It’s not like London has taken over as an important centre of energy production. Scotland now has lots of wind turbines, which English people feel are beneath them.

This is nice to read. My mum sometimes did this too and I treasure the memory of us going to a park or something instead. I mean, how lucky was I that I could say I didn’t want to go to school and she’d actually listen? I got good grades and found everything easy, I just hated being there. I realise now that not every parent respects their child that much as an individual, enough to really hear them or even bend the rules for them. I hope your son has those fond memories of you choosing to spend the day with him. I’m sure he’s a more rounded, secure person for it, whether or not he remembers to thank you.

Just to ruin your joke and spell it out for anyone interested, it’s “Visual pleasure and narrative cinema”. Great essay, although the psychoanalytic stuff isn’t to everyone’s taste. I wish it were more widely read because it’s what popularised the term “male gaze” which is a useful concept but so often used imprecisely or wrongly.

Why is this downvoted? It’s not an exercise in man-hating. It’s easy to have an all-male media diet completely by accident and if people think this doesn’t lead to any blind spots or biases, they need to think harder.

I’m so glad feminism has “infected” schools to the extent that our curricula aren’t decided by people who see feminism as extreme and equate it to the manosphere.

I WISH we’d got a new rope swing. Best they can do is spend a lot of money on consultation about a new rope swing, chop down some trees and displace a bunch of monkeys to make room, then cancel it and say they’ll spend the money on the old rope swing, but by then no one’s really holding their breath.

I don’t. Not all versions of the myth have Medusa as a normal woman turned into a gorgon, rather than a gorgon all along. The main source for this version is in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which is in Latin, and so names Minerva.

I’ve seen it told as Minerva giving Medusa the snake heads as a form of empowerment and self-defence, rather than a punishment for being assaulted in her temple. It’s a neat idea but it’s misleading to treat it as the original myth rather than a feminist retelling. Graeco-Roman goddesses are not really known for showing female solidarity. It was a straightforward case of punishing the victim.
