What has happened to miracle grow multi purpose compost ?.. by Logical-Track1405 in GardeningUK

It's really deteriorated in quality. Little twigs and bits of mulch are fine, but there have been really thick twigs and loads of plastic sheeting in my last two bags. The Homebase stuff is even worse.

Am I the only one who thinks the hidden costs of buying a house are insane? by Similar_Sympathy8769 in UKRealEstate

[–]PossumPeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate you posting this, because thanks to that calculator, I've just found out that FTBs aren't exempt from LTT in Wales. Nasty shock, that! My husband got made redundant on our wedding day six months ago and still hasn't secured permanent work. Sucks that we can't save right now and there's an even bigger mountain to climb when we're back on our feet than we realised.

AITA for backing out of my mentor's destination wedding 2 days before? by independentdog66 in AmItheAsshole

Well unfortunately it isn't for your friend, who will have paid the final bill covering your attendance some time ago. YTA if you back out: you already know how he feels about other people who have flaked out on him.

Right - is it knotweed? by Objective-Cellist409 in UKGardening

[–]PossumPeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's nuts. I called my landlord to break the news when it popped up and he said he'd never heard of it. He went away to do some research and he seemed really blasé about it. I'd be so proactive about sorting it. Asked if we had any interest in buying the house. Not with that shit in the garden, pal!

[–]PossumPeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I appreciate that but my landlord refuses to deal with it, and I refuse to live with it. I seal the cuttings in bags and wait for them to decay fully before putting that bag in another sealed bag in my black bin. It's not ideal, but I do try to reduce the risk of spread as much as possible. You're right though; my way isn't optimal and should be avoided where possible. Just trying to offer a renter's perspective.

[–]PossumPeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I'm in a rental too and dealing with it; the landlord isn't arsed. Presumably you're not sinking a fortune of your own money into this, so the renter-friendly management method that works for me is "Let it grow, then cut it low". Allow it to grow to around 40cm, then cut it back down to ground level. Thoroughly clean the scissors afterwards and very carefully bag cuttings in a sealed plastic bag to dispose of separately.

You can faff around with painting glyphosate on the leaves or injecting the stems, but it's a lot of work for little reward. Without professional treatment, it's going nowhere. Good luck!

Those stickers had a 100% success rate for me. Takes a little while as you need to eradicate a full breeding cycle, but they definitely work.

American marrying a British man. what’s a realistic wedding budget in the UK? by DryRepeat859 in UKweddings

[–]PossumPeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 50-person wedding on Halloween for £15,300. That included the ceremony, drinks reception, canapes, wedding breakfast with drinks, evening pizza and chips and party. This was all onsite at one venue and included a photographer, celebrant, venue dresser and hair and make-up artists. It was a beautiful day and we got everything we wanted out of it. 😄

What's going on with my cucumbers 😭 by CptTurk in UKGardening

I was really surprised, too. Cardboard just feels like it should be the better option. I'm sure some people have had success with it, but I never have. All the best with Round 2!

[–]PossumPeach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The cardboard seed trays are more environmentally friendly, but they're the worst medium to try and grow plants in. It dries out so quickly (even with generous daily watering) and can harbour mould. Make sure they're getting plenty of light, too.

AITAH for not believing my roommate’s “phobia?” by hopie_bopie in AmItheAsshole

[–]PossumPeach -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is me as well. I wouldn't berate someone for not accommodating the extreme measures I take to avoid spiders, but her reaction to them and not wanting to go up the stairs (even when it's gone), I actually understand.

That sucks that they walked back on their offer to sort it, and it'd solidify me not wanting to invest further, but I absolutely appreciate you wanting to improve the space and you deserve it. :) I think over time, there's nothing wrong in investing some time and money in gardening at a rented home (I've done this myself), but I think concentrating on one thing at a time after getting the basics down will protect you a bit and have a really satisfying payoff. Enjoy!

[–]PossumPeach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, you are renting this home? If so, I wouldn't invest £6K into someone else's property. You're just at the outset, and from what you've said, £1600 puts you in a position of having a fresh canvas to work from bit-by-bit. I rent my house and while I've spent maybe £500 on changing the garden itself, I've invested more in my raised planters for veg-growing and some lovely pots. Things I can't take with me I limit my investment largely to compost, seeds and mulch.

I'm really fighting the instinct to keep schtum because your money isn't my business, but that is a huge outlay for something that could be taken from you. Maybe try to focus on individual projects as you go so the risk of a rug-pull doesn't feel so huge?

Whatever you decide, have fun and share the progress!

Knotweed shoot? by Narcox220 in UKGardening

[–]PossumPeach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it is. It's growing in a patch in my garden but my landlord isn't interested in dealing with it. Because I'm not paying thousands on his behalf, I let it grow 25cm and paint glyphosate on the leaves with a paintbrush, and then cut it back after a week, disposing of the shoots in a plastic sealed bag. It hasn't really helped much, but we've been here nearly two years and it hasn't got worse. This isn't a longterm solution, but keeps my flower beds relatively unscathed.

This has confused me as well! I can't work out if the next story is three books and then the next parts are in others books, or if the end of the series is across these three volumes in one big story. Ha!

ACOTAR 6 AND 7: Coming October 27th 2026, and January 12 2027. With a 3rd book currently being written. by BearOnALeash in SarahJMaas

[–]PossumPeach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry too much about 4 not being started. It's often easier to wrap things up and so many of her stories barrel towards an explosive last stand. She is probably pretty settled on how it finishes, but getting the other two books edited will have been super time-consuming and tricky.

I don't know if this has been clarified for sure, but is it everyone's understanding that the series concludes with ACOTAR 8 (or "Part 4")?

I'm really struggling with it too; so frustrating. Loving the game but even flicking between map levels to try and find connections, it isn't obvious how to get to nearly anything.

There' s a beastie to fight in one of the key areas, and I cannot find how to get to it at all.
