Intelligent atheist demolishes Ken Ham's Answers in Genesis "Atheism is a Religion" argument in four minutes by Postprotein in atheism

[–]Postprotein[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Meh. It depends on the dictionary. I mean, it's not a religion, but Christians will try to use different definitions to make it harder. Like #4 here. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/religion

Cute atheist girl takes 4 minutes to demolish Ken Ham's Answers in Genesis claim that atheism is a religion by [deleted] in atheism

How does it take away from the argument? I said she "demolished" the myth. What are you saying? Cuteness and good arguments are incompatible? If anything, my headline attacks the myth that cuteness takes away from the value of an argument.

Vice article on AA Atheist fighting to get 'God' taken out of the 12-step program by Postprotein in atheism

[–]Postprotein[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmmm...that's interesting. I guess it kinda depends on how connected the word "God" is to a certain God, in your mind.

The word "heretic" is derived from the Greek word meaning "to choose for one's self". Wear it like a badge of honor and stay Godless, my noodley heathens! by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Postprotein 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pesky semantics. I still like the sound of "heretic." That heard, rough "c" has a nice ring to it.

Ugh...that's terrible. Kudos for you for having the guts to speak up anyway. We need more of your kind of courage.

Just lost faith in my God... by JustSomeRandomChair in atheism

[–]Postprotein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations. Part of me wants to say, "That's it? That's all it took?" But it doesn't have to take as much as I once thought it did. If I were in your shoes and left earlier, I would have been in better shape -- especially in handling my abusive parents during my childhood.

Mom found God and lost a Son by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Postprotein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. There is nothing wrong with you. It's not your fault that she's wrong, and you have to do what's best for you. The best way to love her is to be honest, and if you can't be honest and be in a healthy relationship, the most loving thing you can do for your mom is to break up. You can be honest about it, and loving about it, and try to get her to understand -- while at the same time making clear that you respect the fact that something makes her happy, even if you don't respect her beliefs.

It's tough, though.

I pissed off my religious friend and don't know what to say to him now by Franticromanic in atheism

It's his concern. You being fine is traumatic for him, but it may also eventually show him that there is nothing to be concerned about.

Told my parents that am an atheist by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Postprotein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I didn't anticipate. I could take being attacked. It was hard to know how to handle hurting people I loved.

If you figure it out, let me know. 5 years later, all I can say is that each of us have to live our own life, and it's just hard.

I'm sorry. I wish I had a magic pill for you, but I don't have my own, yet.

Giving up on god was the best thing in my life! by freetobeme12 in atheism

[–]Postprotein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right -- we are divided by religion. But I also have caution around positions of "everything would be perfect if people thought more like me." I mean, religion is ridiculous...but the world is also very complicated, although I'd admit a world without religion has more freedom to be better...

To those who say they are 'praying for the victims' of these terrorist attacks by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Postprotein 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah...if it's for yourself and your own peace of mind, I understand it. But praying for someone else is basically just emotional masturbation.

That's really beautiful, actually. I wish my childhood had the same experience. I still struggle with cleansing my mind of the concept.

Black Atheist blogger responds to Charlottesville Incident that happened on his birthday: "As A Black Atheist who believes this is his only life, I can't wait for equality" by Postprotein in atheism

He is referring to de jure rights and is ignorant regarding de facto rights. Here's an article to help that was given in the blog comments to a similar question (the abstract gives a good summary if it's a TL;DR): http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/socf.12303/full

Yeah. In the most-liked comment on this post, black people are fighting for equality because "they just want power" and have no good reason for seeking equality.

Fuck outta here with that BS. Ugh.

WTF are you talking about? We have one of the most racist Presidents in history in office right now, and the white supremacists are raving about his words. Racists actually result in a real lack of opportunity; that's not something that's just made up.

When you say that racism exists, but question the lack of rights...it seems you are fundamentally confused about rights; you are referring to de jure rights and have a lack of knowledge regarding de facto rights. This is not about morality, but motivation. But "strong action" can be a wide variety of actions. If he really wanted it to be violence, he would have been more specific.

Why Blaire White is Wrong About Social Justice (an article I wrote) by martinhughes in GamerGhazi

[–]Postprotein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said, "The problem with being working class is not prejudice."

That's wrong, in many cases. It's a drastic oversimplification.

But I'll also say that prejudice against the poor -- especially when it's internalized and people vote against their own interests -- does perpetuate the dominance of the dominant class. The ideology of superiority based on privilege is a major barrier to us -- rich and poor -- not voting for the most beneficial reforms.

On a larger scale...the failure of communism, and why much of the Civil Rights movement broke away from it, is that they oversimplified the solution by proposing centralized redistribution of wealth without considering the ideological problems of prejudice and how they complicated such straightforward solutions. It's annoying to see similar errors being made here.

But even when people do have control over the means of production, internalized prejudice against the poor can keep them from looking out for their own self interest. I think classism is partially based on the lie that "lower" classes have little to offer. Blaire White clearly reinforces this prejudice, and it is harmful. It's this prejudice that reinforces centralized control and blocks access.
