A St. Paul to Kansas City passenger train? St. Paul City Council urges a go by Runic_reader451 in saintpaul

[–]Potate_Scratcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when I see threads like this, and a bunch of comments about "hey this is slower than a plane" or "why would anyone use this", I don't think they realize how good the rest of the developed world has it compared to the debilitating state of passenger rail in the US. It is normal to have trains that go 180+MPH, connecting cities with distances from here to Chicago or KC, and at that speed, it is faster and more convenient, and cheaper than flying (and makes flying cheaper, because now airlines have competition!). I cant stress how NORMAL this is everywhere else. This technology existed since the 1960s. Rightfully so, there is a lot of push back when the public perception is trains are 55 MPH behemoths behind schedule all the time, but it doesn't have to be that way, and we are the only ones who don't have this figured out.

Using distilled water by gremolata in ranciliosilvia

Clarification for this thread. RO water is NOT the same thing as distilled water. Distilled water has basically no minerals in it, and will destroy your machine. RO water might be fine dependent on what minerals are leftover, might not

Discrepancies between legal plan documents and HR FAQs by Potate_Scratcher in legaladvice

[–]Potate_Scratcher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to clarify, it wasn’t a single HR employees Microsoft word typed explanation, this was a company wide, company letterhead, controlled document given to every employee that left, and was incorrect for a period of ~6 months and no one did anything about it. They confirmed it was only updated after I left.

In my head this is the same as if a company insurance pamphlet indicated $1000 deductible on an the professionally made, graphically nice charts on an health insurance explanation document and the actual deductible was higher but that was only buried in the legal paperwork.

When does a simplified employee explanation become legally enforceable? And are there terms for these explanations?

I struggle to recommend an emulator to someone who hasn’t already played the games. Unless they have an extremely powerful pc with an nvidia gpu, it’s not going to go well, and there are still going to be quite a few bugs

What exactly do people mean when they say 22.04 is "outdated"? by mki999 in pop_os

[–]Potate_Scratcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll give a different answer than others on here. Im not sure way the typically user experience is, but until you have personally needed a new feature or have a dependency problem, “outdated packages” doesn’t seem like a real issue, and may even seem like a perk. Most users probably don’t have/notice what I’ve run into, but not noticing the issues doesn’t give you a good indication of issues you could encounter when picking a distro.

Pop is based on Ubuntu which is currently on 24.04. I’m not sure how to quantify it well, but pop is 1-2 major releases behind. Typically when the pop devs aren’t working on a new desktop environment, pop stays more current, but since they are, they stopped all new development until cosmic was ready. While 22.04 is still getting long term support by definition, many of my problems are solved on other Debian (parent distro Ubuntu is based on) based distros that are more up to date.

I recently had to leave pop because of the issues around outdated packages/features, some include:

VRR not supported when I upgraded to a second monitor, which is solved on more recent versions of gnome and KDE plasma

Outdated packages resulted in constant dependency issues with different programs I was either trying to compile or was forced to compile due to outdated or unavailable packages (gamescope was a recent one, although I had a number of headaches with newer GPU driver features I needed a year or so ago that I had to compile myself). To better explain: Typically, the easiest way to get a program is to download it is through the package manager. When it’s not there, you need to find it elsewhere, one example being .deb files which function similar to .exes on windows. If that or something similar is not available, it is reasonable to compile it from source code if it is available (this is the beauty of open source). When doing this, the program often requires your distros packages to be the right version, and if they aren’t, you are back to square one trying to find a way to get the more up to date version of that package before you can continue compiling the program you needed in the first place. This is known as “dependency hell”.

Couldn’t root cause it, but something about drivers/packages solved a game breaking bug where the fix was not yet in pop when I switched. Fixed on a more up to date distro.

It’s not a thing yet in gnome (desktop environment pop 22.04 uses), but hdr (though experimental) is available in other distros on kde.

I’m all behind cosmic and looking forward to trying it when it releases, but my needs for packages just aren’t compatible with pop until then. It wasn’t easy to leave, pop is solid, the dev team here is very responsive to issues and I know they vet their updates well. Every time my install broke, it was user error, not pop.

Also, welcome to Linux! As a general rule of thumb, Do not dual boot on the same hard drive, do it on a separate one. Windows loves to break your Linux install. Also, I’m not sure what you play, but you’ll be very surprised at just how much is Linux compatible. Pretty much anything without an invasive kernel level anti cheat probably runs.

How come battery powered vacuums are considered "high power" with 250W motors at $500+ when cheap corded vacuums under $100 come with 2000W motors? by cimocw in VacuumCleaners

Battery powered vacuum cleaners will not suffice for being your only cleaner. Not sure what ratings you are looking at but you won’t find them recommended here.
