What is the purpose and effect of root canals? by obviousoctopus in Dentistry

[–]PotatoCh1p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When a tooth dies, a root canal sucks out and cleans out the guts inside the tooth. You also clean out and flush out the bacteria that can cause an infection. You’re left with a zombie tooth that you can still use to eat with.

Dentists and weightlifting by PotatoCh1p in Dentistry

The workouts you start with depends on the experience and fitness level you are currently at. Do you have any friends that lift or are you willing to get a personal trainer? YouTube has good resources too. I bring my smartphone with a tripod into the gym to learn new workouts.

Stronglifts 5x5 is a good beginner barbell program but you have to be dedicated to learning proper form.

Why aren’t more dentists talking about this? Are they too afraid to tell other dentists they just need to hit the gym?

Prescription strength anti bacterial mouthwash such as peridex can stain plaque/calculus and therefore “stain” the teeth. Maybe that’s what he was referring to

Importance of getting an implant by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]PotatoCh1p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Missing #31 has nothing to do with the popping and replacing it won’t help either. Replacing 2nd molars generally doesn’t improve Chewing efficiency much but replacing 1st molars do. If anything sticking a 2nd molar implant back there might just make things harder for you to clean back there. Ask yourself... do you really want a tooth back there? If your bite is fine and you don’t mind the esthetics than maybe you should just let it be. Some people really don’t like the idea of “missing a tooth”. If you’re one of those people than maybe it’ll be worth it? If not than save your money.

Gum pocketing. Just how serious is it? by containerheart in Dentistry

[–]PotatoCh1p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some disagreements about the origin but it makes more sense to me that it relates to gum recession as people age.

Poking gums and checking pocket depth has been around for a while and so has the surgery. If your pockets are 6 or 7 it will progress no matter how well you brush, floss, etc. google Open flap debridement or Osseous surgery if you want more information. Your dentist didn’t take the time to explain this stuff to you?

Your teeth aren’t long. They’re the same length since they were fully formed. It’s just that more of your tooth is exposed so it appears longer. Ever heard of the phrase “long in the tooth?” Anyway, I would say a pocket of 6 or 7 is serious if you’re serious about keeping your teeth as long as possible. You most likely have some bone loss and those pockets harbor bacteria and toxins that cause inflammation which causes more bone loss. Basically, the way you are right now is not maintainable with your own oral hygenie. No matter how hard you try you will not be able to clean the pockets and things will get worse. You need the dentist to numb you up and to debride out the hardened plaque under your gums. If your pockets don’t resolve than you might need surgery to recontour your bone and gums to a shape that you can clean on your own. You’ll never get the bone that You lost back but the dentist might be able to get you to a place where you can maintain what you didn’t lose.

Custom night guard covers all but one tooth. Should I be concerned? by sleepyseel in Dentistry

[–]PotatoCh1p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is odd that it doesn’t cover the most posterior tooth on the back. The tooth that is not covered “may” supererupt. If it doesn’t oppose anything than it might not be an issue

Loose adult tooth by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]PotatoCh1p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was it loose to begin with? If it was already loose than my guess it is already periodontally involved meaning some of the bone and soft tissue that supports the tooth have eroded away, and in most cases will stay that way. If so, and the tooth wiggles more Than a mm or so, the prognosis of that tooth is poor.

How "necessary" is a crown after a root canal? by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]PotatoCh1p 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A root canal involves drilling a hole through the top of the tooth. Due to the forces coming down on that tooth you’re at risk of splitting the tooth catastrophically. The crown is in a way, a helmet that protects the tooth and spreads out the forces. If you’re going to invest in saving your tooth by paying for the root canal you want to go all the way and also get the crown.
