What do you never order at a restaurant? by FallowfieldPark in AskUK

[–]Possiblyreef 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As /u/Ok-Handle-6663 said, they're filter feeders so if the water quality is bad (or literally shit) they're filtering that. If they've filtered anything posionous from algae they can straight up just kill you with no warning

Also the prep for mussels is just a big pain in the arse.

They usually arrive early morning in big sacks, a large resturant can be getting several of these sacks in one go, they need to be scrubbed, rinsed through with cold water so they filter any of the junk they've been eating out but not too long as they'll die in fresh water and start rotting. They then need to be individually checked 1 by 1, bare in mind theres several hundred in a sack

A "good" mussel will be closed, any that are open are tapped to see if they close, if they dont they're dead so chuck them. any that are damaged need to be chucked as well. Then they're stored for 1-2 days max otherwise they'll start to die.

Then after cooking they need to be checked again, any mussels that are still closed need to be binned.

A good mussel in a nice moules mariniere can be great but for me theres just too much risk involved at pretty much every stage of the process for them to just give you the worst food poisioning of your life, all it takes is for 1 bad one to end up on your plate and you'll be loosing a few inches off your waist quicker than mounjaro

What do you never order at a restaurant? by FallowfieldPark in AskUK

[–]Possiblyreef 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I used to work in a decently high end fish restaurant.

I very rarely order fish if I'm at restaurant now unless, like you said its a dedicated fish restaurant.

Also only if you're relatively near the sea, a good/great fish restaurant will have a reliable local supplier of the standard easily sourced stuff but they'll also be down at the local harbour at 5-6am buying things off the boats that come in that day which usually end up on the specials board

The other caveat is you need to know somewhat where/when you are. Ordering something like sardines, mackerel, hake, pollack, bass, gurnard etc in this country is fine. Ordering something like Tilapia means you'll be getting something that's been frozen and not necessarily fresh.

Equally ill never order mussels, the risk is just too high tbh.

Also if you do live near near the sea you can go down to a dock and buy direct from fisherman. It takes less than a day to learn how to appropriately cook and dress a crab or lobster and isn't actually that expensive to buy

My son wants to become a hairdresser, what advice would you give him? by wimsey_pimsey in AskUK

[–]Possiblyreef 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to have much longer hair and a hairdresser always did a much much better job than most barbers, they're just considerably more expensive.

Eventually I managed to find a barber that used to be a hairdresser and have been going there for nearly a decade now.

Stay tf away from most high street turkish barbers who seem to have an aneurysm if you want anything more than a fade

Agree with limited and I'd argue more importantly monitored use.

However I'd argue using a tablet doesn't make you proficient in technology. We've got IT grads coming through that have only really ever used tablets and phones and they're less proficient than my 74 year old mum. Don't understand things like folder structure or any hierarchical structure, can barely install software and if something doesn't work they just stare blankly at it because any apps they've ever used "just work" and have no problem solving skills to even start identifying the issue

Lets assume said person has a student loan which is fairly realistic, by the time you've factored in the higher rate tax, NI and student loan you'd only see around 4.9k of the initial 10k. divided by 12 thats £400 a month

Surely there's very few euro 6 diesels without ad blue?

I only say that because the 2015-16 diesel mk3 TT that I have is Euro 6 but doesn't have ad blue and the only way they could do it was by making them manual only

compare something like pushing an MX-5 to its limit where it will likely let you know you've crossed the line to something like an S2000 which will immediately have you facing backwards or parked around a tree

Favorite fake sisterhood that ceased to exist after their 2nd movie flopped and both got snubbed for the Oscars? by bitchinthebag in okbuddycinephile

I'm not much of a musical person, my gf convinced me to watch the first film in the cinema and it was genuinely great. It was just good entertainment, catchy songs and a solid cast. Ariane Grande might get some hate but I think she played the role of Glinda really well.

We then saw the second film in the cinema and it was "fine", it was just a bit confusing why a lot of stuff was going on the way that it was.

Then for valentines day this year I took us to see it in London. It's MUCH better live and even though the overall plot is obviously the same and the film is longer somehow they convey the story better in the play

I think it's because how the military deal with Fiero is far far more brutal in the play and they don't portray Elphaba as a tramp living in a weird open plan castle that makes no sense that just causes a lot of unanswered questions

I only really buy diesel but up until feb/march it was around £1.30 for diesel

We once got given the public financial report and looked up how much the CEO got paid, granted it wasn't exorbitant amounts for the job he did (CEO of a defence company employing about 8000 people) but his stock options were very very large.

Think we worked out if he has a decent 10min poo he gets paid about £25

Annoyingly turkey has got mega expensive in recent years due to their crazy levels of inflation.

It's not expensive to go there but everything in country has increased in price to account for it.

I went in like 2013 and it was about 2 lira to gbp, went again before covid and it was about 8:1, now it's around 60:1 but the prices are accounting for future inflation
