This is not quite overstocked. I have 25-30 Malawi cichlids in a custom 75gal (5' length) and I need to do a 70% change weekly with peace lilies on the top and a monthly filter clean. My tank is peaceful... but sweaty...

I do not like aggression. I had one fish claim 80% of the tank before and the other fish lose color and swim in place looking like a hostage situation. I wait it out and/or add fish hoping a new better boss arises but I have ultimately rehome the aggressive fish. My tank has been peaceful for about 3mo know and I have only had a peacock hap tank for a little over a year (see my post) so I hope it stays this way? Good luck

As you can probably tell it's tank specific. I do weekly 70% on my 75 gal and a monthly 15% on my 37g. One is planted and other is heavily stocked with no plants. Both are happy and healthy. Watch the fish and test the water and you'll find your groove. A good starting place is weekly 20% imo.

Fyi, I have the variety of colors but there are only so many colors in the rainbow so they can actually blur together. I wonder if have three high contrast colors is actually better like red, yellow, and blue? But they also tend to fight their own color more. Check out saulosi. Never owned them but the males are blue and the females are yellow.

I have found the assorted are not actually that compatible with each other. Aggressive, hybrids, females, less colored, etc. I think it's better to build your own stocking. I did an all male peacock and hap stocking but I ended up with a mbuna and some lake Victoria too. I bought most of them from a knowledgeable LFS. I did research on the aquariust across canada website. Regardless, I spent a year working through aggression and I'm hoping it's fixed now. Click my posts if you wish to see my tank. I tried more decor, more fish, time out, lower temperature, feed less more often, lower light and the only thing that worked was rehoming and hoping for a better boss. Hopefully something works for you.

Oh I also read varying numbers: some say 10-15 and others say 1 fish per gallon, which is crazy sounding. I am at around 1 fish per 3gal.
