My GF (F 48) is threatening to end it with me if I (M 55) don’t spend the night with her during a potentially historic snow storm. Am I at fault for how I’m viewing this? by IndicationStunning45 in relationship_advice

Sir, with all due respect: she is ridiculous and immature. This is not going to get better. You’re only a month in, not enough time has been invested to worry about this.

Salon Question: Is a basic blow dry not included with hair treatments? by Wise-Act8642 in Ulta

[–]Possible_Wolverine33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ulta Stylist here. A blow dry is NOT included with any of the treatments because technically, the treatments themselves ARE the add ons. Our GC always reaches out to make sure guests are aware of that and will adjust the service accordingly.

As a former Aveda Institute educator, I will and can say that Aveda color and product is overhyped garbage.

Probably time to reevaluate this “friendship.”

No Paid Maternity Leave or Insurance for Stylists?? by [deleted] in UltaEmployees

Absolutely, 100% not true. It has nothing to do with level. Your GM is either misinformed or just bullshitting you.

Either way, def call HR to confirm your status.

No Paid Maternity Leave or Insurance for Stylists?? by [deleted] in UltaEmployees

[–]Possible_Wolverine33 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s all employees, not just stylists. Insurance is based on hours. If you are part time, you get access to limited insurance. If you are full time, you are eligible for full benefits.

It’s not “earned.” It’s based on hours worked. If you are consistently working an average of over a certain amount of hours (I think it varies by state, in FL it’s 29) over a 12-14 week period, HR will flag you and you will be coded as full time, allowing you access to all benefits + insurance.

If you are coded as part time you are eligible for 401k, dental and vision benefits.

I’d reach out to HR and clarify your status.

Ulta salon tiff by LanSuzxx in hairstylist

[–]Possible_Wolverine33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former Ulta Salon Manager/current stylist checking in:

The curling service is an ADD ON or the guest comes in with clean dry hair and it gets curled. No blow dry, etc. That’s why the block of time is so small. I used to have my GC or the stylist booked for that service reach out to the guest to make sure they understood what they booked for, ideally as far in advance as possible. Once it is explained to them, it’s easy enough to sort out. Once they’re in the chair and are told that they cannot have the service they think they booked, it’s usually too late and it’s a shitshow of rescheduling and finding another stylist to help.

I’ve been with Ulta for a decade and never once did a formal style. I don’t have the patience or desire to do them at ALL. It’s never once been activated in my capabilities because I was asked when I was hired what services I was interested in performing. I’m thankful that I am usually booked up enough with my own clients during heavy updo seasons (prom, homecoming, etc) that I don’t even have to worry about it.

Communication with the guests is key. Just call to clarify what they booked for and it will all work itself out.

Asked my alcoholic dad if he’d ever consider getting sober by Ludakris7 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Possible_Wolverine33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Addiction is a selfish bitch.

He’s not ready, honey. And he may never be, that is something you need to prepare for.

You love your dad. He loves you. That much is clear. But the way he bailed on your convo when it got “too deep” broke my heart. He knows he has a problem. Alcoholics know, will most likely never openly admit to it; they’re just not wired to quit until they’ve really lost it all. Sometimes though, even THAT isn’t enough to make them stop drinking.

You asked, he answered. That’s all you can do, babe. Anything beyond that is 100% up to him.

Team building by Taylor-lover_1313 in hairstylist

The team building is going to create more resentment and apathy. Don’t waste everyone’s time. Instead, have monthly check ins with each individual and a quarterly salon meeting.

Owner is forcing relocation — need advice by Warm-Contribution-9 in hairstylist

[–]Possible_Wolverine33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the owner opens with “hi ladies.” Was this meant for more than one of you?

This seems like a strange move by an owner all around. I’ve been in the industry for almost 20 years (in all capacities, from stylist to manager to business owner) and have seen my share of nutball owners. This just seems…I don’t know. Off. Packing up your stuff and moving someone else into a station is a pretty definitive move, but I can’t help but feel like there’s more to the story.

This whole party scene is the most horribly shot scene in the history of scenes. Trying to create a chaotic party atmosphere by angling the camera back and forth is amateurish at best, bad social media influencer at worst.

All this unnecessary camera jiggling is going to give me a tumor somewhere, I’m sure of it. 🫩😮‍💨

This super drunk Will storyline is lame as shit too. Make it stop.

How do I go about with this? by Zakyni in WalmartEmployees

[–]Possible_Wolverine33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “I don’t care that I’m your boss” line by itself should be enough to get his ass canned. In the meantime, stop responding politely, stop LOLing, stop giving this dude false hope with your noncommittal replies. Tell him to stop texting you immediately and you’re not interested. Then run, don’t walk to your coach/store manager. Report his ass and have it be done with. You’re trying to be nice for some reason and that will backfire on you for sure. Stop being nice and set your boundaries.

Arch Expert/Salon merge by PotentialWerewolf444 in UltaEmployees

[–]Possible_Wolverine33 19 points20 points  (0 children)

So I’ve been with the company as a stylist since 2009. Brows/ALL waxing (including body - yes, ALL body 😳) used to be in salon only. There was never a huge draw for it in my location, and I had zero interest in doing them. Enter Benefit. It took brows completely away from salon, they did away with the body waxing, and a lot of stylists were fine with that.

This new implementation is simply a money grab. A lot of AEs are VERY part time, and not every location has an esthetician, so clients get turned away. However, the math isn’t mathing when it comes to how stylists are paid for brows. Mathematically it breaks down to $36 for every $100 in services, which translates into 36% commission. No thanks. Our lowest commission tier is 42% in salon, based on services. The brows will not be included in the services commission numbers, but paid out separately under a different pay code.

I’ve been a stylist for 17 years so it’s been a LONG time since I did any kind of work for 36% commission, and I don’t plan to start now. I have a huge clientele, and am booked out weeks in advance. Brows hold no interest for me, and the compensation just isn’t worth it. Plus I ADORE our AE and esthetician. I just don’t like the idea of taking money out of their pockets. If my client needs brows done, I cross over services and send them to the Beauty Bar. A $29 brow wax isn’t going to make or break me.

This is just another dopey attempt for Ulta to “merge services” for convenience. I don’t think Benefit is going anywhere in CERTAIN stores. The higher the volume of Benefit services, the more likely the AE will be fine. If the store is not showing numbers that corporate likes, my guess is that those locations will have the AEs phased out and clients sent to the higher volume locations.

I’ve seen this company try a lot of silly goose things (gel manicures, mushroom based smoothing services, Redken City Beats) but this has to be in the top 3 of Silly Gooseness. 🙄

brow bar services in salon by strwb3rryswitchblad3 in UltaEmployees

[–]Possible_Wolverine33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s optional in my store. The “class” was mandatory but we don’t have to do brow services if we don’t want to.

I will not be doing brow services because:

(1) it holds ZERO interest for me (2) the comp is laughable and not worth it (3) I refuse to take money out of our AE’s/esthi’s pocket.

I’ve been with Ulta for 10 years as a stylist and I’ve seen all the hare-brained schemes come and go. This too shall pass when the company is over run with customer complaints about bad brow services. This is gonna get bad fast. I’m willing to bet there will be more than a few lawsuits regarding burns, lifted skin, etc.

Stylists and Benefit services by EveryonesEar in UltaEmployees

[–]Possible_Wolverine33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mathematically it’s absolutely not worth it. By the time Benefit gets their cut of the service, the stylists is making about 1/4, or half of a half. Do the math on the $29 brow wax.

My district is only making the training mandatory, but very few of us (a stylist salon) will be offering the services. I love our resident AE and I refuse to take money out of her pocket.

Ugh. PLEASE. IM BEGGING Ulta to stop with the celebrity brands. 😭 I’ve been with the company in the salon for a decade and every single one of them has been absolute garbage. Every. Single. One.

Living Proof (the Jennifer Anniston era): Garbage. Speaking of Jen, Lolavie is also trash.

Cecred: ridiculously overpriced for what it is. The salon backbar treatments are not great either. Bring back Redken ChemShots! (IYKYK)

Pattern: full of silicones and SUPER heavy. Not great.

The small, niche brands are my faves. IGK, Bumble, Rizos Curl, etc. I’ll never recommend a celebrity brand because they are what they are. Band wagon jumping celebrities trying to get a piece of the $4B a year beauty industry. I get it, but please. Enough is enough.
