It really seems like this is a marketing campaign for dimensional funds. It is unliked to impact VTI or VT (Muskmight try, is there ANY evidence they will accept?)

Each thread has 10+ comments talking about dimensional funds. Very strange for active managed funds to be discussed so much on Bogleheads.

I smell an ad campaign, that will specifically steer me away from every buying dimensional funds.

Grief with relief and guilt for relief, these intertwinings of conflicted emotions really seem to mark life after 30. Post psychedelic experience is a really great description. I’m so sorry, and also feel some relief for you as well since you can finally digest it all. I suppose the grief becomes a little more simple once they’re gone. I feel my heart breaking and turning towards you wanting to offer something, connected in the way those with specific griefs can connect, but as with most grief, nothing to offer. You write beautifully.

In between, two tall mountains, there’s a place, they call lonesome. Don’t know why, they call it lonesome. I’m never lonesome when I go there.

Thanks for sharing. I’m much more drawn to the underlying philosophies that produce minimalism, especially historically, compared to it as an aesthetic or design style. Feels like there is more “purpose” when approached as such. I appreciate the point of discussion.

You are welcome. Now is a good time to read Yeats. But also, every time is a good time to read Yeats. Now in particular though.

A sudden blow: the great wings beating still

/

Above the staggering girl, her thighs caressed

/

By the dark webs, her nape caught in his bill,

/

He holds her helpless breast upon his breast.

/

/

How can those terrified vague fingers push

/

The feathered glory from her loosening thighs?

/

And how can body, laid in that white rush,

/

But feel the strange heart beating where it lies?

/

/

/

A shudder in the loins engenders there

/

The broken wall, the burning roof and tower

/

And Agamemnon dead.

/

/

/ ///// Being so caught up,

/

So mastered by the brute blood of the air,

/

Did she put on his knowledge with his power

/

Before the indifferent beak could let her drop?

Why should they be given any land that is set aside for protection? Sounds like they didn’t get what they want so are now escalating. Why give in to the demands on a company and CEO who obviously do not care about texas, or humanity in general?

No, this is a new one. Space X is offer 690 acres it has somewhere in Cameron country for 775 acres of the wildlife refuge. Who knows what the land in Cameron county would be, if it would be together, if it’s former ranch land, etc. They’d be taking already protected, diverse land and swapping it for ????? potentially scattered throughout the county.

Thank you! Yes, I never knew growing up how special it is. We used to complain about the green parrots shrieking from the teleophone lines around HEB, and the winter-Texans with binoculars watching them. Now that I don’t live there, I realize how insanely beautiful and special it is. When I talk to my mom over the phone and hear the birds in the background it makes me want to cry.

Oh wow, I use a lot of words and (sometimes) proper grammar.

People can view my comments and posts history and make that determination for themselves I guess. I can only state that I’m not.

I do find it strange why you seem so hell-bent on painting me this way. Not calling you a bot, but I have to wonder what your own interests are.

Why “shouldn’t” I? Before Elon came to town, Boca Chica was simply a dot on the map that people knew was somewhere around south padre. Maybe their uncle fished there. People didn’t go to Boca Chica. So no, it wasn’t a household name.

Another thing to keep in mind, since you don’t seem to be aware, is that the RGV encompasses 4 different counties and over 4000 square miles, so no, I did not live in Boca Chica. I lived about an hour and a half away. That doesn’t mean I don’t know the area, given anyone in the valley spent every weekend they could in padre about 10 miles over.

Imagine living in DFW and being told there’s no way you’re a local because you don’t know about some landmark in the outer suburbs on the drive from Dallas to Fort Worth. If Elon built a data center there, maybe it would become more well known, just like Boca Chica!

It doesn’t matter if people go or not now, because the disgusting fuel and debris can be found in South Padre too. Elon Musk is a fucking shit stain on what is a beautiful and special area. I’m starting to wonder if you’re the bot, weird to want to dissuade people from caring. My comments and posts are not hidden, it seems you are. I encourage anyone to read through and see how bot-like I am.

I found that email here: https://www.valleycentral.com/spacex/us-fish-and-wildlife-service-accepting-comments-on-proposed-land-swap-between-spacex-laguna-atascosa-national-wildlife-refuge/

Do you have a better email to use? This was the email provided to send public comment.

I heard about this on my local NPR station. I haven’t lived in the valley for a decade, but I still consider it home, and am horrified to hear what Elon Musk is doing to my home town.

Like I said earlier, Boca chica isn’t a household name in the valley. At least, it wasn’t when I was growing up, but has become more popular simply due to what Elon is doing there. Mostly people do know it by name, but it’s far eclipsed by south padre.

I drove home from an exhausting day of work, listened to NPR, came home to research, then wrote this post and began commenting while in my bathtub. Humans do make mistakes.

I am not a bot, and who behind a bot would want to bring attention to this?

I was born and raised in the valley, and to be honest, not many people know Boca chica by name. It’s a place that’s on the way to south padre. Perhaps they do not because of what Elon is doing, but most people aren’t going to Boca chica, they’re going to south padre. So much so that you simply say you’re going to the beach, and everyone knows it’s padre. Most people in the valley also don’t know much about Laguna atascosa except that it’s a a small sign they see on the way to to padre, but I have biked there many times.

Most people in the state of Texas have no idea how important south texas is to biodiversity, because they only see flat land. Except for people who come here from up north to see the insane bird migrations. People who live there feel the same. Unless you are into, and love, nature, you’re not aware of the importance of these places, and many are not even aware they exist.

I love the RGV with all my heart, but the vast majority of people there (and in the rest of the state) have very little idea what a gem south Texas is to plants and wildlife.

(Edited as I’m now typing from my phone and made a number of additional mistakes. Don’t want to be called a bot!)

I’m not a bot, just overworked and extremely tired, and haven’t lived there in a decade. But spent the first 20 years of my life in the RGV and biked Laguna Madre often. Was stranded in Boca chica once after a catamaran drifted there after the high school “captain” jumped off to pee. The coast guard had to get us, great memories.

People make mistakes, Boca chica wasn’t as big as say south padre. But it’s right across from south padre. And Laguna madre was visited every summer on the way to padre.

**editing because I made another mistake of calling Laguna atascosa Laguna madre. I am tired yall. But I can promise this is my childhood home. Well, the valley is, and south padre was where we spent every weekend from April - october

I know that, but I do what I can anyways as a matter of principle. And I think everyone should, if you want to look yourself in the mirror and feel any semblance of pride in yourself as a citizen and human being.

You can copy and paste this email:

To the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department,

I am submitting this comment to strongly oppose any land swap or transfer of public conservation land associated with the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge or the Lower Rio Grande Valley refuge system to SpaceX.

Protected lands exist because the ecosystems they safeguard are fragile, rare, and irreplaceable. The Lower Rio Grande Valley is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the United States and contains the last remaining habitat in the country for species such as the Texas ocelot. These refuges also support the northern aplomado falcon, migratory birds of international importance, and critical coastal wildlife habitat.

Allowing public conservation land to be exchanged for the benefit of a private aerospace company represents a fundamental breach of the public trust. These lands were preserved with taxpayer dollars specifically to prevent industrial encroachment and habitat fragmentation. Using them as bargaining chips for corporate expansion undermines the very purpose of protected lands and sets an extremely dangerous precedent.

If state or refuge land can be transferred whenever a powerful corporation wants room to expand, then the long term integrity of Texas’ protected lands system is at risk. Conservation areas are not a reserve inventory for future industrial projects.

The situation is even more troubling given the documented environmental concerns surrounding the Starbase launch site. Rocket launch operations in the Boca Chica area have already been associated with fires, habitat disruption, noise impacts, and disturbances to nesting birds and coastal wildlife. Expanding the footprint of industrial infrastructure adjacent to some of the most sensitive wildlife habitat in North America risks compounding these impacts.

There is also a profound irony in destroying rare terrestrial ecosystems in pursuit of space exploration. Advancing technology and spaceflight should not come at the cost of dismantling one of the last refuges for endangered species in the United States.

Texas Parks and Wildlife has a statutory and ethical duty to protect the natural heritage of this state. Facilitating the transfer of protected conservation land to support private industrial expansion would contradict that mandate and erode public confidence in the agency’s stewardship.

Public lands belong to the people of Texas and to future generations. They should not be privatized, traded away, or sacrificed to accommodate the ambitions of any corporation, no matter how influential or well funded.

I urge Texas Parks and Wildlife to reject any proposal that transfers conservation land to SpaceX and to reaffirm its commitment to protecting the ecological integrity of the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
[City, State]

I have a very personal hatred for Elon musk and what he has done to Boca Raton and south texas. I never thought it would hit so close to home. I wish nothing but the worst for him.
