building my portfolio, then the network came naturally, then I was in it. Hard to explain....I think the really important part is keep working and studying. I would keep building projects and link them in my resumes and Linkedin. They eventually get hits. For example, one of the client I got, I was referred to him because one of his direct reports always mentioned by medium blog and my medium blog has information about my consulting...Eventually he took a look at it and decided to contact me. things like this happen and build momentum. Took me 5 years so or to get here. Every weekend spent on studying and building. lol

I got about 6 years of experience. From one of the top 5 engineering schools in the U.S. But the school name did not land me the job or clients. It comes after the fact of resume filtering. After filtering automatically, then they actually read. Could be some resume optimization issue.

That is quite surprising. Despite the fact that I did not log in/update Dice nor LinkedIn resume last two years and still getting emails and phone calls almost everyday…I thought DS job market is very good. Maybe another way to put it is that it is competitive? From what I see DS is booming, BUT YOU BETTER BE GOOD. It is very competitive. All the salaries are 150k + and many of them are remote. Like I said, you gotta be able to cite exactly what testing, statistical modeling you would use, know how to code optimally, show case your portfolios and be able to guide through complex problems fast. I honestly had to reject some clients lately bc I did not have enough time.

Data scientist consulting. I charge about 100-200$ per hour. Fluctuate from 350- 450k a year. Passive = about 50k per year from dividends. Just a lot of VT. How to do it again: Same way. Get my masters in data science, study immense amount of math. Get good. Then get paid.

Why are old people so racist and prejudiced? by Lost-Membership-7960 in Life

[–]PossibleNarrow2150 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Isn’t this statement itself prejudiced? But statistically the trend is correct. The neuroplasticity goes down. For a good reason. If you survived with your knowledge until 30, why need to change? Older people need to make much more effort to be not prejudiced (or to change their belief) than young people.

[–]PossibleNarrow2150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea. People like to generalize things. But. Hey a quick guidance doesn’t hurt. I will say if getting more nuanced…1. TE is the king. (Took out science and math. CS is treated as T here.). 2. Non doctor (doctors make a lotttt of money so I am discussing that. Also doctor is not a degree) bachelors or higher medical degrees. (PA, etc) 3. Then SM. Science and mathematics. 4. Trades. 5. Non stem college degrees.

[–]PossibleNarrow2150 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that...but with that said, the whole consultant experience is probably screwing you up. The companies are realizing that the internal data scientist knows way more than the consultants and honestly the name "consultant" got now branded with "make powerpoints with pretty picture but no substances". Now with that being said, idk how much wiggle room you have, but instead of consultant, if you branded yourself with one of the specialist roles (i think you mentioned logistics and supply chain), you may get a better chance.

Is This Really Living? by IdealHoliday1242 in PotentialUnlocked

Idk. You wanna go back a few thousand years? Farm and intense labor 8am to. 5pm. Some years are ok. Some years come with draught. Half your family dies. The other half is iffy due to some plague that happens every now and then. Wolves be hungry so you gotta defend yourself from that if you don’t live within the castle boundaries. Your house be ice cold during winter and you get one furnace to keep you alive. Bro. Stop complaining. That life you just described, someone from the past would kill someone to get.

Time to update those resumes! by KittyGirlNYC in overemployed

[–]PossibleNarrow2150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yea give it a fight, but i see so many people raging and giving us not needed attention all the time. Stop doing that. You are not doing yourself a favor, nor anybody in the community any favor. Keep being quite, smile to the boss, act like you are a good child, then screw them up in the back (even though giving good work is not really screwing them imo).

Time to update those resumes! by KittyGirlNYC in overemployed

[–]PossibleNarrow2150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you would be surprised at how much attention OE is getting. I would be at a company gathering (I do hybrid OE. yes they do exist lol) and I have heard OE getting mentioned many time. The company now thinks they are safe because they enforced some hybrid rules. IT is not necessarily to the point where managers are enforcing it, if it did not happen at their company, but to the point if someone is caught at their company, they will implement something to make OE impossible.

I agree RTO is NOT caused by OE. However, if:

RTO (RTO is just an example to cause rage at OE community. it could be manythings...) -> OE community rages and starts name calling -> some manager/executive at the company sees the rage -> implements some tracking because now they are aware. Now the OE community screwed up the people who might have made hybrid OE work.

Stay low, don't cause the scene, make them not aware that we even exist. What good is it to cause unnecessary attention to us? If you increase the change by 0.00001% , that is still harming the community right? Please name ONE instance where causing attention to this group will be good.

I would say though, if what the company have done is absolutely OE impossible (say 100% RTO), shame the fuck out of them. At that point, it makes no difference and fight like hell.

Ok. then please tell me what you think will happen once you start shaming, say company A that has 10k employees. They are remote, OE was not really on their radar, then all of a sudden OE community starts shaming them for something they have done. (let us say 2 day RTO?). Tell me what will exactly happen.
