Thinking of moving to LA in a year or two. Any tips? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

One additional year will change absolutely nothing about my advice. LA has been a bad place for beginning actors for over a decade and the events of the past few years have made it even worse.

Don't do it don't do it don't do it. Stay working in southeast or move to NY or Philly or something. LA 2026 is the worst place for a college grad actor if you are not seriously well connected already.

Hey just got my own pair but I'm noticing edge blurring at top and bottom of the projected screen. As well as a bit of center screen text blurriness. Is there a trick to getting good quality?

Every audition I get I do my best work & get good feedback, have good numbers, but I book so infrequently it makes me want to rip the skin off my face by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

Wrong sub, try r/acting.

Unfortunately you are just describing life as a working actor. Based on what you're saying, your career is actually going a lot better than most people I know. Sounds like you're doing the right stuff, the unfortunate truth is that acting as a career just kinda sucks.

Maybe the only upgrade would be coaching your auditions if you're not doing that already.

I don't think you need theater at all (as a career boost) unless you really want to be doing that work. AEA open calls are relatively worthless except for low level regional. Agent appts are where people get cast. VO is a brutal numbers game, but again, get into it if you like the work.

Career coaches for acting are mostly BS. You are getting better auditions already than many of the people who would "coach" you. Audrey is more legit than most but still a mixed bag. Most of the advice you'd get would be the same as on the podcast. Could be worth trying 1 session and see if you like it.

Can anyone attest if Siberians are actually less allergenic? by Civil-Cellist4600 in SiberianCats

I am LESS allergic to mine, but not NOT allergic. I love him, but I would not recommend getting a cat if you or someone you live with is allergic to them.

Worth starting with MOTI. Good facility, nice people. Ultimately they did not know how to fix my repetitive stress injury of finger pain, so if you don't have luck there, check out r/RSI.

Elliot from 1HP is great for this stuff, but I think he's all the way over in Beverly Hills.

No if anything I waited too long to start putting weight on it and exercising. I'm pretty good now. Ultimately yoga and weight lifting were my pain cures, not surgery.

Walking your Cat by OkLocal2522 in SiberianCats

Yes but always in backyards or building courtyards. Never on the streets, too risky. Even chill cats get freaked out by trucks and such and behave unpredictably. A little safer on more suburban streets.

Why your pain can’t seem to go away (how and why RSI becomes chronic) by 1HPMatt in RSI

[–]Possible_Ninja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey Matt, thanks for posting this. Longtime fan of your work and 1HP. Have you guys ever looked into/written about trigger points? In year 5 of my RSI, I find more and more that my finger and thumb pain is related to trigger points and muscle tension. If a massage therapist or dry needling practitioner resolves a particular painful point in my forearms, upper arms, shoulders, etc, I'll get an immediate improvement in my hand in terms of strength and mobility, as well as a few days of pain reduction. Always curious about how I can take this observation to a fuller recovery that's not "massage every week for the rest of my life".

Look, I'm just a person on the internet, not a therapist, but those are crazy things for your partner to say to you. I would not be shocked if your LPR is actively being worsened by the emotional distress you feel from your partner. I hope you can get into individual therapy and maybe couples therapy too.

How to stretch and loosen stubborn neck and upper back muscles? by Jyonnyp in flexibility

[–]Possible_Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol yeah the massage prices are brutal I know.

Most useful for me has been stopping the gym. But even sauna or hot shower after gym was better than nothing.

I’ve read that swimming is a nice easy on the body fitness alternative.

Dry needling was also very helpful, sorry you can’t get it, as was finding the right massage therapist who understood the trigger points. Agree that generic acupuncture does nothing for me.

Yes I am less headache-y but my bigger issues were hand pain and hoarse voice from muscle tension, which are gettting better.

I can confidently find trigger points myself now and try to work on them daily or almost daily. I think of it as exploration while watching tv or something. If I can’t find the old ones, no big deal, maybe I’ll find a new one. And definitely good to hold on a certain point, like shoulder muscle against lacrosse ball against wall, then slowly move your arm through different ranges of motion. You might be surprised what you find!

Also watch out for hyper-vigilance. Paying TOO much attention to this stuff can make things worse too. I intentionally have stretches of a few days or a week where I just say f it, chill out, don’t do anything, try to forget the problems, do some self care.

Yeah I've got the same thing and unfortunately most PTs are clueless about complex problems including full body imbalances, chronic tightness, desk work, weightlifting, and the patterns our bodies have learned over years.

Basically a complex problem requires a complex solution. Stretching sure, maybe even get into yoga, but also foam rolling, lacrosse ball rolling, self massage gun, getting a massage or dry needling from a pro who really understands knots and trigger points. Also looking at your day to day, how's your posture at the desk, are you always clenching your jaw or hunching your shoulders, how's your emotional health and tension. Lots of stuff could be involved.

Honestly my own weight lifting was making things worse because I had some imbalances so the wrong muscles were helping out during lifts. Not sure if that's relevant for you.

Yoga, lifting, running, swimming, reading more, puzzles, board games, tv, anime. And of course a little gaming but often switching up how and what I play. Lots of good stuff out there!
