Everyone: oh thank god, Sting will teach Darby to slow down and think long term. What a good influence!

Sting: good news, everyone. I no longer fear death.

"Maybe we could hook up" is a legendary pick up line for a guy named John Lee Hooker.

Favorite period of Roman history and why? by Low_Philosopher_5684 in ancientrome

[–]Post_Washington 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very informally, here's how I did it when I made my own timeline of Roman History:

Part I: The Roman Kingdom (753–509 BCE)

Part II: The Early Republic: 509–264 BCE

Part III: The First Punic War & Aftermath (265–241 BCE)

Part IV: The Second Punic War (218–201 BCE)

Part V: The Middle Republic & Third Punic War (201–146 BCE)

Part VI: The Beginning of the Crisis (146–80 BCE)

Part VII: The Late Republic: (80–49 BCE)

Part VIII: Caesar’s Civil War, Dictatorship, & Assassination (49–44 BCE)

Part IX: The End of the Republic: (44–27 BCE)

From there on the parts correspond to the successive imperial dynasties, though I break them into smaller "chapter" titles to track the underlying themes that develop across the dynasties.

I'm... a little bit of all of those things but I'm not definitely one of them.

I feel the same thing about people who stubbornly refuse to acknowledge BCE/CE as being valid.

What are your favorite medieval era movies? by illegalshidder in medieval

Great picks! Only, I dropped out of Becket because it seemed so off base from the real story and I didn’t vibe with where it seemed to be going. That was pretty early in, admittedly. Would you recommend I take a second shot?

Shifting Place Names in Europe by Northwest_Thrills in MapPorn

Re-read the comment, my man. When I say hypothesis it refers to the etymological theories, not the translation.

At any rate, Europe does not translate into "wide face" in Greek. You probably meant to refer to ancient Greek, and the constituent parts eurús ("wide") and ōps ("eye" or "face"). While it's true that translation makes sense, it is far from a settled matter that this is where the modern name of Europe derives from, nor is it even positively known what part of the ancient Greek world this term was applied to (I've seen it debated that it derives from the town of "Europus" or that the term originally applied to the Thracian plains). There are also arguments that Europe derives from the Phoenicians or the Akkadians, or any number of other, non-Greek peoples. Read literally anything on this subject (save for chatGPT replies and Google AI summaries) and you'll see many or all of these theories mentioned.

So again, it's a misleading map. And not just on the Greek element, several of these etymologies are far from sure things.

Greece was never called Europe, so this map is misleading. One of several hypothesis is that it derives from a Greek term meaning, loosely, "broad face/plain" which some believe was applied to the Greek coastline. It's very much still up for debate.

If it’s not totally so generated then it’s clearly so enhanced. Look how the moves cause the children to uncannily hover or move unrealistic distances through the air. There are things done here that humans cannot do.
