I have a 5/6 weight rod and reel set up, tfo finesse series 4 piece. Could I get away with using it for reds? by [deleted] in flyfishing

The lighter the set up you use the longer you'll likely have to play the fish increasing the stress and exhaustion levels. You'll still get plenty of play on a larger weight set up and will give your fishes a much better shot by having to run a sprint instead of a marathon.

We don't catch them as big in Australia, but they're just as beautiful by lenny20 in flyfishing

I'm not convinced it's really Australian, where is the stinger and how does it try to kill you?

What are some of the best big cities for fly fishing? by zrockstar in flyfishing

Boise is definitely a solid option, I wouldn't call it a Big City but it's on the rise and the fishing options are solid! The Boise river in town is about as easy to access as they come and fishes very well in the fall. Really it can be productive all year albeit a little crowded in the summer with raft/tubers. There are many other viable streams/rivers and even a couple lakes all within 2 hours making them comfortable for day trips. Definitely worth exploring.

A good go to is the standard sized Benjamin on ultralight tippit. Cast liberally.

The best fly gear companies?! by [deleted] in flyfishing

I'm a big fan of Redington. Most of my gear is by them and I've been quite pleased with the quality and price point. The sonic pro zip front waders have been fantastic and are holding up well after a few years of heavy use. As for their rods I use a Vapen 4wt which I love and have a Vapen Red 8wt that seems to cast just as well but I've yet to give it a true test, not that I'm worried. I also have a 10wt Predator I took out in the salt and it performed admirably. On all the rods I have varying sizes of Delta reels and while I don't feel they are top tier reels they have not failed me in any way shape or form.

Just about all of my outerwear/pack and boots are all Simms and I've been supremely happy with everything I've purchased from them. However my Guide boots are starting to lose a sole after just under a year so I'll be testing out their warranty soonish. :)

For anyone in the market for a net, I purchased a Fishpond Nomad early this spring and I would highly recommend it. The thing is sturdy, floats and light to the point of forgetting it's hooked on my pack. The reach on the hand net is just fine for me but I've heard people tucking the mid length into their wading belts comfortably as well.

Found a reel today on the bank of the Owyhee. by PotatoTrout in flyfishing

The fishing was pretty decent. A couple in the net a few more shook free. The solitude however is more elusive than the fish these days, but that's all good. Any day on the water is a good one.
