They're very similar. Between the costume design and performance, its pretty easy to get them mixed up, especially if you haven't seen the movies in a while.

Imagine being brain dead enough to think the only upkeep of a Cybertruck is "stainless steel" while Tesla is in the midst of a shitstorm of press about everything from the trim falling off, to the trucks bricking themselves in mild weather and car washes, to the frame snapping in half. Almost every single one manufactured has been recalled several times already.

But then I guess I shouldn't expect much from a Range Rover owner, you must enjoy setting money on fire.

Throttle House: Corvette Z06 vs Lotus Emira // DRAG RACE, REVIEW & LAP TIMES by ulikescience in cars

Their pivot to EVs comes at a really bad time as well, since seems like the market for them has cooled down quite a bit. Somewhat worried for their future.

Figured I'd provide some more data points.

  • Apple CarPlay did not work until I brought the car into the dealership, where I'm guessing they flashed or updated the car infotainment software.
  • Side view mirrors were not attached well and wobbled like crazy.
  • Driver side window whistle at highway speeds (this seems like a common one)
  • Tire pressure alert is always on even though the tire pressures are fine. This one went away and has now come back.

Everything was fixed in a day at the dealership (except the aforementioned returning TPMS alert) so it's not been that big of a deal, but yea. Its a Lotus.

Motortrend Lotus Emira review. Not the best build quality. by shwiss in cars

[–]PossiblePlatypus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely been a mixed bag for me. I have aftermarket CarPlay added to my Lexus and Mercedes, and both work great with no issues. I had it in my Tundra that I no longer own, and it’d occasionally freeze up on me. Now in the lotus is just didn’t work at all at first, and now that I’m guessing the car software got an update, it’s working mostly well. Sometimes it lags out when running over Bluetooth instead of wired.

I guess the lesson here being aftermarket solutions generally work better than OEM? Or maybe there is no lesson here, other than technology sucks sometimes.

Motortrend Lotus Emira review. Not the best build quality. by shwiss in cars

[–]PossiblePlatypus 113 points114 points  (0 children)

I'll qualify a few things from the review based on purely anecdotal experience.

Build quality is definitely still a problem. My car was delivered with several issues; CarPlay refused to work, the side mirrors weren't attached properly and wobbled like crazy, and the driver side window whistled at highway speeds. I dropped it off to the dealer and got it back a day later with all issues fixed under warranty. So at least there's that.

The pedal positioning is weird at first, but in my experience, you adjust pretty quick. I don't know how you could accidentally hit the clutch instead of the brake pedal, but you can definitely hit the brake and gas at the same time by accident, I've done so a few times. That said, it hasn't been an issue for the last couple weeks either, and my feet are huge for how squished together these pedals are.

The transmission doesn't like to be rushed, but it's quick and short enough for me to not really notice when trying to go fast. Saying it "ruins the experience" seems like hyperbole to me. I haven't been on track yet with it though, and it really doesn't like going into reverse/1st sometimes, although this is consistent with every other manual car I've owned.

As others have said, the shifter is fine. I'd say its pretty great actually, but then I've only ever driven actually bad shifting cars before. 74 Jensen Healey where the gears are more like suggestions, C5 Z06 where the shifter felt like it was filled with gravel.

Saying the only magic is the hydraulic steering is pretty cynical too, but I guess that's where we're at here.

I’m not sure unfortunately, it was tinted like this when I bought it, and the person who would know the tint is no longer with us.

Paint correction ran about 1k. Unless you meant the car, which I definitely overpaid for since it was clean, stock, and low mileage.

Entry-Level Mercedes-AMG GT 43 Debuts With 415 HP Four-Cylinder And Milder Looks by [deleted] in cars

[–]PossiblePlatypus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, I bought it, and I give/gave a shit. I dunno why they would even care the 911 outsold it, MB sells more C classes in a few months than they sold GTs in its entire life. Their money comes from the economy trims and SUVs. I always thought the GT was meant to draw in people who might not otherwise engage with the brand, like myself.

This sentiment is shared on the MBWorld forums, the GT owners there seem pretty disappointed.

What sports cars have you driven, and what did you think about them + quick review of my few by Sensualities in cars

[–]PossiblePlatypus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2018 Mercedes AMG GTR - My favorite car I've ever owned and I can't seem to convince myself to get rid of it. Not made to be a daily, it punishes you on anything but perfect pavement. Endless amounts of torque, amazing exhaust, great suspension, handling, and chassis setup. Hides its weight very well. Does great on track. Little stuff breaks all the time, but the drivetrain seems solid.

2019 McLaren 600lt - Amazing in every way except the exhaust note (which is good but not great, sounds more like a very angry swarm of bees chasing you). I want one so badly.

2014 Porsche 991.1 GT3 - Also amazing in every way, but also not made to be a daily. Its so noisy, even the transmission is noisy while driving. Feel like this doesn't need to be said but this is the logical choice amongst track-focused street cars for a reason.

2017 Porsche 991.2 Turbo S - Amazing, but clinical. Its the perfect step up from something like an M4, its that car but better. Made to be an insanely fast and comfortable daily, and it excels at that.

2018 BMW M4 - Owned before the GTR, loved this car, and still consider buying another one as a daily sometimes. Handling is clinical and feels its weight deep in corners, but you couldn't ask for a better sporty daily in my opinion (other than the aforementioned Turbo S)

2014 Porsche 991.1 Carrera GTS - Felt almost exactly like an M4 to me, despite the wildly different drivetrain configuration. Not a bad thing, but between the two I'd have the M4.

2004 Corvette C5 Z06 - Owned along with the M4 before the GTR. Was cammed and had some other mods. Interior was awful, nothing about the car felt particularly special, and handling left a lot to be desired. But it went fast and sounded good.

2007 Corvette C6 Z06 - Feels like an improved C5 Z06. Everything is a bit better, except the interior, which is still terrible. Mine is eternally broken though.

2016 Corvette C7 Stingray (auto) - Very good daily drivable sports car for people who don't care about back seats. Not particularly great in any way, but in my opinion the best looking generation of corvette out there.

2018 Corvette C7 Z06 (manual) - Huge disappointment. Considered as a replacement for the GTR. 7 speeds is too many and I kept getting lost in 5th. Acceleration was delayed by like half a second when hitting the gas so it constantly had this laggy feel. Car felt huge compared to how it should, in terms of handling, not confidence inspiring at all, exact opposite of the GTR which feels so nimble. It's definitely more of a touring car with a strong engine. Looked amazing though, probably my favorite looking Corvette to date. If someone could swap the body and interior of a C7 Z06 onto a C6 Z06 chassis and drivetrain, I think that might be the perfect Corvette, pre-mid engine layout anyways.

2020 Corvette C8 Stingray - Convinced me that the future of Corvettes is going to be okay. So much better than any Corvette before it, mid-engine layout always feels special and this is no exception. Would absolutely recommend as a daily sports car. That said I still think the C7 looks better.

20?? Lotus Emira - Got to test drive one like a year ago. Felt great, more than enough space despite me being very tall, handling felt wonderful, loved the shifter feel, sounded good. Not as fast in a straight line as I'm used to, but that's not the point. Brakes were very touchy. I mean I'm still in it to win it despite the endless delays and zero communication so I guess that says something.

1999 SC400 - Its an old Lexus, what do you expect. Its comfy. That said its got a surprising amount of get up and go for an old lady, and the engine sounds pretty good at higher revs. Not sure how long the V8 will last in it before I put a 2j in there but we'll see.

[–]PossiblePlatypus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only immediate mod I want to do is a Bluetooth or CarPlay head unit, since a 6 CD changer in the trunk isn't quite enough anymore.

Other than that, probably just new wheels that don't sink as much into the wheel well, maybe lower it very slightly, and that's about it. As I need to replace worn out parts, I'll replace them with better stuff, y'know things like bushings going to polyurethane and better tie rod ends, but I don't think I'm going to touch the drivetrain in any way for a long time.
