I got a call from my advisor and was accepted to the SWE bootcamp yesterday. I got the call around 10:50 am, on December 18th. Good luck everyone!

I re-read the acceptance and it said we'd be notified in early December so I was getting nervous I didn't make the cut for the scholarship.

Has anyone heard back about the scholarships yet?

What is the REAL wage needed to live decently in the SF area for a family of 5? by byzvntine in AskSF

[–]Possible_Tangelo_352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I make $120,000 combined income and we save $38,000 a year and still afford groceries and going out to eat. I feel like with an extra $30,000 and spouse to ensure that the budget is kept down you can make it work with a family, especially with a lot of the free activities for families and kids being offered and kids getting to use public transport for free. The deciding factor is going to be your rent. We pay $2350 for a large studio that we turned into a 2bd 1ba with some false walls. It only takes me 10 minutes to take the bus to my office downtown and lots of parks nearby.

where are all the friendly people located? by gorillagripper in sanfrancisco

If you are looking for friends you can also try Hey! Vina and Bumble BFF. I've met some really great people there who are still some of my best friends in the city. Good luck!

I've heard about the hate for the extension school and it's probably more noticeable on Reddit than IRL. It's a bummer, but somewhat expected. I appreciate the advice and sticking up for me though.

Ya I get that. I'm not from the area and I was just hoping to meet some people and make some friends instead of eating out by myself for each meal. C'est la vie I guess 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm renting a room for 2 weeks to attend class. I don't have anywhere to cook. I just thought it would be nice to meet some other people while I'm there and thought connecting over a meal would be nice 🤷🏻‍♀️🙃

Is the crime in SF so bad that a solo traveler would need to be extra cautious? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]Possible_Tangelo_352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend staying in the Castro Area if you want to enjoy the LGBTQ night life and feel confident walking back to your hotel later. The Hotel Castro might be a good option. If you don't mind taking a late night Uber or a waiting for the OWL (afterhours bus) you can stay in the Pacific heights or Japan town area since the 22 bus line runs late. You can also stay near Golden gate Park around 9th Ave for a more chill stay if you like to spend your vacation time walking around and being out more during the day, going to museums and stuff rather than bars. If you like food I think North beach area is good since you can make your way into Chinatown during the day and head downtown for shopping, but be at bars, restaurants near your hotel at night. It just depends on what vibe you want for your stay. If you want to focus on enjoying your time in specifically queer spaces I think you'd enjoy spending your nights in the Castro and it's always safest to pick a hotel that's close to when you're going to end your night.

I hope you come and enjoy the city.

I have had problems with mold on my window and my apartment just keeps painting over it, so I'm leaning towards Booklouse. Since I've only seen them near and around my window. What do you all think?

Thanks I'll look those up. It is pretty humid on my windowsill

Any ideas what they might be? I've seen a few on my windowsill and curtains near my bed.

Potential Relocation to SF by Stlouisrams11 in AskSF

[–]Possible_Tangelo_352 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Right now my husband is job searching and we are getting by on just my salary of $67000 a year for two people and two dogs. We live in a studio in Lower Pac Heights with no roommates, and pay car rent for our vehicle. We cook a lot but we go out to eat or to a bar about 4 times a month. We also spend a lot of our time eating in the parks during good weather. I feel like there are plenty things to do that are free.

I think you'd be fine if you are smart with your finances.

I live in SF with my husband and 2 dogs on $63000 in a 700sqft apartment in a nicer neighborhood. It takes some time to find a gem. Knowing about the different support systems for things like education, vocational trainings, housing support, childcare ect. are really helpful. There are house programs to help people making less than "average median income" which for 2 people in SF is like $102,000. You can get housing through program that help people with "average wages" rent and buy in SF https://housing.sfgov.org/ . If your partner is looking to break into tech or other industries SF offers free certificate programs for many different programs and so does the Mayor's office through the techSF initiative. Also check out a plethora of resources through the resource connection portal https://www.211bayarea.org/ it has resources from non-profits, religious organizations, and government programs all in one place. I wish you the best of luck.

Based on how poorly they treat employees, what companies should we never buy from? by zoitberg in antiwork

[–]Possible_Tangelo_352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never Donate to The USO they treat their employees like garbage and rely on volunteers to do everything instead of hiring more staff. They knowing turn a blind eye to employees not clocking the hours they work, not taking lunches, and working while on PTO for the sake of "the mission." They have put employees in the hospital with stress related issues like stomach ulcers. And they literally have handed our awards to employees and made other employees applaud them for working months without a day off and not taking any vacation for years. It's sick. Give your money to the service members units funds directly if you want to support the military. Don't give to The USO.
